I was at a local workshop, and noticed a bare RB26DETT head. The exhaust ports each had a "bulge" that seemed to be factory cast( I haven't seen many heads actually bare and off an engine to notice this cating thing...). The extend a reasonable way back into the head, and I'd offer an opinion that they'd take up a reasonable bit of real estate in the port, flow wise. The front three cylinders' bulge was facing,I think, rear + lower in the port, with the rear three cylinders facing forward + lower. I've heard a theory that they protect a waterjacket, but I've also heard that workshops grind them down to improve exhaust gas flow...so,no waterjacket. Are they fine on a standard engine, but removed on bigger power-up jobs? Nissan wouldn't have put these bulges there because they were bored. So;what gives?

Its to help direct the flow in the stock manifold. :D

Remove it if you are planning on using a nice tubular manifold.

In reality there is bugger all in it.

Thanks,Cubes! I hoped that was the idea. I have a really nice set of HKS extractors(the ones whose model escapes me-they have the "balancer" tubes between the front and rear three cylinders)that will most likely benefit from said removal ,and subsequent matching, when my head work gets done. If I was leaving the engine as standard,I wouldn't have touched these bulge things, but with what I have planned...well,it looks like they'll probably have to go! Thanks too for the more learned of my fellow SAU'ers that've kept an eye on my inexperience via this thread and helped accordingly! Cheers guys! Jayce.

    • Ha ha ha, that's fair mate! We have the crackhead dogs now. Mainly because the missus wants the crazy dogs while she still has the energy and capacity to be able to keep up with them! Ha ha our current two are both Working GSD, there brothers and sisters (from the same litters) are in Police, Corrective Services, and I believe one did end up in defence force too. They're wild and fun, yet right now, both curled up asleep on the lounge room floor while we watch some TV. Mal is very likely the next dog (unless I get my couch potato guardian dog 😛 )   What are your Kitties names? Are you planning some house work, like those high kitty shelves, built in scratching post, and some cat passages from one room to another room?
    • Maine Coone, did look at but to big and fluffy As for performance dogs, we had Mals at work, performance dogs are fun to watch, but, way to much work for this old rooster
    • Yep, it was only an option on the Q50 Hybrid.  Same in Japan as far as I know. And doesn't use a centre diff like the Suby's do, so not the same as the WRX.  But it also isn't a reactive AWD like other Nissan AWD vehicles are, eg. Murano/Xtrail/etc.
    • You should have got a Maine Coone then. Only thing is they're big. But so cool, and just like a dog. Or, just get yourself a high performance dog. That'll teach you for wanting Parkour indoors 😛
    • Are you thinking of Bens R32? I don't remember if his went through the bonnet itself, but it went through the chassis rail. Brad (RISKIN) bought it, and turned it into a track car. It's funny how anti people are of Jim Berry now. I remember when I pulled mine out (during an engine change) and inspected it and found it cracking badly. At that point in time so many people were even on SAU, were so pro Jim Berry, and that was after Bens GTR exploded his quite publically.
