Opinions Welcomed On Track Car
JAGR33 replied to garage5ran's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
I'm a little confused here, in one post you say 'For sure one with more mods will but from most of the cars ive seen at these days sport RE555's and bolt-ons.... ooh and big ego's.' Then you say 'i dare use the word again "MOST" GTR's i see at these track days would find a modded late model EVO tuff to compete with can someone give me the quickest times at recent track days?' So which days do you go to where there are GTR's that sport re55's and big egos?? Don't they do lap times at these events?? Why do you want the quickest lap times in recent events, I can assure you they ain't the 'MOST' GTR's your talking about. Don't take this the wrong way but by reading your comments it seems like your highly involved in motorsport (circuit), your in the import scene and your from Melbourne, if you don't know what times the GTR's are lapping these days at the major tracks well then something is wrong. As I stated before, which days do you go to? It may give me more options for me to attend... I guess the main reason some of the people in this thread are a bit harsh on words is that you've made a bold statement, without anything to back it up. P.S No hard feelings.... -
Yep, just Sunday.. Forecast is for 38 degrees.. Although the sea breeze might make it a little cooler...I hope...
-
You can do it Troy, I'm giving you the confidence you need!!!!
-
I'll be at PI this Sunday for the PIARC day, chasing 1:47's... Roy - If you get a 1:51 I'll buy you 2 kegs.... On a serious note, a lot of time can be made at turn 1, hayshed, and coming onto the front straight. Hold it flat through those corners and you will be on the money!!!! In saying that 1:53's is achievable, it just depends on whether your foot listens to your brain, if the brain says back off, DON'T!!!

Damn, looks like I missed out on a trophy.. I'm pretty sure I got a couple second places, oh well, looks like I have to go faster than Aaron...

That's a pretty gutsy statement, what sort of times has this car done on the circuit?? -
I've got some footage of that f40, and the f50 that was there.. I might head down for a look since its a 5 min drive from my place...

Geoff, I totally agree with what your saying in regards to big brakes are not essential, but the issue here is that we're talking about street registered GTR's that see the track. Its all good not having big brakes on a car that weighs 1000kg, add another 600kg's and the brakes will definetly not perform as good. Improved production cars are race cars, we're talking about GTR's that are driven on the street and taken to the track. I refuse to rape my car in regards stripping out interior and setting it up as a full blown race car, what's the fun in that?? I want to enjoy my car on the street, that's the difference. Surely I could strip it, put a cage in it, carbon fibre doors, full slicks and wind up the boost with race fuel to give me over 400rwkws, the times will drop dramatically, but I can't see myself looking at it in the garage on a fine sunday morning thinking it would be nice to take it for a spin through the hills, when obviously I couldn't.. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the discussion here is based on street registered GTR's, not race cars competing in a race series.. -
What brakes you running?? Weren't hapy with the AP's???

Troy - 1:18.70, your pretty much on the money, people forget how heavy the GTR is, so pulling up a car so heavy needs decent brakes. Geoff - you do have a point to an extent, but good pads and fluid don't cut it with the power our cars are running. In a GTS-T with mild power maybe yes, if I went with your recommendation I'd be lucky to do 2 laps without ending up in the rough, and also the braking performance is not the same.. e.g at Calder I reach around 250km/h on the straight, hit the brakes at the 200m mark to take turn 1 at about 70km/h. I'll find it very hard to believe the standard calipers would match this performance, using the same car... I agree, higher corner speeds means less use of the brakes, but our cars need the bigger brakes to wash off speed before tight corners (e.g turn 1 @ Calder). Another good example is Chris (Scotsman) still runs the standard calipers all round, but with the best rotors/pads/fluid, he seems to be doing fine although he's power is around the 270rwkw mark. Add another 100rwkw and watch those brakes melt after a couple laps... Tracks such as Calder and Winton are very hard on brakes, my car has never even hinted any sign of fade or braking performance, even after 4 laps.... -
Oh well, we have the PIARC Sprints on the 18th Feb (95db noise limit!!), and the WRX Sprints on the 31st March, both at PI!!! Can't wait, you going?? Sorry for being off topic....

You mean the silver 34, clayton's one?? Yep I was there that day, got away with murder, the damage was minimal considering what happened. That was due to oversteer and lack of control, but I do see your point. A firm example of this would be Snowman's car, huge AP's with 375mm rotors up front, standard calipers rear. I'm not sure if he runs a brake bias controller but you'd think it would be seriously unbalanced. Every time I've asked him he seems to think it works well. Hopefuly he can shed some light and see what he's experiences with such setup is like... And Geoff, you've hit the nail on the head in regards to the use of a brake bias controller in this situation... -

Very well said Neil, I was one of the GTR's from Vic, but unfortunately couldn't make Wakefield, went to EC instead. Since I've never been to Wakefield I'm assuming the kink you're referring to is the one on the front straight leading into turn 1. After looking at some incar vids and speaking to a few other Vic guys that attended, it seems like that kink is pretty close to turn 1, so its hard to maintain speed through there without unsettling the car at the same time wash off speed for turn 1. In other words your braking while turning. Is this correct?? Sounds like the perfect section of track to determine how well balanced the cars brakes are, as turning and braking don't go hand in hand, this where trail braking comes into play... Have you noticed any GTR's doing the same thing at any of the other tracks?? From memory there was one corner at EC where it goes slightly right before a left hander (turn 6?) before corporate hill, and also the second last corner has a slight right before left, under brakes.. Here's some footage of myself, you can see which corners I'm talking about So I guess the problem of the car getting 'taily' gets worse when braking and turning at the same time... P.S Sorry for long post... -

Which car are you talking about Geoff?? I s it Snowy?? Besides, Justin is going for a front AND rear package, well balanced... -
It also says that there will be 3 sessions for the sprints... What a bummer, unfortunately I can't see my self paying $265 to do 3 sessions... I'm out...
-
cazz - so basically if I was interested in competing in the sprints, it would cost me $75 for entry, and another $190 to compete in the sprints??

Does that mean all GTR's are like that?? The cars I mentioned earlier have no such problems... We even run ABS aswell.. The cars you mention at Wakefield, did they have aftermarket brakes??? If they were a bit taily then an easy fix would be to use a more aggressive pad in the rear to even it out.. Don't see the point in spending all that money in brake bias controllers and aftermarket pedals.... Don't take this the wrong way, this is not a shit fight. Just voicing my opinion on experience... -
No, I definetly wasn't racing at this event... Also want to mention that Drew and Georgie Jorgensen managed to come 5th outright in this event in their Race Pace prepped R32GTR. WELL DONE GUYS!!! That's not a bad effort considering some of the drivers and cars competing in the event, well driven in the poor conditions... Results are here: http://www.lakemountainsprint.com/results.html There are also some in car vids on youtube of the 32GTR in action.. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=89gtr

Funny you say that Neil, there are about 5 hardcore track GTR's down here in Melb, all of them have aftermarket brakes, none have a brake bias controller.... -
Here's a quick vid on how good/bad the conditions were on the night...
