Hey guys,

My reverse lights aren't working on my manual R32 GTS-t.

So far I've tried looking at the basic stuff first. I tested both reverse lamps and they aren't blown. I also decided to check the voltage across the reverse light plugs (at the rear bar not gearbox yet) and it was reporting 0.06V in reverse and 0.04V in neutral on both sides... :D

And just before I went to check every fuse under the dash and 2 were blown but I'm not sure if they are related. For starters, wtf does the "Shift lock" fuse do? (Can't be central locking because it's currently working). The "Transmission control" fuse was also blown but isn't this used for Autos only?. (BTW: My car used to be auto)

I don't have new fuses on me at the moment so I'll have to replace them tomorrow but can anyone let me know if the reverse lights are related to those 2 fuses and what these fuses do.

Thanks :P

BTW: I was going by the fuse labels used here: http://www.skylinegts.co.uk/R32-Fuses.htm

I've seen auto cars with a shift lock, so i'd guess that it is for locking an electric auto gearbox into gear.

As for the reverse prob, I have it too on my R33, and i've been told that there is a reverse-switch on the gearbox. I've located what I beleive it to be, and it has a wiring harness on it. Makes sense though... how else do the lights know when to come on? =-]

Sounds like your car used to be an Auto.

There should be the best part of 12V at one side of the reverse lamp when reverse is engaged (with Ign = ON). Check both sides for ohms to earth (1 side should be 0 (or close to it) - that will be the earth / -ve side).

I'd put money on a broken reverse switch in the gearbox, or a broken wire attached to the switch.

I haven't had time to check the wiring next to the gearbox sensor yet but I will this weekend. If the gearbox switch is broken are they expensive to replace?

And I don't know what you mean by there should be 12V on only 1 side of the reverse lamps, shouldn't each lamp be getting 12V each? :P

Also I'm guessing the the reverse lights has no relation to the "transmission control" and "shift lock" fuses since they had to do with AUTO?

OK, I just replaced both fuses and the reverse beeper started beeping for 5 seconds then instead of beeping it now does a continual whine. At that time my reverse lights worked but after a short drive I noticed the beep and lights didn't come on when it came time for me to reverse. I checked the "Transmission Control" fuse and it's blown again.

Stupid of me but for the moment I've put in a 15amp fuse to replace the 10amp.

So does anyone have any ideas why the fuse would blow after a short drive?

I'm thinking I might have the wrong rated bulbs in, so does anyone know the correct rating for R32 GTS-r reverse bulbs.

ahhh.. so whoever did the conversion actually wired up the reverse-switch on the gearbox eh? On an auto, I think the switch is in the gear-selector.

So.. it's been hooked up, but blows fuses... and the beeper whines. I'd take a guess and suggest that there is a short somewhere that causes the beeper to stay on, and the fuse to blow. I wonder if the beeper runs off a relay?

I just did an auto to manual conversion.

The shift lock is only for the auto.

It locks the car in park until the ignition is on and your foot is on the brake pedal.

Transmission control is auto only.

I guess when they did the conversion they left some of the unused wires to short out and blow your fuses.

If the reverse lights worked since the conversion I put my money on it being a worn out reverse light switch in the g/box. It's very common. They cost about $25 from Nissan.

If you've never had them working then they may not have been hooked up properly when the conversion was done.

Check the neutral position switch as well.

I've been told if it's not working the car thinks it's in neutral and retards the timing.

Both switches are on the drivers side of the box and look the same.

The rear one is the neutral switch and the front one is reverse.

I posted a thread on how to wire these.

Of the wires that went to the auto box the green wire and the thinner of the two black wires are for the reverse switch and the white and the same black wire are for the neutral switch.

They all plug into the cluster of connectors mounted on the side of the fusebox under the bonnet.

Just make sure the right wires are hooked up to the right switch.

The beeper is part of a module called shiftlock controller

On the auto I converted this module was mounted on a bolt that is used to mount the clutch pedal box in a manual so I disconnected it and threw it in the bin. No problems.

Get rid of it.

While you're under the dash check that the clutch switch is wired up. If it's not, there is a plug for it taped to the auto loom just above the clutch pedal.

The clutch switch helps to stop the car from stalling when you clutch on the overrun or during gear changes.

This is often overlooked during conversions.

Hope this helps.

No way! I've been hunting for a USED one, thinking Nissan wouldn't have them new anymore... but like everything, it's prolly a Bosch switch eh?

Cheers!

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
