Thanks again.  I'm just worried that some won't be acring at idle yet at 9psi they may start to.

Or do you think you would see a small amount of arcing at idle to show if one is had it or not...

i cant answer that one for sure! but the arcing at idle is only a little bit anyway as in the car you can barely feel it its only a very slight miss, even when watching the motor as it does that you can only hear it miss a little bit.

if you see a few doing it u know that u might as well replace them all, if u only see one doing it its probably worth swapping that one for a good coil from somewhere to see if that was the only problematic one. or u could go on swapping your coils for good coils once by one to see which ones are stuffed but by the method i told u u can see which ones are really stuffed straight away.

Hey Siks. When you run the without that top cover over the coils did you find it necessary to use spacers/nuts to space out the ignitior module (located towards back off engine. Or does it not matter that the bolts will go in another 10-15mm further due to lack of the raised section on the plastic piece.

Thanks

hey i have a series 2 so there is no ignitor module that function is built into the coil..

i understand what your saying, and im pretty sure that friend who have left the cover off used the original bolts to hold it down, have u tried? if not just try the worst that can happen is that you just wont be able to screw them in anymore and the module wont be secure..

I have the cover off and I can't see any sparks at idle or when I rev it.

Does this mean the coils are fine?

Under boost there is a lot more pressure on them. Shuld I not give the coils the all clear yet??? As they may be leaking under boost and high load??

Maybe I should warm up the car more...

Thanks

Still no spark. Is it possible that I am hitting the boost cut at around 9.5-10psi??

I have an R34 intercooler so I guess that may mean I'm getting a little more airflow for the given pressure.

Also have 3" exhaust but that's it.

I thought guys with front mounts were running up to 12psi on standard ecu without boost cut (from excessive airflow)

i seriously doubt u are hitting boost cut..

are u sure u were somewhere really dark as the sparks are only small they are not bright at all

even if no sparks they might be stuffed just not that bad.

only thing to do now is swap the coils with someone else who has no problem, this will make the answer to whether it is the coils for sure. .. so go and pull some out of a friends car :D

u can actually remove the coil cover without removing the piping, i discovered this while being impatient/lazy one night :D if u just undo all the bolts u can slide it out as long as you remove the mount on the rear of the cover.

u might have to bend it a bit to avoid scratching it :(

Hey siks - when you saw thos e coils arcing was it only very small.

It has to be very dark and I can only see a tiny bit of light near the efge of about 3-4 coil packs.

Not really a shotting spark. more like very faint light every know and then.

anyone?

Yes, it depends on where the spark is jumping. If it is down the inside of the coil to the plug body, then it is hard to see. If it is from the outside of the coil to the cylinder head it is very bright and easy to see. :)

Mine appear to be arcing to the metal body around the coil packs (i.e. the part that you put the screws through) - It is only very faint - is this still something that could be causing the hesitation as I rev the car out?

It is on about 4 coils. It isn't a shooting arc I can just see some light every couple of seconds at each coil. Gapping the plugs to 0.8mm from 1mm hasn't helped at all.

The mechanic reckoned I should gap them to 0.6 - if this fixes it the n you know it is coil related. I'm thinking of borrowing a friends to check i.e. coil packs..

Problem mainly happens on cold night when air is a bit more dense - but occurs at about 8psi.

That would seem to indicate that the coil isn't earthed properly, are the bolts tight? :)

The bolts are pretty tight I think. The light is coming from the plastic body to the metal frame of the coil. I'll attach the pic here so you cans see where the burn marks are happening.

I didnt think this could be earthing prob?? Does that metal frame earth the coils?

Ok - so you think even though very faint light the coil packs are still cactus. I picked up some others to try that don't have the burn marks.

The wierd thing is you can see the light if very dark on about 4 coils. If you then rev it, while you are revving there is no light evident, however once you then back off the light (leaking) is worse.

Does this mean under acceleration they probably aren't leaking - or once you add boost they would.

On the dyno the guy couldnt find them leaking though I dont think he ran it for more than 5-10minutes and wasnt that dark.

Replaced with ones that are known to work at 19psi

STILL the same.

On these ones I can still see small amounts of light if dark! Not an arc but lights up lightly around the body.

The coils have no burn marks on the side...and actually my ones look good aswell.

Im thinking powerfc time!!

Maybe I am getting rich and retard at just over 8psi...

    • Yeah well per the video it took 15s for the stock unit to start up....even if I give it a few seconds discount for starting that is at least 12 sec before you get a reverse camera if you are trying to leave a park.  The android unit is way faster, but 2016 for the stock unit is a long time ago in consumer electronics
    • Yea that’s why I said ima test them with multimeter and see the reads.
    • Only at idle. Isn’t a problem when rev it seems.
    • @Haggerty This seems silly to ask, but are you confident in your ability to tune the Haltech?
    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since. Found my 'lucky' coin underneath the rear seat too The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLJ65pmQt44&t=6s
