Hey All...

I've recently swapped over the el-crappo stock head unit (wouldn't play cd's anymore) with a new, single DIN one. Nissan has quoted approx $60+ for a DIN pocket for the remaining empty space which i don't believe is value for money considering that the pocket is handy but still relatively simple...

Out of curiosity, what has everyone done with the extra DIN Space? any brilliant ideas??

The only think of is to put gauges there? Autobarn advises that they may be able to order a cheaper universal DIN pocket made for a group of different make/models, but they don't appear to fit just right.

Does anyone know where to get cheaper, correctly sized din pockets???

Hi Blur

I got a generic DIN pocket for $15 from JB Hifi in Adelaide ... not sure if they are interstate. Was pretty easy to adapt and get it to fit in there.

I've also heard that pulsar DIN pockets fit in, you might be able to find one at a wrecker.

For gauges, you can buy 3 slot DIN gauge holders to fit 3 2" Gauges off Ebay, but they're pretty rubbish and a pain in the butt to install. (plus you need 3 2" gauges to fill it!)

If you have a cool $1000 to spare, Autobarn sells a single DIN DEFI gauge cluster.

you could try and find urself the din gauge cluster from a GTR and whack it in there, otherwise you could probably pick up a stock pocket from a wrecker in ur city like i did... i ended up payin $30 for mine which some may say is overpriced but it was made specifically for my car so y not go for stock! matches the cigarette compartment too :)

Funnily enough the guys at JB Hi Fi mentioned that i'd have to source a pocket from the nissan dealer. They did mention that they sold pockets for Toyotas which i believe won't fit. I guess they don't sell the universal one here?

I wonder if those 3 Gauge clusters fit cleanly, or if they require abit of fiddling... my main goal is to make it look stock i guess.

prosman:

Any tips on where to find that GTR Cluster?? I'm assuming their relatively pricey, i.e. 200+? Otherwise where'd you find your dash pocket? I think u bought the exact one that i'm after... looks like an ash tray with a fold down lid?? I wouldn't mind paying $30 for that...

I think i may have to go round to the wrecker...

make your own mate, it will cost you about $10 tops and you can do what ever you like with it.

You can mount your gauges in there, make a custom holder for your cd's, wallet, mobile, loose change about anything really.

Be a little creative and im sure you will come up with plenty of ideas champ.

If all else fails then buy that bit of plastic from the dealer for $60 and be done with it

Cheers B

Thanks for the input everyone...

I've gone down to Central Car Radio and picked up a JIN Pocket. The pocket itself does not have a flap as mentioned by some of the others, but i'm positive it will provide the best fit so far... it also appears to have been manufactured by nissan...

I'm happy... for now.

Cheers...

the din pocket u need for r33s is the same as in current pulsars, which is $32 from nissan, so i dont see how u got quoted 60, must have been the wrong one.

if u look in the sticky guide on how to install a head unit in this forum, it also says there u need a pulsar pocket.

good luck fitting the one u got anyway!

I'll try installing it on the weekend, fingers crossed i guess...

As for the Nissan quote, the customer service rep asked me for my chassis number, and from there she searched for the part # of the JIN Pocket? She mentioned that there were many different JIN Pockets for R33s, something which i have no clue about...

If this pocket doesn't fit, I'll pursue the Pulsar route... The situation is lookin' alot more hopeful now... i thought i was destined to have an ugly HU install....

Nissan parts people love FAST - some people will insist looking up my car even when I explain the part I'm trying to find won't even be listed with my VIN cos it came off another model.

JustJap in sydney sell lots of those DIN pockets/drinkholders. They're about $15-20 and they have the stock ones and generic ones.

Unfortunately they don't have cefiro ones so I've used a piece of fibreglass with a carbon fibre top coat on it to block up the space for now. I will be putting gauges in there eventually :)

I was able to source a DIN pocket which has fitted perfectly into the dash & the mounting holes. Exceptionally happy with the find as I was beginning to get peeved at the massive hole under the HU. I purchased it from Stylin Car Audio on Nepean Hwy... it was 39 bucks...

I'll still need to play with the surround on the HU face... Fibre glass doesn't sound like a bad idea....

ugly head unit installs are the worst! they are something so small that ruins the interior!

when i had my XPLOD HU in my TX5, the sony surround fit perfectly inside the factory larger surround that sat around it...

then i changed to a pioneer, and they're surrond is a lot bigger, and wouldnt fit...the guy was like "ill just leave it off coz it wont fit"

Bullshit! make it fit...so now the pio HU sits a tiny bit more out of the factory surround, but still looks factory, and has the pioneer surround.

hopefully i can get the same result when i put a pioneer in the skyline! and thanks for the info on the pulsar pocket...if it fits perfect and is half the price, thats sweet!

will they ask for a VIN etc if u just say you want the pocket from the pulsar?

yep thats right

the pioneer surround definetly fits and an r33 dash.

at first it seems like it wont, but u gotta get the angle right and fiddle around a bit to get it in, there was no way i was leaving mine off it looks stupid without.

    • When you say your cams are 272/262 is that 272in and 262ex?
    • We're arguing semantics. I am saying 45 accel and a 55 deccel ramp are "2 ways". Even a 45 degree ramp and an 89 degree ramp is "2 ways", because it is literally... two ways. The cusco 55/30 ramp is a 2 way. It's two ways. I get it though - in normal nomenclature a "2 way" would be 45/45 or 55/55 or 60/60 i.e the same locking in both directions. And something like 45/65 would be considered "1.5 way". I would then say if we're getting into the nitty gritty then every locking diff is a "2 way" diff and we should not speak in 1.5, or 2 ways but ramp angles instead. Which ofc if one of those ramp angles is 90deg, that side is not doing any locking. :p So Nismo don't obviously sell 3 things. The fact of the matter that they only sell two items really goes to show that there's a 2 way and a "1,5 way" which is really a 1 way. I believe the actual lockup for the 'adjustability' of the GT pro is really just setting preload for when the ramps actually start locking up. It's not changing how much 'wayness' there is. It is (somehow) horribly explained. People just buy whatever diff and go "locks up good bruh" and that's what ends up on socials forever.
    • No, you're wrong, and you've always been wrong about this. The Nismo has 2 sets of openings. One is a real 2-way, and the other is a 1-way. There is no 1.5-way possible with the ramps that they offer. A real 1.5-way does exist. That Cusco stuff I posted is a prime example. If the forward drive ramps are, say 55°, and the overrun ramps are, say, 30°, then you will get about half as much LSD effect on overrun than you do on drive. It is real, it realy works. OK, you're slightly right. The Nismo has 55° and 45° ramps on the 2-way, so it does offer less LSD effect on overrun. But, I think that just means that they've (probably) sensibly established that you do not want actually equal LSD effect on overrun. You just want "quite a lot, but not quite as much as the drive LSD effect".
