I beleive that my alternator is starting to die. My mechanic has stated that due to it being a "Mitsubishi" alternator, they can not be reco'ed and Bosch has not yet released and "aftermarket" replacement for the R33.

Has anyone replaced a r33 s1 alternator?

Where did you find a replacement?

How much did it cost?

Was it a direct (no modification required) fitment?

Or has anyone actually managed to reco the std alternator?

ANY HELP ADVISE WILL BE APPRECIATED :)

Thanks

Alan

PS: I do not wish to buy a 2nd hand unit as these are now over 10yrs old. Nissan unfortunately sell these for about $1300 :).

when mine died for the s2 just an auto elec i found in the directory changed my stocker to a mitsubishi one, was $450 odd fitted. just direct swap in, swap out. probably doesn't help. the place is in sunshine, on mcintyre rd.

If you can pull it apart you might find the brushes are worn down. New brushes are only about $20. Could also be the voltage regulator but more likely the brushes.

If it spins fine with no noise the bearings are ok.

Mechanics and auto electricians often don't like pulling things apart. Happened with a toyota I had. Wanted $350 for a new one. I pulled the old one apart put new brushes in - worked till I sold the car (a couple of years)

You could get a cheap 2nd hand one. Wack it in - then try and refresh your old one. Put that back in and sell the 2nd hand one for what you paid.

Or talk to an auto electrician that is willing to rebuild your one approx 100-300 I would think

Bringing this one back! Lol. Just wondering if anyone knows of a direct bolt in 120a+ alternator for a series 1 r33 rb25de?

If i'm reading correctly, an aussie R31 with an RB30's Bosch 110a (close enough) is a direct fit, can someone confim that please? I have searched, and the above link is the closest I got. Any help appreciated.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
