hi guys,

im thinking of buying an r33 gtst at the end of this year. cars are not my forte, and my parents are really fobby so no help either. i just wanted to know how you guys went through the buying process, i.e how long it took, how you did rego, insurance etc. im currently on my red p's and one of the cars im looking at is listed as 18.5k on carsales. will be paying cash and i was wondering if i could make a deal with the salesperson where he does rego and insurance etc and we pay him like a lump sum. would that be worthwhile in terms of money cause i think for a car dealer they'd have mechanic friends and rta friends etc. who could compliance etc.

basically im like a newborn who knows nothing about buying cars. any info would be highly grateful,

John

hey man! im a chick and so i kinda faced similar probs to u but more so getn ripd off by carsales cuz im a chick...so i took my bro whos a expert on cars for da shpon...i ackted like i knew all...but when the car sales man went away my bro filled me in on which cars were worth the money....under the bonnet to.....and what price i could bring it down to...basiclaly i searched every australian internet site almost everyday for like 2 months searching for a then r33...to get a idea for prices for what model, year, mods etc. mines non turbo cus of the restriction and i bought it for 16k.

generally speaking if ur payn cash...well 18k is risky...bank transfer is beta....they pay for rego...i

nsurance...even for non turbo..i could only isure with jsut cars....thiere best.....cus for a full body kit...ata market exhaust...n a $1300 sound syste,...it only costs 100 bucks per year extra to insure.........so ur best doing it urself...they have a younger driver policy...but i pay 1500 per year n its non turbo..mostly standard.........

my parent gave me the loan. basically at 7.35% fxd ineterst...for 5 years... (i took out a 22,ooo loan) i pay 105 bucks a week......maybe put to ur parents it would sound better.... i think thats affordable esp if u earn 500 bucks a week and not prone to spill it........

i have 2 bank accounts. one bank account my wages go into it...and every friday nite (before i go out n spill it all! ) 105 bucks auto debit comes out for da loan and 140 bucks goes into da oder account for savings............so u can save for parts n crap esp if u have a accidetn and u have to fork up 1000 in excess, rego, modsetc......

v.i.p automotive solutison did a check on my car...dats to make sure its not actualy 2 cars soldrerd onto each other..and that it hasnt been thrashd... they can also neogotiate u da price.....

but if u can bring it down 2-3 grand incl rego ur beta doing itsurelf...depends if ur prepaired to 'walk away' and not believe them when dey say da car is going to be bought by another person...cus truth being...da car will still be there in 2 months time. tel:0500 555 227 (vic) www.vipinspections.com

if u have any fwds that are fully into da import thing ur beta takn them rather than gong urself.....not act like u in love wit da car...just act like its 'okay' n dat ur kinda interseted...but uve seen beta pride 4 it........cars sales men are smart...uve gotta outsmart them.

i bought my car from jsa imports. featurred in hpi mags....they have vip thing dat comes wit the car......afta market parts n all....laws are getn stricted n all carsales men wodnt seell u da car unless it was fully complianced...its part of the car price..

regrdsless if u pay them cash...at da end of da day if they dont delcare..n r wiling to take cash to not declare...it means theyre dishonest to da govenrment....n if there dishonest to da government whats gona stop them from doing that to u???

oh n to ensure it aginst theft u need a 1.5? point immobilser n alarm...so dats bout 200-400bucks....so try n get the car wit one...

i want a turbo....gtr!!! but i dont know much bout cars ider...thats why i got a non turbo....im gona do a mechnaics couse before i get a gtr...becuase they need regualar fixn...tuning etc.......u first need to be prepared to spend dosh...ebcuase if u cant fix things urself then u gotta pay to get them done.

wat was suggested to me was..."if ur not gona fiddle round wit it get a non turbo"...n mines a daily driver....so til then im learning bout the car to be prepoared for my gtr cus i wana ustomize it to me.....its up to u n how much u earn...thyere a beautiful ride...very sexy cars i think!!!!

how much ks has the 18.5k one done??? stock standard? mods??year??

hope this is helpful

oic thanks. my friend owns a supra and he knows quite alot about cars so im bringing him along. the one im looking at is a 1998 gtst series 2 m spec (drool) and we're paying cash so we can drop the price. i was hoping to get it down to around the 16 mark so i can pay for insurance (3.5k with just cars!). as for the immobiliser and that i think my friend can install it for me or maybe it comes with it itself. i havn't been able to inspect the car as yet but on carsales it says its done 82k, full gtr kit and hks after market tuning. most importantly i reakon it looks pretty cool and from what i can see on the photos the car looks in good condition. however it has had an accident before, on the back, but has been repaired and the guy said there was no damage to shocks etc. but will have to test it out when i get to drive it.

it doesnt have a road worthy certificate and im not sure if it has been complianced. i was hoping that i could get him to do all that compliancing and stuff because i dont really know what to do (i suck i know) however my friends more than willing to help out with the buying process and any other problems i may have with it in the future.

i wont be able to check out the car until mid november (HSC) so i was hoping to get as much info/advice as i can before then so i can really get a good deal. thanks for the advice guys

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.
    • I have the 2025 build re003s’ on my 06 XT Forester Turbo and I quite rate them for street wet and dry
    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.
    • Remember, take original quote. Double it. Then add a bit more. It's how any project goes.
    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
