That's kind of the point isn't it? If you're (the non specific your're, you're not a total wanker) going to be a wanker and crap on about wine and VMs why not just install Windows on a primary machine in the first place? If you really want to run that 'killer app' in linux/unix that doesn't take much resources anyway just do it in a VM or on a spare machine that can't cut it anymore but can run a bit of freeware goodness. Linux is fine just don't shit in my hand and call it an easter egg.

Well my Windows machine does more than my Linux machine ever did and that includes multimedia type stuff and there are alternative programs for everything on Windows and if there isn't you can just run Linux within a virtual machine (VMware, virtualbox etc etc) + also at least with Windows you can choose what type of system you have and what it does and not just install Ubuntu and have to install 7000 packages to get it doing anything usefull.
