GDay,

Just thought id ask all you gurus if a 600x300x105mm intercooler is a waste of time on an R33 GTR engine with forged internals, GT35 700hp turbo and upgraded everything else. Ive currently got a Hybrid 600x300x76mm cooler and i suspect this wont be enough to cope with about 320 - 350rwkw.

Ive got the opportunity to buy one for about $400 new so im just seeing what you guys think. Also, GCG in Sydney offer the 100mm intercoolers for $900 core only. Is this a bit steep? Any ideas where to get one for less than GCG's price?

Thanks,

Shaun.

it all comes down to the fundamentals of the design etc of the core as to wether an intercooler will work or not.

in saying that , it is a common misconception that bigger is better.

more often than not a greater thickness of the core is required when the face (surface area of the core) is small.

i am of the opinion that hybrid coolers suck , though im sure many upon many guys have them on cars producing 350 at the treads, which is their choice i geuss.

remember that just because a cooler "flows" 500cfm , doesnt mean it will work , the way a cooler should. i mean a peice of down pipe from ur gutter flows 500cfm but does it cool air.

if i was you , and judging by ur car and engine combo i wouldnt skimp in any area of its build up , go and buy a cooler and or a kit from www.are.com.au , i am biased towards that company as i have known the owner for a good 13-14 odd years now, and have seen numerous back to back tests and logging etc of various coolers, and also have one on my vl

in other words , 400$ for a new cooler , no way , go spend that 400 on alcohol and waste ur money on something u will enjoy :)

not sure why you went the Hybrid choice over the stock GTR cooler as they are good for the power figures you are aiming for anyway. The thing to remember is how well it cools the air passing through, not so much how much it can flow. Not 100% sure on this one, but if you go too big it creates more lag. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

Ill give the cheapo a miss, its too much of a risk.

yep good choice i have seen gtr's with reasonable gain from 250rwkw over the stock gtr cooler. a good 100mm cooler is the way to go not a cheapie. the jap branded ones are proven as well whihc cant hurt

meggala

I had an ARE bar and plate on my GTSt and was very impressed :(

Another recommendation for ARE!

    • @GTSBoy This method was able to get readings of -10 to -2, so it looks like its monitoring.  Now I need to figure out why the vacuum on the line provided isn't alternating with manifold pressure.  I went with 2 lines that an RB25 tuner recommended but I'll get a longer hose and try directly off the back of the manifold.  He may have been used to OEM intake setups while I have a DBW setup that removed the MAF and IACV.
    • I work at a car detailing and tinting shop called Quark which gets all manner of German cars in usually (mainly due to a contract with Mercedes Benz Kita Osaka, BMW Nishinomiya and others) but every once in a while something special comes in, like a fully restored 1972 HS30 Nissan Fairlady 240ZG... The shop owner had immediately started applying film to the windows as soon as it was in the shop so the interior was completely covered in towels and plastic sheets. But I could get a few photos of the engine bay which was restored like new. Such an amazing car to see in pristine condition in Japan these days.
    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
