    Drift Night!

it will be my first time too. people coming to watch a drift "practice" shouldn't be expecting too much, and I'm sure they're all just friends of people having a go on the night. so there's no real pressure.
  2. funny, my times seem to have been removed... persona non grata, eh?
  3. not sure its worth anything, but its always nice to know the service history and that the mileage is genuine.

    Drift Night!

couple more questions - is it just one car at a time? enter on the night?

    Drift Night!

can you take a passenger on the track with you?
  7. he's probably right. a 255/45*17 will be about an inch larger in diametre than a 255/40*17. The 255/40 is about the right diametre for an R32 GTR. yes, offset of the wheel is the distance from the centre of the wheel to the mounting face at the hub. bit of a recent discussion about offsets on R32 GTR here
  8. I've got 255/40*17 on 9.5" wheels with no scrubbing. 45s will be a bit on the tall side...
  9. SE QLD is on level 5 water restrictions. We're not allowed to wash our cars at home. Only allowed to clean the windscreen and mirrors, and spot clean bird/bat poo off the paintwork. I've seen a mate take his Pajero through an automatic drive-thru carwash and it didn't even get the bird poo off it... came out not much better than it went in. Do it at one of the self serve carwash bay places.
  10. they use the AASA license you can get on the day. and they have a group for first timers, so its all good.
  11. QR also run wednesday and saturday afternoon sprints. its only $90 prepaid, and plenty of track time. QR calendar sprints entry
  12. hmm, thought you just said a basic GTR would struggle to get near the times of an EVO 9 on semi slicks with a re-tune and turbo back exhaust? guess I misunderstood what you meant by that... and you also asked how many of the quick GTRs are still using the std engine, gearbox, brakes, diffs, turbos and shocks/springs... sounded like you were implying that some other more modern quick cars were still running std everything unlike the quick GTRs? I compared my times to other more newer cars in a similar state of tune to mine for comparison (ie very nearly standard - exhaust, springs and shocks), and a number of much more modified ones. I only mentioned standard cars down south because that seemed to be what you were talking about. but I am easily confused!
  13. I didn't take it as an attack, if that comment was directed at me? But I thought we were talking about wether GTRs were being outclassed on the track by later model awd cars, not wondering why unmaintained shitboxes aren't much chop on the track. I'm just saying my very standard R32 GTR keeps up with the newer crop without any real trouble, or fancy suspension setups. Nothing wrong with the R32's attessa system in my veiw (not for near standard car's power levels anyway). But I am used to racing/rallying rwd cars. there's no doubt in my mind that an R32 GTR is still easily capable of embarassing much newer EVOs and STi's on the track. I don't think that comparing your tyre temps to other cars tyre temps really tells you anything about the relative performance of the 2 cars. Let the stopwatch take care of that.
  14. what quick cars of any make still use the "std engine, gearbox, brakes, diffs, turbos and shocks/springs"? Not many! My GTR has std engine, gearbox, brakes, diffs, turbos, but not shocks and springs, running on the standard wheels with standard size 225/50*16 RE55S semi slicks it ran 46.2 at Mt Cotton in full street trim, and without so much as any camber correction. That's fast enough for the record in both Road Registered and Improved Production over 3L classes if they let it run in either of those categories. Not exactly past its use by date. In the AWD Turbo class and it always ran second to an uber-modified WRX that runs on wet compound tyres and only ever runs at the hill. Much newer STi's and EVOs in similar state of tune seem to do 49s... There's plenty of highly modified modern WRXs STi's and EVOs that can't match my very near standard 1989 GTR's times. its also got a 3rd outright and 1st in class at the '05 Bathurst Speed Weekend Mountain Straight Hillclimb on the RE55S, and 3rd outright on the special tests of the QLD Challenge Road Rally while running on Federal Road tyres. If GTR's are underperforming against standard newer EVOs and STi's down south, don't blame the hardware.
  15. a total of 3 sessions over 2 days? or do you mean 3 sessions each day?
  16. I've used the RE55S in monsoonal conditions at Mt Cotton hillclimb and found them excellent even in standing (and running!) water. but they were brand new full tread depth and QLD summer temps, so i guess its no real comparison to day 5 of Targa and temperatures in Tassie in Autumn. I've always wanted to do targa, so it's very interesting to read about the event from a competitors perspective. And get the low down on tyres too. Well done to all who competed
  17. yep. the other problem is the 595RS costs as much as a genuine semi slick. I've used 595SS as a street tyre (back then I had a second set of wheels and RE55S for track use), and when I got my new wheels I was considering the 595RS as a dual purpose tyre, but changed my mind as soon as I saw the price. It was double the cost of the same size 595SS, and right up there with genuine semi slicks. I don't see the value in the 595RS. Since I wrote the review in the tyre thread I've been back to QR on the 595SS and was alot less impressed. It was a warmer day and they were just mush after the warm up lap, sliding around all over the place. Still a very good street performer (where overheating the tyres isn't an issue) and great value for money, unlike the RS.
  18. can't take credit for finding that article - its stickied here in the suspension section. just seemed relevant to link into this thread. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=161623
  19. for those of us who don't know all that much about shocks (me included) this article might help explain a few things: http://www.wincom.net/trog/autocross_secrets6.html actually the whole Autocross to Win article is well worth a read. Just remember that they're talking about lower speed events than race tracks with alot of rapid changes of direction.
  20. the Aus spec Teins seem pretty good. 11th outright in Targa Tasmanina last year from a rookie in a R34GTR that was only just completed in time for the event. No lack of serious competition there. Fulcrum Suspension, the Aus distributor will be able to advise on spring rates for anyone with more track oriented vehicles. The guy who did their development on the Aus spec Teins is a very good shock man and has worked wonders on some of the fastest open wheel hillclimbers (Formula Libre) in the country. I'm sure the Bilstein group buy stuff is good too, but it looks more street oriented. Lets face it, 99% of the time you're on the street anyway. My Buddy Club coilovered R32 GTR won its class and got 3rd outright on the Mountain Straight Hillclimb in 2005's Bathurst Speed Weekend, and won its class in the 2 rounds of the 2006 Tighe Cams Mt Cotton Hillclimb Series I contested. Doesn't mean it had a good suspension setup - it didn't! And I wouldn't recommend them to anyone - crazy bump rates on these shocks!
  21. the pics are still in the page linked link at the top of his post. you just need to figure out which one he's referring to in the description, which is pretty straightforward. I know its a year old now and he may not see this, but good job on the write-up lwells.
  22. I'd be interested to hear what ride height and camber you guys run on the rear to have trouble with those fitments. mine has 1.5 deg static rear camber, 17*9.5 +17 255/40 tyres and no clearance issues at all. I'll have to check my ride height. I have a fair amount of travel in my setup, with Buddy Club coilovers that are heavily shocked but quite softly sprung, and use standard swaybars. Result is quite a bit of lean by mid corner - I have some photos at home that show how much body roll it gets. I've also had 17*9 +15 on the rear with 245/45 and no clearance problems either. I used to have a set of standard GTR wheels 16*8" +30, which I ran semi slicks on. Have you seen how far inside the wheelarches they sit? they make the gaurds look cavernous! I sold them to a mate with a S15 so I could get some wheels/tyres to take advantage of those huge wheelarches. 9.5" +17 sit about 32mm further outward and 6mm further inward than the standard wheel. 9.5" +22 would be 27mm further out and 11 further in than stock wheels. This puts the outer edge of the rim in the same spot as my old 17*9 +15. 9.5" +28 is obviously 21mm further out and 17mm further in than stock. This puts the outside edge roughly equal to both Beer Baron and djr81's 9" wheels give or take a mm each way. so if you want extra clearance on the outside than those guys with a 9.5" wheel, you will need the +34 offset, which will give you that 6mm(+/-1mm) more clearance to the outer gaurd than Beer Baron and djr81, but the inside edge will be 23mm further in than a standard wheel & roughly 20mm further in than Beer Baron and djr81's 9" wheels Its also worth noting that none of us have front clearance issues at all because of the camber we run, but there may be issues for a road car without camber correction depending on the rideheight and how much travel in your setup. that should give you some info to make you're choice on (if it makes sense to read that is!)
  23. i run 17*9.5 +17 with 255/40 tyres. no issues with standard R32 GTR bodywork, but I do have about 3deg front static camber. Its also the Work wheel's recommended offset for BNR32 in 9.5" width. A +28 will be 11mm further inwards and may look a little underdone. I'd go +22 out of those available in your first post
  24. PICS ADDED plenty of life left in the rubber Ian
