My clutch was starting to slip,

so i went out and bought a new PBR Heavy Duty Clutch kit for my 94 R33 GTS-t

Went and got the new clutch kit put in (New Presure plate, clutch plate and release Bearing)

Went to go pick it up, put my foot on the clutch pedal and it stuck down the bottom with very very little effort to push it down.

After a few adjustments its was able to spring back, but was still sh|t house.

Took it for a test drive and it was slipping and messy to change, the clutch pedal was WAY to soft and sticky.

Then they told me my Master clutch cylinder was starting to sweat and show signs of leaking.

So i imported (through nissan from japan) new genuine Master and Slave Clutch Cylinders.

Got them installed, bled and refilled the clutch fluid.

It now slips in every gear as soon as it come on boost, not even thrashing.

half throttle and comming on boost it slips to sh|t.

Stock boost.

First thing that comes to mind, the install was sh|t and may not have been done properly. <_<

Second, the clutch kit may be stuffed ?

Any other thoughts ??? for when i take it back to get it fix ?

Kind Regards

Steve

I just recently got a new clutch installed, however i was going to purchase a PBR clutch kit and the place who installed mine adviced not to. They said nothing 'bad' about PBR but they gave me a very confused look when i requested a PBR kit (my uncle told me they were good, though he works with holdens and fords).. so i asked what was wrong with PBR clutchs and they said they prefer excede because they deal 'more' with high performance cars.

So my suggestion is the clutch is probably not suited and doesn't have a large enough pressure plate to cope with the power of your stockish r33 gtst. Go to another place and ask them what they think it is, and as someone else said, ask them for an explaination as to whats wrong with it, as they should have test drove it, if they cannot give it.. ask for a refund on all labour.

Well i got it checked out today,

and here is the verdict. well there are 2 issues.

1. PBR dont make a "Heavy Duty" clutch, its a stock clutch kit for R33's but it says its heavy duty (Faulse Advertising, seemings its written on the box it comes in)

I found this out by ringing them today, it is recommended for Non turbo's, so they say.

These are the PBR Presure plate and Clutch plate

2. The Master Clutch cylinder was over adjusted thus putting way to much pressure on the clutch, not letting it fully release therefore it was slipping all the time. (it was as if you were driving with your foot on the clutch, enough to make it slip all the time)

So the clutch managed to "GLAZE" its self, this means it got that hot it turned blue, causing it to glaze. Therefore when the car came on boost even the slightest, it cant engage properly, and slips and slips and slips.

So i recommend not to go "PBR" if you have a performance car.

Im now getting a new performance clutch, probably "Exedy" or something simular.

So now i should be able to enjoy my car properly, with a PROPER heavy duty performance clutch.

Hope this can provide some info on Clutches if you need to replace it.

PBR = NO (unless you want to, or have heard different, or they make a better clutch)

The PBR clutch kit i got retailed for $550 (i didnt pay that but yeah)

So hopefully this week i can get a new clutch kit and all is well.

I will keep you posted.

Kind Regards

Steve

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them?
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
