Widest Legal Rim Size For Vicroads

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been posted before.

But does anyone know what the widest legal wheel and tyre size is for an R33 GTST?

I've looked up vic roads, and as confusing as it is something about 25mm from the stock wheel on the model, but i've been told it can be any model variation of the car so does this mean 25mm ontop of the GTR wheels sizes?

Thanks

there's a heap of rules with wheel sizes, but from what i learnt when speaking to vic roads (not for skyline however) its on the largest factory option.

Now, with the fords, eg, the AU series, they used to include the XR's. so basically, XRs had the 17" option from factory, so that meant the standard falcons with 15 or 16 inch rims could use the XR spec largest option and get bigger wheels that way.

not sure if they do it the same way for 33 GTS-T/GTR, but they could probably tell you that 1 if you rang and asked it specifically

Dont ask vicroads, they know shit, well if you talk to 5 people you will most likely get 5 different answers. In regards to wheel sizes. You may not go more than 1 inch (25mm) wider and no more than 15mm bigger in total rolling diameter. So in regards, if you look at the fords as dezz made an example of. Im sure the standard falcon with 16's or 15's (shrugs) has higher wall tyres than the xr's to keep the same rolling diameter. But i could be wrong, dunno for sure.

Ring up an engineer, and he will explain to you that you cannot change the trackwidth of the tyres.

Thats about it. Good luck

yeah, most people think that the rule is 2 inches bigger (diameter) than the largest factory option, but the guy i spoke to at vic roads gave me the detailed rules, and its all about maintaing the same rolling diameter (or staying within the limit which is like 15mm as james said)

thats why you have to lower your tyre profile the bigger your rims are...

well the tyre profile, 225 + 15 = 240, whats the gtr wheel sizes ??? u would get away going on the gtr tread sizes

Coupe this - that's not how profiles work

so what then is the max tyre profile? 225?

Jive - that's the width...

I don't get what either of you are talking about.

profile is a percentage of the tyre witdh:

eg. 225/50/16 will give a sidewall height of 50% of 225 = 112.5mm

and if (for arguments sake) a tyre size is:

385/35/18, the sidewall height is 35% of 385 = 135.75mm

Therefore, "low profile" does not always equal skinny side walls.

Example:

stock skyline R33 gtst tyre size is 205/50/16 (by memory)

therefore total rolling diameter is:

16" ----> 406.4mm

add sidewalls (two sidewalls) = 2 x 205 x 50% = 205mm

equals 611.4mm.

if then you go to an 18" wheel, you will have to drop the profile to match the rolling diameter, working backwards

say we want to fit a 235 width tyre:

18" ----> 457.2mm

therefore the sidewalls must be 611.4 - 457.2 = 154.2

therefore each sidewall is 77.1mm

as 77.1mm is a percentage of the width, the profile is 77.1/(tyre width)

profile = 77.1/235 = 32.81%

However, as tyre profiles are in 5% increments, you must use a 35 profile.

As a 235 doesn't come widely in a 35, the fitment is a 40 profile.

i remember trying to get road worth for my car and one guy wouldnt give it to me cause my rears were too wide, though when i went to another guy he didnt even mention it and still gave me roadworthy so ye its always a different answer

Widest legal rim is largest factory rim width plus 1 inch.

You can go as large in diameter as you want, as long as the overall diameter of the wheel and tyre doesnt change by 15mm or something, cant remember exactly.

Look it up on the vicroads website

    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
