Here's what Bass Junky emailed to me one day.

I sent him the pic and he sent it back.

"Hi,

Looking at the photo, I will make an assumption that the top turbo is of an R34 GTT.

I have added a couple of little lines on the photo which illustrate the differences that I think there are between the R33 and R34 turbos.

The relationship between the width of the gap between the snail and the flange, and the width of the flange itself is a pretty good indication of the turbo.

R33 has a wider gap than the width of the flange, and the R34 or VG30 turbo has a gap which is slightly thinner that the width of the flange.

Does this make sense?

Cheers"

um was under the ausmption that 33 were cermaic but also ball bearing

SteveGTS4 pulled one off a series 1 GTST, and it wasn't ball-bearing. Noone is correcting either of us though!

Thanks to everyone whos read this and had an opinion, you've all been very helpful.

Cheers to you all. I'll report back and let you know what it is!!

Plus a power figure for my Stagea!! hahaha

(Got 141kw now at the 4wheels, putting on beefier fuel lines, fuel regulator & fuel pump, Z32afm, apexi sitc, apexi fmic, & neo turbocharger. Expecting 160+kw at the 4wheels.)

Brendan

Going by your info Abo Bob; damn it, the turbo I paid good hard cash for is therefore a bloody R33 turbo - which is what Ive already got!

Cubes: the thickness of the housing seems to be 45mm not 50mm. Suggests R33 not R34.

Man Im not happy!!! Just because its got a platic front wheel its been assumed & sold to me as a R34 turbo.

Add in with that the blowing fuses after the stereo install = no ABS or 4wd, and boy am I an unhappy person..... the auto electrician the car is with at the moment has requested me to supply him with the cars wiring diagrams etc!

Grrrrrr

Yup, will do, will take another photo asap.

Trying to get to A.T.S. here in SA to have it properly examined; if it is the R33 then I might as well start saving and hiflow it, then sell my current turbo of the Stagea.

Going by the thickness of the housing (45 not 50mm) and the thickness of the flange and distance from 'snail to flange' from your post, its gotten R33 written all over it.

Its so damn hard to get around the place to have things checked when you work too many hours!!!

and i have a curve ball

i recently bought another turbo. fairly certain its VG30 .. later model.

OP6 on the housing. very stumpy looking dump pipe but the compressor has 45V4 on it. seems pretty large from the measurements.

just thought i'd throw that up.

So if this R33 turbo measures up as 45mm thats the same as my rb20det turbo. :O

I remember discopotato stating the R33 turbines are slightly larger than the R32's. Is this really the case?

Angry, that VG30DET turbo, could you do a few measurements and post a pic of the compressor wheel?

It would be great if and when you rotate the compressor housing (as you have to do with the vg30det turbo's) could you remove it and measure the compressor wheel.

Being the 45V4 and slightly newer than the one I have it woul dbe interestering to see if they uprated the compressor wheels. The later model Vg30DET's made 206kw vs the ~190kw earlier models.

The Vg30DET turbo I have has the same compressor wheel as the rb20det turbo's, exactly the same. The only difference being the turbine and compressor cover is larger, obviously allowing for higher airflow.

Well, Im still going to go the Adelaide Turbo Services and have it checked out (when I get a chance; they can do the piping for my new Apexi fmic with the C-bend behind the cooler, so that original pipeholes can be used).

Might start saving anyways and have the turbo rebuilt with steel wheels, I'll discuss that with the shop when I get there. Pretty much I want this turbo to give me around 30more 4wkw.

But if its no good, then Ive got 2 turbos to sell, and with the change grab a HKS 2535 off nengun! We'll see, not too sure what the plan of attack will be now......... will let you all know.

Guys, had Bill at Adelaide Turbo Services check out the turbo I bought. Its definately a series 2 R33 RB25 turbo charger and actuator. I got ripped off by a forum member who contacted me and told me he'd sell me his R34 Neo turbo.

Paid $650 for this turbo - although it is in very good condition, I got reamed as it is NOT a Neo turbo. Now Im probablt going to have to save up a further $2100 and do a GT30 internal fitout to it (next stage up from a GCG hiflow). But Im not happy about how this has panned out.

In fact Im 'upset' by the fact that a forum member would go out of their way to contact me saying they've got a Neo turbo from a R34, ask good dollars for it as if they are doing me a favour, but yet not do the research to determine whether it is in fact a Neo turbo.

To all of you others, thanks for your posts and extremely helpful information that you've kindly supplied me.

EDIT: oh well, thats how its goes sometimes.......

Yah, I sent a long txt message asking for a chq to be sent to me..... I received a heap of calls afterwards but I couldnt bring myself to talk to the seller - was just too angry.

Fact is, Ive got a SII R33 turbo on my Stagea, I have no need for another! Buyer beware I guess.

    • Was there ever a model of the Stagea m35 that didnt have a badge on the grill? I thought I saw that somewhere, some aero edition or something? I cant find it again? davemoto
    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
