I was reading in the WTB section, one of the guy's is after a Fuel Cap because of fumes leaking from the fuel lid...."sniffy" hit the nail on the head,,,there's probably nothing wrong with the cap at all,,, I have swapped 3 fuel caps off my wifes demos,,,still leaking.

It's more likely lazy Compliancers using silicone to seal the filler neck insert. I have the same problem and have been told to remove the insert and seal it properly using Sikaflex,,,,,.I'm wondering if anybody else has or had this problem and how they fixed it.

Neil.

Yeah Dude

I have replied to that Post (couldn't help it).

The surround of my R33's tank cap was "held on" by 3 blobs of some adhesive that obviously wasn't doing the trick.

My wife had bought another petrol cap before we realised what the problem was.

I used a well known silicone sealer to fix the problem and have had no worries since. There shouldn't be too much fuel in contact with this area under normal circumstances.

The fault is, indeed, lazy compliance work.

Enjoy!

Yep i had the same problem with my car it wasn't so bad in winter but the first hot day we had i noticed a real strong fuel smell in the car.I went over the whole fuel system looking for leaks and the last thing i checked the fuel filler and what do u know it pulled out with no effort at all used some sicaflex to stick it back on and 1 year later still no fuel smells :uh-huh:

yeah i seen this lots of times....use sikaflex on the filler neck..that doesnt disolve. Also the filler neck may be hydrasized too much if it is justput a shite load of sikuntflex :P around the ulp insert and shove it in and clean it up with some thinners where the excess spulrts out.Get it while its wet tho o/wise youl have trouble getting it off.Dont screw the cap on at all or very loose untill it dries then you should have no probs

Neil,

Yepp, mine is the same.

Sometimes I can get in the car and look in the side view miror and actually see the fuel fumes coming out !!!!

And after a long drive in hot weather the petrol cap will hiss for a while after I stop (Canberra people onthe last cruise to Corin Dam can confirm this !!!).

I have to get around to fixing it one day........ One day.......

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
