Hi r_speedfreak_r, the problem is not the groups on the day. I have lap data on most people already and the day is fully pre-planned. You are allocated a group and pit bay in advance. What we are discussing is how to break up the lap times for the web site. The classes to use to credit the top ten runners in each "class" etc. With FWD, I do have a few of those come out. Check out the hall of fame and you will see just about everything in there. http://www.timeattack.com.au/hall_of_fame.php Paul

Steak, mmm. I'm in !!!

Hey Guys. As maccattack said, I group everyone based on their lap times. If you are new and want to be in a slower group just let me know and its all good. All the guys who come out are really friendly and easy to talk too. No one gets embarressed or made fun of because of lap times. Encouragement and good advice is on offer. I personally have run heaps of track days but have only driven 4 laps on the Sprint and 4 on the clubman in TOTAL at QR. I have been hampered by endless car troubles. These are now almost sorted and I'll be checking myself into the newbie group and looking for advice from the likes of our Group 1 guys. Paul

That is the reason I have not implemented a class system yet. It gets really complex really fast. You guys have got a lot of good information above. Here is what I was originally thinking: The Cars: Anyone who meets the criteria can come and drive at track day. No mandating of modifications etc. I personally love seeing hardcore cars hitting the track and don't want to change that. At track day: The grouping system is that similar speed cars run together. This is for safety to minimise overtaking and to give you clear track ahead. I let guys run together if they want unless thei times vary too much. Top Ten Results: The top ten on the front page is the best of the best. I am leaning towards DOT approved tyres (ie no full slicks) The only problem is I don't have a record of tyres for any of the hundreds of lap records I now have. It would be unfair to scrap records of all those guys at this stage. Class Results: I want to add another page with the class results. That way each group of guys can be shown to have achieved in their category. This is important. I have looked at classes using engine capacity, but as Harry and Michael have said it gets complicated quickly as you soon need AWD / RWD / FWD etc. Brain Dump: 1. I don't want to stop anyone from running their car the way they want. We are about Time Attack, which means the best setup for the best lap in its purest form. 2. I don't want it to feel unfair between slicks / semi slicks / street rubber guys. I don't want to start a tyre war either. 3. Driver ability has a lot to do with the lap time. I have seen hundreds of cars and thousands of laps and the car alone does not make the lap time. Idea: I could make the classes based on the car type. GTS class, GTR class, WRX class, EVO class etc. That way the front page celebrates the achievements of our die hards but the classes show the achievements within a car type. The mods and tyre choice still push people to the top but thats the competitive nature of motorsport. Please keep the ideas and comments coming. I am in a hundred minds about this as you guys are. How to make it simple but fair. All systems have there pro's and con's. It comes down to what we want the top ten to mean and what each class should mean in our context. Paul

Hey Guys, I appreciate the various issues with the time attack results. My goal is to develop a set of "Classes" that are competed in. For the front page and top 10 is will be the best of the best. Maybe with some considerations. If you guys want to have a bash at helping me develop a fair class system, lets start a new thread. The I will create a new page on the web site for the "Class Top 10" in each class. Paul

lol, SAU Strippers night out. Will have to decline though.

Hi guys, great thread about track day. I want to answer the question about overtaking. The number one prioirty on the day is everyone's safety. So when someone is doing an overtake I would like to see the following: 1. Leading driver is aware of following car. i.e. Uses mirrors. 2. Following driver flashes head lights to indicate desire to overtake. 3. Leading driver indicates what side to overtake to following car. 4. Following car proceeds to overtake. 5. Leading car holds line and backs off to ensure overtake is finished before the next corner. One thing to be aware of is occasionally someone in front will be faster in the straight and slower through all the corners. The temptation is to shoot off down the straight and hold up the following car for another lap of corners. The better thing to do is to acknowledge the following car is quicker in corners and let it pass on the next straight. Generally everyone does the right thing and the days runs great. If someone doesn't do the right thing, it is usually because of enthusiasm and is not intentional. Don't get mad, have a polite word or get me to have a chat. With the grouping on the day, I have lap data on most drivers, so the sessions are organised by performance. Doing this reduces the difference between the cars and there is less overtaking. Our smaller numbers also makes for clearer track. Paul

Put me down as a 50/50 at this stage. -
r33 racer, your questions: Paul are all the times upto date? YES, you can now download all the lap times from the website http://www.timeattack.com.au/lap_times.php Also the top ten and the hall of fame have also been updated. Don't forget to also download the Temperatures for the day, I measure the air temp and road surface temp for those who have to know (or is that just me, lol) Do you run in the sprints or Top gear at QR? or anything else for that matter? NO, my car has been broken for over a year and a half now, although now that Mick from Signature has it, I am nearly back in the game. Hoping to put in a few laps on November 28. Also do you have a relative with your last name thats a mechanic and in their mid to late 40's or would you be by any chance? I am an Electronics Engineer (I built all the timing gear, the 4WD Controller in maccatacks car and some other projects coming soon). I don't know of any mechanic's with the surname Ruzic, or in fact anyone who isn't one of my cousins. lol. haha or am i way way off? Who were you thinking of ?? On the back straight speed issue, I agree that an extra 20km/h entry speed will not equal an extra 20km/h exit speed as aerodynamic drag is a cube law, and is definately a factor at 200km/h. I was trying to point out that the speed through turns 1 & 2 will have an effect on terminal speed. Engine tuning will also play a roll on how the car pulls out of turn 2 and accelerates down the back straight. The exit speed at turn 2 will determine if the gearing (rpm point) is in the sweet spot for acceleration as well (be on boost rather than spooling up as this delay would cost terminal km also). Paul
-
The terminal speed on the back straight will have a lot to do with the turn 1 and turn 2 speeds, especially the exit speed out of turn 2. If you can imagine a 20km/h variation out of those two corners then I can see it at the end of the back straight. Further commentary Col ??
-
Nice. I went to Mt.G yesterday for a shakedown run of my now running car. The boys were out in force. I think there was an accident or something as well.
-
Hey Col-GTSX, just to clarify, you are claiming those high speeds on the back straight on the National Circuit / Sprint circuit right. In which case I think the 200km/h + are probably correct. What do others get ? Survey.... My speed trap is on the front straight at the start/finish line. The usual speed around there is 170km/h with the more hardcore cars getting near and just over 200km/h. Paul Paul

That car still looks so cool. Seems like a top event.
