hey wet gtr, autronics is what im running with my engine combo (jun 2.7L stroker, hks t04z) and everyone has said u need an autronics CDI after 500rwhp or so, and they are bloody dear, i think i paid $1300 for it :(

that allows u to run MSD coilpacks (cheap as) and remove your ignitor pack.

good luck

Hi Brad,

Nice - a JUN 2.7 strocker, HKS T04Z & to top it off an Autronics running the show!

A nice nice package there :(

I'm running around 560hp (417kw) @ wheels & still have standard ignitor and spitfire coil packs. I haven't got big issues but I'd like to know what benefits I'd get if I buy the Autronics CDI - wow $1300 thats no small change!!!

Others like R32-GTS run even more power then me & still retain their standard system.... why spend $1300 or even half that if it works atm. There must be something I'm missing that I don't know about?

Any idea's?

Adam

PS Autronics CDI running MSD coil packs seem's like a popular setup for a GTR, must work well.

Anthony's need4spd GTR with twin to4z  is now running close to 900rwhp but runs splitfire coils and a HKS twin power spark amplifier. They are meant to be very good.

Had a look at Nengun, they sell the HKS Twin Power Unit for $517.23 which is almost 1/3 the cost of the Autronics CDI unit.

I wonder which one would be the superior product?

R32-GTS, your not running any of these aftermarket CDI units & you have 600 awhp.

When do we need to get these CDI units or is there some other benefit in getting them anyway, maybe opening up the gap of the spark plug to .8 which will give out a better burn, maybe they run better economy with a larger gap and stronger spark?

I read the HKS decription but it mostly states that its good for a smoother rev at high rpm and stops misfires.

Any idea's?

Adam, you know what im gonna say dont ya

ring "the man" :)

But i'll tell ya what he'll say, get the HKS Twin power thingy

Lots of em using it here, usually above 400rwkw.

cheers - ash

Hi there Ash!! :D

I know, I know, your right!

I feel like I bug him at times ringing him up and always asking for his advice, but I know the answer he gives is the right one.

What would we do without him.... ;)

Those HKS Twin Power CDI's don't look too bad at the price.

How ya been anyway Ash?

The man has been so busy lately, at times he doesn't pickup his phone for days.

Thanks for the advice.......again - it's a nice reminder that if ever in doubt, make a call.

Do you know of some of the benefits Ash of getting an aftermarket CDI Unit?

Thanks,

Adam

not exactly sure, but we were going to do it with my RB25 if i didnt get EPA'd...

Basically the stock coils couldnt put enough spark out to ignite the better fuel we were using for a while with the boost we were running.

The simple fix was the HKS gizmo basically :(

I hate the EPA.....very bad dudes :(

Hope you get through it, they are my biggest fear!!! I hate those guys.

Sounds like you had a problem and this was the solution.

Might make a call and see if its a good thing to do.

There is also a weight difference between the Autronics and HKS CDI where HKS weight is 450g the AUtronic CDI weight is 750g. Maybe more electronic stuff in there.

Thanks for your help Ash!

I think im going to try the HKS twin power soon and see how it goes. Should be able to open the plug gap back up to 1.1mm for a better burn etc.

haha, you never know..... he might be reading this now, please tell us something

I thought the stock gap was 0.8mmmm on the plugs.... why 1.1mm

You doing this any time soon R32-GTS?

I am very interested to see what the before and after results would be.

Will you let us know how it goes?

Hey, you guys that are running the Autronics; are they SMC's? I've heard that you need the CDI's when using the SMC with RB engines (sounds like im speaking in code!). Im using an Autronic SM4 on my RB26 with a GT35, as ive been told that the SM4 doesnt have/cause any spark issues and the CDI is not needed.

Just wondering.

Also, any problems with MAP and 6 throttles? Hows drivability?

Thanks,

Shaun.

Hey mate im running the autronics SMC ecu (was fine on 360rwhp) and now after the build im running the autronics cdi as well, drivability is bloody perfect, and cold starts etc are as good as factory. (rebuild is still underway, aiming for high 600rwhp mark)

WetGTR if i was u i'd double check u can run the HKS CDI with autronics, because ive heard the autronics cdi is the only one to run with the ecu.

www.autronics.com have some info on the cdi's voltage outputs which ive been told is superior to the hks unit, and similiar ones.

good luck and ask some reputable shops first, not just 1, try an autronics tuner and he will know the benefits etc :D

remember u get what u pay for

cheers

Brad

Shaun: I'm running the Autronics SMC with stock ignitor and spitfire coil and have no real issues atm. Have to agree with StageZilla that drivibility is so perfect with cold starts that are like factory. No problems with 6 throttle bodies. Can't really say anything bad about the Autoronic unit except price and not as many tuners as say the Power FC but worth every cent.

Brad: I've read the information on the Autronics Website relating to their CDI unit. It really does sound like a superior product then say the HKS one. Just trying to find out the benefits of a better CDI system cause some people spend over $1000 on them and if I'm to do the same, you'd like to know why you need it and what benefits your going to get.

Did you have to upgrade to the CDI unit because of a problem or issue or was it just done because it was part of your build?

I know the HKS unit is a plug and Play design but the Autronic unit doesn't look complicated to wire in.

i only added mine ready for the new setup as my tuner said its a neccessity at that power level and they said the spark output is huge compared to stock. like spark can jump 10cm rather than 1cm or so, but thats only what ive heard from experts, not my own experience, wiring diagram is on the site and is easy, only about 10 wires all up which aint difficult :)

i read the highest voltage output is 500 volts hence the CDI 500R name i think, wouldnt wanna touch the coil when it sparks :D

I think I'II keep my hands right away............ way away :D

Wow Brad, you really went all out when you did your build, very nice setup you have. Any plans for your monster :)

Regarding this CDI thing, might have to call the man- as Ash suggested and find out what he has to say.

I'm sure if I had to pick, it would be the Autronic 500R CDI unit. They make some real top of the line stuff and since I already have the Autronic SMC, that just seems the logical way to go.

When I speak with him, I'II post up what he has to say - if I can remember everything..... ;)

I can't speak about the Autronic CDI, but we have used the Motec ECU and CDI on a few cars. Firstly I should say that we don't use the Motec CDI with standard coils (or Spitfires for that matter). CDI fires multiple times per ignition cycle and so it needs a coil that has a faster recovery time than the more normal one fire per ignition cycle. So we use Mercury outboard coils as they are designed for use with CDI. I believe this is the same system that Wilson and/or Munro are using.

What we have found is;

1. The plugs (copper NGK's) last a lot longer before they start to break down.

2. There is lees unburnt fuel in the oil samples

3. There is less carbon deposits in the combustion chamber

4. The exhaust gas temperature is lower, ~75 degrees is not unusual

5. The exhaust valves are not showing as much signs of distress, so we have extended their service life

6. The hot start is much easier, without the CDI at times it would take a few cranks to start

7. We picked up around 55 ft lbs of torque on the engine dyno at 5,500 rpm, with good increases from 3,000 rpm to 8,000 rpm

8. Obviously this translates to horsepower increases, around 40 bhp in most spots over 5,250 rpm.

9. None of this happened wthout tuning, we were able to advance the ignition a little without detonation, we were able to increase the fuel (Elf Turbo Max) without changes in A/F ratios, we were able to hold the boost level, but increase the airflow. These are all indicators of more complete combustion, which is exactly what you would expect/want from an ignition upgrade

The bottom line don't expect to bolt on a CDI and pick up 50 bhp, it isn't that simple.

:P cheers :(

PS; if you think the Autronic CDI is expensive, wait until you price the Motec.

Well as of tonight i have no second gear any more haha. Accelerating in second gear and then a loud bang. Managed to drive it home in 4th though. All good.

Oh no!! :(

Not good!! Need something stronger now. Maybe something like the OS Giken 5 gear set upgrade.

Not a cheap item! I thought mostly 3rd gear goes on a GTR box not second.

Were you just trying to accelerate or something more like clutching it?

Hope my box keeps holding...... runnning that redline gear oil in it - that will hold it together won't it..... :P (I'm expecting alot from an oil arn't I hahaha)

What are you thinking of doing now R32-GTS, having 600hp has it down side don't it?

cheers

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
