Magic1, I think what you said along these lines might have needed some qualification to stop squabbles, you put some mega buck ecu's in the same basket when you say; "....because the Wolf computer has far superior fuel management than any other compter full stop. " Instead I'd suggest that the Wolf ecu 'may' have some advantages in fuel control over similar priced ecu's. When it comes to the Motec's and others it isn't in the same league but, at the price no one expects it to be.

Nice car. Gus looked after that one very well. It's a nice quick car. Although I can't remember if he fitted a highflow turbo, if he didn't it won't have 400hp. Have fun with it.

getting the Rb20 r32 into 12's is fairly straight forward if you talk to the right people R32-gts has done it and it doesn't cost a great deal. Send him a PM.

He didn't say they know nothing. He implied they lacked some knowledge specific to the wolf ecu, when they wrote it up. Sydneykid, On the otherhand if he has the power he's got and he's got standard injectors, can we come up with a reason why it works. I'm not a regular customer of SST and I'm as skeptical as the next guy but, Magic1's car does do what he says it does and it has got standard injectors.

Gtr cam timing for mid range torque
rev210 replied to pnblight's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
who did you get the turbos from? I'll be going to the plex in the next month or so myself to see how the cams help out. -
Magic1 got 511rwhp at a dyno comp at the WA Salon, enough to win his class at the event. He wins a prize. He did it with an wolf and stock injectors. End of story really. His car is quite fast. A terminal of 120mph is not always going to correspond to a 'dyno' reading in shootout mode, due in a large part to the fact that a dyno cannot replicate the track environment or the odd bad day for a driver or a set of dirty plugs etc. His car has a engine setup that on paper should be able to produce 500 flywheel hp on a good day without too much fuss, can't see much controversy about that. The standard injector thing is interesting, there is a way of getting more fuel in to do the job (appart from fuel pressure) can anyone guess? Why people get worked up over dyno print outs beats me. The dyno is a great tuning tool, go in increase the power from where you started and your happy. Dyno sheets work better as toilet paper than something to compare my car with someone elses, I couldn't care less. However I'm often interested to hear about people having success in tuning their cars from a general veiw of engine characteristics that show up in the dyno's measurements.

Stock GTR times are of little interest to owners of these cars because most of us start changing things the momnet we get our mits on them. I know of one R32 with an exhaust (cat back) and restrictor removed otherwise factory that ran 12.2. No ecu remap or anything.

Tomei Poncams Installed ! Hmmm power...

I have noticed oil temps are slightly higher with the new cams (engine temp the same). I don't have an exhaust gas temp guage but, I assume the exhaust temp would be a little hotter? -

No spring issues. My engine was set to develop a nice fat power band up to 7500rpm. I had only the aftermarket exhaust cam and a factory spec inlet cam. -

On the lift side of things the HKS cams for the RB25det do go as high as 9mm of lift @ 264deg duration, at least on the exhaust side. I put one of these in the old R33 gtst. -

I'd expect a very large increas in power over that. The torque will up a great deal. -

Lukevl , what do you reckon of GTS-t VSPEC's cam choice? -

Dude thats very large duration. Have you got enough room in your exhaust pipe for all that gas? What rpm is your peak power being made at now? -
Stop all this crapping on about what you will or won't do over the quarter based on a dyno. Take it to the strip, till you do an actual 13 you can say nothing. Tell everyone you expect 14's so when you run 13's you can act pleased. My old R33 gtst ran low 13's with less work on horsepower output and more on maximising engine response, something a dyno doesn't show you. You may like to spend some time on traction issues too. You don't need that much power to run low 13's just good average power. I reckon if people like guessing about 1/4 mile times so much based on dynos someone should start taking bets. I think I'd do pretty good business as a bookie.

Paul, You don't have solid lifters so if it doesn't need head machining then it's too easy. Whats the lift and duration on those? Dave. -

lukevl, Good info mate. I must admit it's great having people in the camshaft biz on the forums. I did check the clearences on the new cam and it was within the factory range, so it's all good. The Tomei cams are finished very well indeed. By comparison they looked much better than the HKS 264 9mm lift cam I had purchased some time ago for the Rb25 powered R33 gtst. They appear to be a 'billet', whereas the HKS units looked to me like regrinds. There seems to be quite alot of people I have spoken to who have found the Tomei 260deg 9.15mm lift cams drop straight in without shims (the guys I spoke to measured the clearences to make sure too). On the other hand the HKS units even at 8.7mm lift have sometimes required slight head machining on supposedly "step 1's" with a nice compliment of shims. It seems the Tomei guys may have done a pretty good job of replicating the nissan ramps. Cheers Dave -

The extra exhaust noise is not that bad at all, lots more air going in and gas going out always makes a little more noise. At idle it growls with a little lump. At cruise there is very little difference if any. At decent throttle there is more induction noise and a louder deeper exhaust note, nothing over the top. -

The cam gears are a must have on a modified engine with these cams. (I have an R32 GTR). The reason for this is that every engine combo is different and depending on application the timing of the cams can be made to affect the engine performance greatly. The 260deg 9.15mm lift Poncams have been known to make more horsepower at 10deg advance for intake 8 advance for exhaust cam on a particular car/engine, with better all round characteristics. Doing the same on my car would not necessarily be as wise considering the smaller turbos (and turbines) I have and more restrictive exhaust setup. If you are serious about 'tuning' the car then the 'bolt on boy' approach must be thrown out. If you are a cheap arse and want to go without the adjustable cam gears you can. Take off the timing belt every time you want to change the cam shaft timing and dial it in with a large protractor. It's just much more time consuming to try out new cam timings then a simple losening of a few allen key bolts on adjustable gears. -

They don't say anything on the Tomei website about not checking the clearence. However the base circle is exactly the same as factory on these cams, so if you didn't need shims before you wont after installing the new Tomei Poncams. This is what they suggest by the 'no shims required'. I think in most cases if the camshaft has been worn you need to re-shim, for the worn camshaft. Put a new one in with the same base circle as factory new and it won't need any shims. Abo Bob, There is a slight lump on idle due to the overlap. Induction/exhaust noise is increased. Having said that a new ignition map will help. I have a factory ecu with a spare PFC Pro waiting to go in shortly. -
My old R33 gtst had a terminal speed of 106mph for it's low 13 pass. The GTiR's terminal speeds are lower but, due to the fantastic take off they cut low times. i have beaten one in an R33 gtst over the 1/4 but it took me out off line before I caught it and only just beat it by the end of the 1/4. In a rolling start you might head one off. On a standing start if you beat it then either the GTiR is rooted or the driver was missing some skill. In general a healthy GTiR with a little tweaking is more than a match for a mild gtst as a rule of thumb. There are always going to be 'clapped out' versions of cars getting around but, with a healthy example of both the odds are in favour of the GTiR every time.

R33 clutch fans Rb25 vs Rb26
rev210 replied to Mik's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
yes. Get rid of the factory fan, fit an electric thermo unit.
