i have teh exact same problem with the fronts springs...

they are much too wide for the lower spring seat.........

hence i thought someone put the wrong spring seats with the shocks... because the rear seat fitted much better with the front springs.......

Thanks to Burns we have identified what the problem is. Some kits were sent out with 83139 springs instead of 83159. The 83159's are in stock at Whiteline, so the turn around will be quick. PM me and I will arrange for a replacement set (83159) to be sent out and the 83139's picked up and returned.

PS; One of the guys has found his Stagea to be a bit low even with the lower spring seat circlip set on the highest position. Since we have all sorts of specifications with double sunroofs, substantial sound systems etc, all subsequent Bilsteins have been machined with 3 extra grooves to give additional height if required.

If you find yours is a bit low for your requirements you can either return them and I will have Bilstein add the extra grooves. Or you can have your local suspension/machine shop do it. It is fairly simple, they are 1.5 mm grooves, 0.6 mm deep and with 8 mm between them.

Under no circumstances should the springs be reset, higher circlip grooves are the best and cheapest method for achieving the extra height you want.

Are circlip grooves legal? Compared to say, adjustable coilovers?

Circlip grooves are a standard fitment, lots of shocks use circlips to retain the lower spring seat. Many new cars come with circlip grooves, for example any of the Subarus equipped with Bilsteins (B4, STI etc ) have circlip grooves.

I have had 20 or so cars checked for initial rego with screw spring seat height adjusters and none of them have had any problems either. It's more a matter of legal height, than how that height is achieved.

Let's face it, aftermarket mud flaps are technically "illegal", so are non standard spark plug gaps. It all depends on how fine a line you want to draw.

Yep, Whiteline have them in stock usually. I was pleasantly surprised at how much difference the extra caster made on our Stagea. Takes that dull feeling out at straight ahead and adds a bit of weight to the steering. Not a lot, but enough to feel like you are in control.

Yep you will need a press to push the old rubber bushes out and push the new ones in. They are a tight fit. It would probably be easies to take the car to a suspension place to have them fitted as you should get a wheel alignment done after fitting them any way.

Anyone want to Buy my white line sway bars, they have only been used for about 3 or 4 months, excellent condition. Selling them as I'm selling my car.

I do however have a question regarding my next suspension purchase; I have no want or desire to 'lower' the car (hard enough getting into the car as it is being so tall and with bad knee pain).

If I was to lower it at all, it'd be like by a bees-dick, maybe just to sit the nose of the car over my new R34 GTT 17inch mags (being fitted in a few days time with Hankook K104 235/45/17 tyres).

Can the Bilstein shocks be used with the Standard stagea springs?

Also, I gather then its a waste of money to buy a front and rear camber kit set if Im not going to be lowering the car?

Hi Brendan, I used the standard springs with the Bilsteins shocks for several months. I also had the stabiliser bars and caster kit fitted at the same time for a very acceptable ride/handling balance. My Stagea was nose up when it arrived, and I used to get the “it’s very high” comments. So I lowered the front 20 mm using the extra circlip grooves and left the rear as it came. I didn’t get any “its low” comments, but the “it’s high” comments stopped. It didn’t need any camber correction at that height, the standard rear camber adjusters had just enough.

Im going to order a set of front and rear Bilstein shocks then, and the sub-frame alignment to finish it off. I shall send a PM to you when I order those products; got to chat to the wife first.

    • Then today, I went to visit a man with an r33 hat Peter and Road and Race sorted the alignment. As it is being set up for general track/hillclimbs etc it has a heap of caster (7o), less camber than I am used to (1o front and 2o rear, as the caster looks after that in turns without the braking downsides), 3mm front toe out and 0 toe rear. Will see how that goes and track tyre wear to see if it does need more camber, but adjsustment is also limited with nismo arms and adjustable bushes at only 1 end. It does have a bent inner tie rod on the driver's side front but as it came up within spec I'll just leave that as is. So, that is getting close to my chapter of this story....could of tidy ups then a shakedown in early October before it finds a new home.
    • So, it went to Unigroup for a run in and tune on Friday, everything went (generally) well. In terms of fixes, the engine was good and there were no leaks. It needed plugs (I hadn't checked them because the coil pack cover was on a new engine and I couldn't imagine they weren't new.....but turns out the temporary plugs to just keep it sealed up were in there.....new plugs gapped to 0.8 and it was fine from there. Also, there was a little preload on the clutch slave which caused some slip. I haven't had the box off so I don't know what the clutch looks like; my guess it is brand new and the pedal had not been adjusted....backed that off a bit and it held fine. Last thing will have Dose crying....the idle especially when cold is a bit difficult between the cams, forward plenum, atmo blow off valve and an 80s air management system. It is fine when hot but a little uneven when cold, will see if I can sort or at least improve that one cold morning. Other than that, tuning went fine. It made 245 but was pulled back to 227 which 2 opportunities to improve in future. 1. The factory CAS is not great and was jumping around at high RPM, so Mark took 2 degrees out up top (that is why it stops making power and lost 20kw). Very safe this way and the extra power is available but will require a more modern ECU and better cam (or even better crank) sensor 2. The 2871 in factory housings is very big for a low mount, and the internal wastegate is too small, so it was creeping from mid range all the way to redline....the duty cycle on the boost controller is turned down a little for safety. That is much harder to fix, it would need a large external gate and that would require a whole bunch of other changes, so it will go as it is for now. It feels nice and healthy and safe, so should be good for about a billion laps like this.
    • what sort of caliper are they? If they are a slider and you gave everything a good clean, you might need to regrease the pins. My guess though is they will come good after some abuse as suggested above
