Hi all,

It's been about a month since I bought my skyline and as I went to get my pink slip at Kmart Auto, I was expecting to hear see that everything was in order when the guy told me that my tyres were worn to "less than legal limit".

The tyres I'm using atm are 225/45R17. He showed me the replacements and they're $454 a pop for bridgestones!! Multiply that by 4 and it's about $1800 :) I wasn't expecting tyres to be that expensive so I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get new tyres fitted (and what brand) cheaper from - I mean that's more expensive than a new wheel and tyre combo..

Cheers

AF

thats a fair amount of money for each tyre, for that much i would expect top of the range bridgestones, i think you should shop around, and u will find average tyres for around 250 and very good tyres from about 330 each.

read the thread in the suspension forum about tyres (sticky thread) and u will see what others use and have paid.

ya can go for cheaper ones like i had to do, cause of lack of money, and they still do a good decent job. the only place they are lacking is if ya wana do some real speeds and push the car alot.

i just bought new tyers yesterday from a cheaper place.. couldnt afford expencive ones.. but yer, i got Nackang Ultra Sport NS-II 255/40/17 rear for $170 and 235/45/17 front for $120 ... they grip a crap load better then what i had b4. i can actualy let my right foot drop (not heaps fast) in first and it doesnt spin the wheels.. b4 i had to take it quite easy or it would spin and kick out to the left or right.. (195rwkw) oh well

oh yeh, got the tyers from a place in granville called "7 Day Tyer/Wheel" $580 for all the tyers.

Damn thats expensive!

As some of the guys have said, try out some places like Tempe Tyres and the like who are more used to dealing with people like us, and generally will give you a much better price then shit places like Kmart.

Also, try going up to a 235/45/17 as I was told by the guys I take mine to that its a much more common size in 17s and just about everyone makes one so they're much cheaper.

Up here in Newcastle I go to the boys at Wareners Bay Tyrepower (**SPAM** ), and I got my fronts back in August for $170 each fitted.

They're Kumho 712s in a 235/45/17 and they still look brand new now and I drive a damn lot.

That and my rears are about 6 months older and even with all the stupid driving I do, you can't even tell theres wear on em.

But yeah, shop around. Find a tyre your happy with and get many many prices.

check the "tyres you have used" thread in the "Suspension, braking and tyres" section.

bottom line is you mostly get what you pay for but there are some better "bang for your bucks" options out there. i'm very happy with my bridgestone S-03s but yeah they cost. people seem to like hankooks and maxxis in the cheaper tyres but be very careful you're getting the top model for each brand, even bridgestone, michelin, yokohama etc make sh*tty tyres.

and do not ever go to k-mart auto, i had a very bad experience there once with them trying to massively rip off a friend of mine. find a good mechanic and stick with him/her!

...end of rant :D

    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
    • You think its the AFM? I know its a common issues on R32s. I find it coincidental how this issue raised right after cleaning the fuel system. As everything except the fuel system was fine before. I tried running it with the IACV unplugged but did not notice a difference and still stalled. However, the RPM gauge is not in the cluster right now, so I will need to connect the laptop again and use Nistune to check the RPM. I will check this weekend.
