  1. Pic: The relay box. You can see 2 relays, 2 fuse holders, and lots of new wire. Notice where the 2 fuse holders get their power from - it's a perfect fit for a blade crimp :-) The wires attached to the fuse holders are 30 amps, so be careful when crimping the ends on. You should also be able to see that the terminals on the relay are perfect fits for the crimps as well :-) No need for relay holders :-) That extra blade joiner you see is from sheer laziness. Basically I ran the ground from each relay to this joiner. Then after that, I only needed to join one wire to a ground point (i.e. the black wire coming out of the head lights) :-) PIC: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/at...ntid=4986&stc=1
  2. Pic: Left light. Note there are 3 joiners here. This is where I found my ground for the relays (hence the extra wire / joiner). You can see the wire from the right light passing by too :-) PIC: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/at...ntid=4985&stc=1
  3. Pic: The new wire going along the front of the car. Mostly out of sight. PIC: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/at...ntid=4984&stc=1
  4. Pic: The right-hand headlight. 2 joiners - 1 for each wire. PIC: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/at...ntid=4983&stc=1
  5. Pic: A bag of joiners and crimps. They're pretty cheap from Dick smith :-) PIC: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/at...ntid=4982&stc=1
  6. Ok. As promised. Some pics and stuff Anyway, as GTS 33 said, you want some 5A blade fuses (get more than 2, in case you blow them - like me), a bunch of insulated female blade crimps (just get a box of 10), a couple of those blade joiners (just get a bag of 10 from Dick Smith), 2 car horn relays, some trusty cable ties, and a couple of meters of wire. I found some 2-core wire at Dick Smith and used that instead of 4 cored wire... I find it a little more managable. Also, the relays have the terminal numbers printed on them. On my car, behind the headlight assembly there were 3 wires. Black (ground), red (high beam), and green (low beam). My new wire was nice and simple red and black stuff. So I decided to make red low beam and black high beam (heh, the opposite of what's in the car). You car may use different colours though. Here's how you want to wire it: Red (high beam) -> Relay terminal 86 Green (low beam) -> Relay terminal 87 12v source -> Fuse holder -> Relay terminal 30 Ground -> Relay terminal 85 If you got 5 terminal relays (like me), make sure you cover terminal 87a with a blank crimp. You don't want any possibility of shorts. If you look at my pic of the relay box, I found a 12v source near where those funny fuses are. You can also use a lug crimp to go directly to those 2 beefy 12v bolts on the right-side of the box. The ground was a little more tricky. You can in theory run it to anywhere on the car body, but I couldn't find anywhere to attach it. So I ran another wire and joined it to the ground (black wire) of the left head light assembly. Once it's wired up, here's how it's meant to work... - High beam goes on. Low beam goes off. - High beam sends 12v up to the relay's coil. The relay clicks closed. - 12v goes from the power source through the closed relay terminals and out the wire to the low beam - Low beam goes on - When the high beam is turned off, the coil de-energises and the relay opens. The lights then function as normal. Pic: blade joiner and a crimp. Notice the insulation on the crimp, and the blade + cover on the joiner. After you put the wires in the blade joiner, the blade must be fully pushed in so that the cover can close firmly. If it's not in far enough, this mod won't work (as I found out). 7. I found that the idea is really simple, ONCE you work it out in your minds eye on how it's supposed to work. But until that happened with me, it was as confusing as hell... I'm going home to bathurst in a few minutes, so I'll borrow my old man's digi-camera, take a few happy snaps and write up a little something for you guys... After a few laps of the mount though
  8. Interesting... How much do they cost generally.. I've been wanting too do this sort of thing, but I can't find an area to practice in (and no, I don't do this sort of thing on the road).
  9. Heh, this mod is cool :-) Looks much better now all my lights come on with high beam :-) And now I can point the high-beams further up so I can see further along the road and see what's close at the same time :-) Oh, and you can get those in-line joiners at Dick Smith powerhouse, or I found some at Auto-1 in kensington.
  10. I drove a VW beetle. I had my silvers before I was 18. but the RTA lady said I had to have P plates on my car until I turned 18. So I wore them for my trip home, but somehow they "flew" off my car after I got out of sight of the RTA. I used to drive my parents V6 magna a fair bit, which I thought was a gutsy car... Until I drove a skyline for the first time.
  11. Secoh - So it's now legal to have a pod filter in NSW? When was that changed?
  12. All skylines have some form of LSD tho, don't they?
  13. Has anyone tried to make a claim through Famous? I heard on the SilviaNSW forum that it took ages to go through and that aspect of the service was a little difficult.. I'm currently with Just Cars (and was raped) and if these guys are all right, then I'll be moving to them. Speaking of getting raped - I gotta pay some tax. Being a contracter sux sometimes.
  14. 1 word - Insurance. If you want full comprehensive insurance, I hope you have a fat wallet that doesn't mind being totally emptied. Male (I assume with a name like Dave) + <25 + Import + Turbo = I can't comment on much, but when I was in a 180 ('89 ca18det), it felt quite sporty with the turbo coming on pretty hard. But my skyline (r33) feels a lot smoother and refined. I'm sure the other guys can give reasons for this (such as engine sizes, etc) Your best bet would be to take 1 of each for a spin and feel the differences for yourself. Maybe some Melbourne owners will give you a ride in theirs to get a feel of what the cars are like, and what various mods can do.
  15. I think I read in another board (about Aus-spec GT-R's) that the imports have all 4 lights coming on, but the local brew only have 2. I don't know if this is right or not, but you may want to have a look... I think it was on the NSW board.
  16. Nizmo - you don't know what you're missing. Just think - if you get a VW like my old one, you don't have to worry about speeding fines on the open road
  17. My mate's 180 is the same. It feels faster than my stock r33, but isn't. My other mate Dave reckons the same thing when he drove a 180 and then got in with me. I suppose the 180 feels sportier but the skyline is more refined.
  18. '73 VW 1.5l Beetle - Body rusted so had to get rid of it. It was a pretty cool car - heaps of character. 105km/h was the highest speed I could coax it to. '83 KA 1.5l Laser - Had a manual choke. On a cold day if you timed accelerating and the choke properly, it felt like a turbo . The exhaust fell off once and all the sudden it felt like it was given wings. My bro wrote that one off. '86 N12 1.6l Pulsar - Involved in heaps of accidents. I thought it was ballsy compared to my sisters 1.5 version. Got some good 4 wheel sliding around the race course at Bathurst Then I test drove an r33 skyline. As soon as the turbo kicked in, I knew I had to have one. I've also driven V6 Magna (my old folks), several commies (including a supercharged calais), a datto (my bro's - had the shittiest brakes on the planet), an astra (even more ball-less than the VW), a shitty 80's magna, a forester, a celica, and a WRX (gimme a skyline any day of the week over a WRX ).
  19. Just get a pump. ~ $15 from a car shop. It'd be too much of a pain in the arse to change the gear oil without a pump.
  20. There should be 3 screws holding in the brake light bar. Undo them and the brake light slides out. I had a problem with mine. One of the components inside the bar had corroded away because of water getting in. So I had to crack it open and replace the part. Then lo and behold, it started working again :-)
  21. Bathurst... Heh, my home turf. You can't have very fun drives 'round the mount in daylight hours though. 2am with CB radios and an inspection lap (in both directions) and it can be quite interesting :-) But if the cops see a shit-load of skylines drive through town to the mount, rest assured they'll be camping in the usual places all night with their unwholesome radars.
  22. The left lane is the slow lane... So nobody wants to be in it.
  23. Got a couple of questions for you guys - What do you do with the old oil (gearbox and engine). Do you stick it in a bottle and chuck it, or pour it in the neighbours garden, or what? - Where can you get a hand-pump for changing the gearbox oil?
  24. CanberraR33 - My bro had one P plate fly off his car (fair enough, that happens when you're doing 150) but he got pulled over for it, fined, and lost some points.... Over 1 P plate missing. That really sucked.
