I have purchased a Skyline that has arrived from Japan (In April). However it is the first of its model being complied by the workshop.

The workshop completed the evidence pack some months ago, however I am still waiting for the DOTARS inspection/sign off for the car.

The question I have is simply this - are DOTARS under any sort of obligation to inspect it within a certain timeframe?

If you do a search through some of the posts here, you'll find that there are a few others still waiting who've been waiting similar periods to you.

From the DOTARS website: "Once all the information supplied is complete and correct, the time taken to have a workshop inspection is dependant on the availability of VSS, State or Territory inspectors and the volume of inspection and other work of the inspectors concerned. The number and frequency of receipt of workshop applications is beyond the control of VSS and the resources available for processing applications cannot be varied sufficiently to meet this varying demand"

nouvo33: this is referring to a RAWS who hasn't received full sign off to comply cars yet.

Am I correct in reading that in your case, the RAWS already has the approval to comply R33s and you're simply waiting for plates for your car? Because I haven't heard it taking much longer than a month, tops, to receive the plate from Canberra.

Maybe one of the RAWS who frequent this forum (Abflug, Driftt, etc) can back me up on that statement (or correct me).

yeah, the car has been RAWS complied (ie what ever parts need to be changed has been changed) but it's really been awhile.... :)

guys, would a locked diff cause the compliance to fail?

oh man.... do i know what you guys are going through... i too have my car being used as a test car for a workshop.

here's a little run down...

- Car purchased Japan car yard, late May 2004

- Landed Brisbane late July

- Complications, storage required,

- Arrives workshop mid/late August

- Workshop needed to do ISO approval (took awhile)

- Wait for engineer paperwork

- Compliance work done (finished around November?)

- Missed December inspection day due to.... i'll leave it there

- Next inspection available time... March 2005

- Inspection done, quite a lot of D.I.'s arrised

- Got car from workshop, first weekend of March (car no longer needed)

- D.I.'s answered late June

- Answers required further work

- 2nd round of answers to D.I.'s submitted 29th September (personally delivered to DOTARS)

- Saga ongoing...

Bottom line. Car purchased Japan late May 2004. Now early October 2005, still no compliance plate.

hope your workshops and engineers are ontop of everything. Especially engineers.

lesson learnt? don't use your own car as a test car, even if compliance was free. Not worth it at all.

djr81: looks like a little ways to go mate :D once u get the inspection done, make sure D.I.'s are answered AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Engineers need to be on the ball there.

nouvo33: Has the workshop had an inspection day?

Not sure when the inspection is due. DOTARS are allegedly going to advise the workshop this week. The joys of living in WA I suppose. May do a little more groundwork on exactly who the engineer is.

nouvo33: is your car a test car? or has your workshop been compiling skylines already? do you remember anything about Discussion Items or Inspection Days, anything like that?

Just wondering if you're just waiting on a plate normally, as in, a workshop that is already up and running as a RAW.

2 weeks since 2nd round of D.i. answers were submitted to canberra, no change on the website :)

hey man, was just wondering:

1. with a test car, what do they do with it? Would the car be smashed and repaired and then complied?? i mean that is a weird thought because there have been thousands of skylines brought into the country and DOTARS must already know the safety rating and stuff at the back of their heads. Why a test car?

2 . what does "D.I." mean?

sorry for asking such basic questions, guys but i am kept in the dark from mycar and i am losing patience by the minute

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
