hi everyone im new to this board and just need some friendly advise

i have a R33 1993 model GTS not GTST :(

i am wanting to get started with preformance mods on my car and was wondering is it worth doing it to this enging or just get a engine swap to something that came stock with turbo like the rb26DETT or a 3L

and would any one be able to tell me how many RKWS my car has at the moment without any mods?

thanks heaps to everyone in advanced

hmmmmm

stock R33 GTS? about 90-100rwkw i would say

how long you had the car?

i would suggest selling it and just buying a turbo car rather than the hassle of an engine swap... you will find this is the most suggested option, and will provide the bigger brakes, LSD, 5-stud wheel pattern etc. that comes with the turbo car and not the NA...

but having said that someone put a 4.5L V8 in his NA R33 :whackit: (his username is NA_R33) so its up to you...

Warren.

All depends how far ya wantin to go with it

How many Rwkws ya after ?

im guessin with the stock non turbo engine is somethin around 100rwkws

and standard turbo rb25 engines have an average of 120-140rwkw

but then again ya rb26dett ya looking at about 230-250rwkws, but also comes with a hefty price tag to fit and buy . depends who ya know though.

correct me if im wrong.

for the price and power and availabiltiy i believe i would go for the rb25det .

but thats my opinion.

My mods are on my car for example at the moment:

Front mount intercooler

AVCR Controller 10psi

Ces Racing split dump

Highflow cat

3 1/4 exhaust

i went from completly stock from 122 rwkw to 166 just from doin those things there

i did a 15.2 down the quarter with mods and completly stock was a 16.1

but my car is an automatic which i have more power loss then a manual

thats why im convertin to manual now.

But yeah its all up to you though where ya wantin to go with it

but as soon as ya start, the more ya will want to do. haha but its good shit

Anyway theres my opinion for ya.

you serious around 90-100kws that kinda sucks i had a hyundai excel with some mods on it and it was getting around 180kws with just a turbo and extractors are you saying a excel can beat a skyline? i was under the impression that skylines could get up to the 300kws mark with not to much modding on the RB25DE ive only had the car 3months just got it

yeah 100rwkw would be about on the money. the stock gtst makes about 130rwkw. well the hyundai would have been running n/a compression so it will make a bit more power but will be limited to a low amount of boost. you wont get the rb25de to 300kw easily, even an rb25det requires a fair price tag to get to that power level. expect about $12,000 to go from 140wkw stocker to 300rwkw. if you want to spend money and upgrade your engine and get more power and want the best of all possible combos then i would highly suggest an rb30det conversion. rb30 bottom end, 25de heat with a turbo conversion. there should be numberous posts about it in the "R33 RB30 guide" which is at the top of the forced induction thread. going to an rb26 will be more costly or similar price, but youll have added torque from the 3 litre bottom end

mind you however i wouldnt be considering any "major" engine swaps without a fair $7000 hanging around. $2500 for motors and all the crap. $1500 labour. $1000 in upgrades as youll be maxing out the non turbo parts. post up if you are serious and how much you have someone on here (if not me) should be able to give a good estimate or even some real figures as they may have done it before

was that 180kws at the treads?

not too bad for a hyundai

im not too familiar with the non turbo engines but with rb25 gtst engines

i know they are fairly restricted.

like the standard exhaust, the side mount intercooler, Standard psi

turbo being limited to running 10psi, can run more but have chance of getin fins through the exhaust. But other ppl seem to run more and be fine . for a while .

Standard ecu,

after upgrading these things then ya have maxin out the injectors,

decresing the life of ya engine, then thinkin of cams, cam gears

then ya have to think about gearbox, strengthening that .

upgrading fuel pump .

and then tuning all the shit.

Skylines do have the cacpacity of makin some huge hp

just have to get all the restrictions out of the way. and upgrade a few, well a heap of things hahaha

but if you wantin over 300kws at the wheels, and ya have the money to spend

then i would opt for the rb26dett .

180kw at the front wheel on an excel with just a turbo and 'extractors'?

stock exhaust, no intercooler, no ecu upgrade...

riiiiiiiiiight...

i think it would have to either be HEAVILY modified, or it didn't happen

got a dyno graph?

the rb30/25 conversion will probably work out cheaper as you dont have to change looms and wiring in the car and a large chuck on the stock stuff should bolt up and match the wiring loom. whereas if you change to rb26dett you change to loom and wiring as well as all the other crap. also the rb30/25 will have more torque and should be an overall better package

tell him to look at the capa preformance web site thats the turbo i had there puts out 140kws+ at wheels then add an intercooler and the rest of it and you wont be to far off and its not to badly priced its a full kit but he will have most of it any way mayb he can arrange something there but now im getting off topic look at skylinesdownunder.com.au forum they have alot of talk of getting the RB25DE with after market turbo and stuff up to 280 for under 10G do you think this is a bit off?

your not talking about the capa supercharger kit are you.... ?

that 140kw figure they have listed is pure jibberish as proven on many hyundai forums :(

Chiptorque have a turbo kit for an excel running at 7psi it includes the intercooler etc etc.

On there site it lists the kit as a 35kw improvement, bringing the grand total to 87kw....

ill shutup now though :)

']Zer0rez,

Just to give you an idea of what sort of power a r33 GTS-T will make;

with

exhuast (turbo back)

FMIC

Air Filter

12PSI

SAFC oR PFC

you will make anywhere from 250rwhp tp 270rwhp

what do you mean by SAFC or PFC im getting a turbo back exhuast next week and the speed cut defencer i was toying with getting a ECU but i should leave that till one of my last mods is that correct?

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
