  1. Without trying to sound like a smartass, you would be better off not buying that unit and saving your money, There is nothing wrong with Alpine, I am not bagging the product, just that for about a $1000 less you would still be getting a unit that uses exactly the same laser assembly, pre amp, amp, staging ouput and tuner parts. You just lose some of the wankier things a high end unit gets nowadays. And with an extra grand in the hand, the system would be much better overall. This extra money could also include some of the "hidden" costs. - decent cable kit for your amp - decent sub box - sound deadening - better installation ( after all it wont matter how good the gear if the install sux) my 2c
  2. This is a recipe for a good sounding easy to set up everday system. I have done over the years many cars like this, front and sub off the amp, rears off the deck. Here's a few tips - you wont get extra power from the deck for the rears simply by only running two speakers. The decks internal amps is not set up lie this. - High pass the front speakers to take the bass out of them. This will help to give more volume from the front, better sound quality and most likely reduce the resonant frequency inside the door which may reduce vibration ( rattles) in the doors - Low pass the sub. - Load the sub by facing away from the cabin. This way when seats are up/down you get the same bass. ( ever seen those cars when they open the boot boom, i got bass, close the boot nothing) loading is important Now if you want to do something a little different, take your 6x9's, a set of wire cutters and chop off the pig tail wire that runs to the tweeters. This will give you a cheap alternative to bying dedicated midranges. You will not gain any volume by this and it will sound dull in the back seat of the car, but really, screw the back seat, unless of course you spend a lot of time in it yourseld when the car is being driven around. You can also buy caps for the 6x9's to take a little bass out them. Cheers..
  3. I have not got Vaporate on my skyline, however, I personally know two people that have had this system fitted to their vehicles. person a - ef falcon 6 cyl - lotsa km's - pod filter and chip ( chiptorque) person b - vx commodore 6cyl - 20 odd thou km's completely standard Both people have told me that Vaporate has shown them an increase of performance and fuel economy and that it is a clear difference when driving the car. I havent seen any conclusive evidence in the form of dyno sheets etc, but both of these people are in the automotive industry and are in " the know" when it comes to aftermarket products. From what i have been told it is a small "collar" that is placed around the fuel injector nozzle to normalise tempretures in the tip of the fuel injector. It does not make the car run leaner it simply makes more of the fuel into vapour and thus increases the fuel air ratio. Now please before I get a million ( or maybe 1 or 2) questions let me just state clearly, I am not a mechanic, I am not an expert on this product, I am just going on what I have been told by others who I would consider as experts. I beleive that REPCO are the recommended sellers of Vaporate and any additional information of the product can be obtained through the REPCO store network.
  4. JimX: USD waveguides are a specialist speaker that use a 8' midrange and a compression tweeter fired through a horn. It sort of looks like something you find in high end home audio or PA type speakers. They are not an easy fit to a skyline, they require - the dash to be removed and remoulded inc mounting for tweeters - doors to be cut and then have reinforcing materials and sound deadening fitted - wiring and other electrical components within dash space to be relocated. They are what i would consider to be the best front stage speakers on the market. The horns when mounted are under the dash in front of you, the imaging and sound reproduction is in another class from conventional splits/ speakers. They are a little on the pricey side, the last set i had was $1780 US. But they are worth it. But to your original question of what speakers to go for in a $150- $200 budget. VDO have recently released a MPS1700 which is a 6.5" split. The retail of these is around the $150 mark. They are rated at 90 RMS and with some product testing i did recently they were able to cope with a this type of power quite easily from one of the old school soundstream reference amps I had laying around. For instalation you will need to make a MDF baffle for the front doors. In the cars that I have done lately, this has been a 12mm base plate with 2 x 12mm spacer rings mounted to it to bring the speaker forward so it sits under the door trim of the r33. Using flat speaker spacers can lead to an echo effect inside the door trim and make the vocals reproduction of the speaker sound very hollow. The tweeters were mounted as dash mounts on top of the corner of each side of the dash with the speaker cable for the tweeters going straight under the a piller trim. No cutting of metal or plastic was required at all. As far as sound quality goes, forget playing MP3's, the way MP3 compresses the sound some of the music is lost, the pioneer system of BMX ( bimetric eq) is ok, but will not restore the music to its original state. For sound quality stick to original cd recordings. For a sub go for a 12" with a matched box. To keep it safe stick with a sealed box as it will make the sub a little harder to destroy as you wont keep dropping below the resonant frequency of a ported box ( ie - no power handling issues) There was also somewhere here a mention of soundstream. Soundstream were awesome, about 10 years ago, infact the old reference amps I have i will not part with for any amount of money. But the new product has seen some issues with the manufacture moved from the us to asian factory's to reduce costs of the product. If you are looking at soundstream, I would suggest to go with the mid to high level product only. Cheers frx026
  5. So this is a non battery backup siren alarm, which would indicate that it is an entry level product (most higher models have battery backup sirens) Anyway my point is, will this alarm be enough for this vehicle in the following areas - ease of which the siren would be disabled - insurance company approval ( aust standards state battery back up siren) - does the alarm itself have all black wiring with no identifying marks To me it seems pointless installing a non battery backup siren. Especially if the car is stolen or a theft attempt is made as the insurance will mostl ikely be voided by the insurance companys.
  6. There are a lot of things that could cause this type of engine noise, it may be grounding or it may be a combination of things. Generally when engine noise is present and changes withs the revs it is a "radiated" noise being picked up by one or more of the amp wires. It could be that your rca's are picking up a noise from a cable, putting that noise to the amp, the amp transforms it to sound and you hear it through the speakers. We used to use a list that looked something like this when trying to eliminate engine noise. Just remember is it a case of trial and error. - make sure all earth points are clean and direct to chassis - earth cable is at least as thick as power cable being used for application - earth from engine to chassis is in good condition - earth from engine to battery is in good condition - earth from battery to chasis is in good condition - rca cables are not run along with power cable for amp - remote is seperate wire and not wire sometimes moulded with rca's - rca's do not interfere with or cross other looms within vehicle ( run external rca's to check) - check power difference from battery to amp in volts - test in line power filter on amp battery cable - test in line filter on rca cables ( both behind unit and at amp) - check that speaker terminals are not touching or shorted to chasis - if noise only when lights/ air con on etc check earthing for that accessory These are the most common things that I would suggest. They may work, they may not, it really is trial and error. From there you may have to look at Voltage/ charging stabiliers etc to help. Generally though as i am sure others will point out Engine noise is sue to a fault in the vehicle itself, The above measures are more of a "band aid" than a fix and to have the problem solved once and for all you would have to take your car to a skilled, and i mean this, SKILLED auto electrician to find the actual fault in the car. JB, Autobarn, Strathfield etc will most likely try the same things as listed in this post and they do not guarantee to fix engine noise or cover engine noise under warranty. I hope you find this helpful frx026
  7. Easy. Behind the unit. Wire 12v accessories (switched power) of the car to the Antenna turn on wire of the car. This time when you turn the key on your antenna will come up. Wiring information here. http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Nissan-Wiring.pdf or http://r33stereo.groovesystems.net/ Cheers frx026
  8. If you are still unsure of how to fix you problem, read this as i cant be bothered retyping my contribution. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...T&f=10&t=113589 any other questions PM me
  9. I repeat - BURSONS ARE ABOUT AS SMART AS A BOX OF HAMMERS. THEY ARE MORONS AND KNOW LITTLE ABOUT IMPORT CARS. Is that clear enough for you? I agree with you completely about people saving a few bucks and cutting corners. It usually ends in tears and the car turns to shit. I can assure you I do not regap old plugs and am nowhere close to ever being a tight ass. I have never cut corners on any car I have ever owned. And this car WILL be no exception. The reason for my original question was to confirm part number and the spark plug gap required. I know that you cannot regap ( or at least it is not recommended to regap them) so that was not my intent. I have read many posts on which spark plug gaps cars should run. I was not shunning advice from anyone. I wanted to hear from people that have had actual experience in this with iridium plugs. You should also understand that my comments about being smart ( or lack of) are not directed at you, they are directed at BURSONS. Notice I didnt say anything bad against Nissan either. Cheers frx026
  10. Lately the Car Audio industry has been filled with two major rumours doing the rounds. 1. Autobarn and Sony have stopped trade. Autobarn Australia will no longer sell Sony products. 2. Apline will leave it's independant dealer network and whore itself to JB Hifi. Of these two choices, one happened yesterday and is confirmed, the other will happen July 1st this year and is pending final confirmation. So my question is to the members of this forum, what other rumours are floating around out there about the future of car audio in Australia?
  11. I guess with the BW10000 alarm is manufactured cheap (cost inc gst $114.43 with siren) enough to get this done. From a costing point of view it is nothing special. And from an install point of view it might not be that special either. Beware of the backyarder.
  12. While this is a very technical discussion, and I do have to agree that using splitters is not ideal, I think we have all over looked one small factor. IT WONT MATTER. Yep, that's right. It wont matter one little bit. The quality of equipment needed and its associated price makes this argument pointless. Let me put it this way, go to a retailer, buy $1500- $2000 of equipment, instal rca splitters in the system and the equipment will not be of good enough quality to produce a level of sound quality that would represent an audible difference to the end user. In English - the gear would not be good enough to hear the difference On the other hand, spend $25k - $30k and you are starting to get into equipment that would be good enough to provide an oppurtunity to hear the difference. And as logic would have it, if you were to spend that amount of money you would be getting equipment that would not need splitters anyway. I guess at this point I should also provide an alternative, if you must use rca splitters and think they will effect your "sound quality" ( you wont hear it anyway) go out and waste, er spend you money on some crystal line drivers. They will take all the noise away.
  13. To get your dash fixed in Melbourne take the panel to The Dashboard Doctor 71 Sydney Rd Coburg 3058 (03) 9383 6861 Great standard of work and relatively quick turn around times.
  14. I am sure the other members are gonna bag me for this, but the two easiest ways i have found are - ockey straps, those stretchy straps used to tie down things. just mount the end using rubber insert p clamps, Repco should be able to supply all you need. Just mount the p clamps, then stretch the ockey strap from one clamp to another over the sub box. - velcro strips on the underside of the sub box, the velco will go on to the carpet of the boof, so long as the carpet does not slide around - ie you may have to glue the carpet to the timber spare wheel cover, the box wont move around much. Just remember not to leave bare wires in the boot when you do remove the sub box Bare wire are bad mmmkay...
  15. To Confirm in a r33 the door sensor pick up wire is the thin red wire in the drivers kickpanel. And as how that has been done, i have to repeat myself If you are looking to get it done fire a PM at CHRIS ROGERS, he is the man with the install contacts.
  16. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=106206 I couldnt be bothered tying it again, this is the std alarm/tt interface relay. Should do the trick
  17. from your profille it says you have a r33 , so i am going to base what i say on this. It sound like your car would be fairly easy to steal. Why? Well not because one door does not trigger the alarm. But becasue the original installer obviously had no idea what he was doing. The r33 use one wire to sense both doors opening, so having only one working means that installer - - did not have much skill - does not know skylines - has probably left the alarm box in your kick panel or just under the dash - was working to a price I think what you should do is have a look under your dash, drivers kickpanel to see if you can see the alarm, if you can, dont bother taking it back to your original installer, take it to someone who knows what the are doing and get the entire alarm relocated and rewired. Sure its extra money, but really from what you have said, it would most likely take less than 30 seconds to steal your car at the moment.
  18. BRANDS MEAN NOTHING You might as well ask how long is a peice of string. Personal opinions will vary that much that you will never really get a handle on what is good, but more what people have or people consider cool. Perhaps the question should be, what is the best head unit under $400 or something, then there are some parametres to guide peoples answers. It is about getting off the computer, going out the front door and visiting places to see what is around. Even within Australia, the national market prices will vary, availablity of equipment will vary, so shopping around in your area is essential. Perhaps the approach you could take is. Decide what type of system you want first. a - cool street system on a budget b - audiophile system with unlimited budget for choice a , the usuals, jb, strathfield, repco, etc will suffice, they have enough quality equipment to build a loud street system. For choice b, go to a boutique dealer, gcr, gl prosound, hypasound, etc, someone that does get in the higher models and things. Remember though no matter where you go that sales person is after your money, once you are out the door the dont care, as long as you pay, they just dont care. Also remember that a good install will dramatically add to the overall output/ quality of sound that you end up with, so paying a few extra dollars for a custom sub box or better cabling is money well spent. If after reading this you are still looking for a brand reccomendation then try these - Front speakers - USD WAVEGUIDES ( big $$, hard install, but worth it, nothing else comes close) - Rear speakers - who cares - you dont sit it the back of your own car - Unit - something with no built in amp, no mp3, multiple gold outputs and a brass chasis ( expect to pay $4000 or more) - Cables, - stinger, street wires, they are all made in the same factory, the thicker the better though is always the way to go - Amp - buy from the US. Go for something like new F NV stuff ( expect to pay $3000+ for a small amp) - Sub - Sunfire or the likes ( expect to pay $2500+) - Sub enclosure - custom - sound deadening - esssential - skilled installer - hard to find but not worth doing without As a side note to other posters, some of the brands you have listed, clarion, focal, boston, audiobarn are made in the same factory in china. If you get to go to one of these factorys, and beleive me i have been to many, they are simply awesome in the range of equipment they produce with essentially the same internals.
  19. (puzzled) I thought we had already answered this for you.. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=116801
  20. Auto Salon is dying, we all know that, we all saw it on the weekend, but why? Well, lets have a look at the CABIN group to find out why. CABIN could not give two %#%$'s about cars. They care about one thing. Exploiting teenagers to get financial gain. It was probably 2 years ago that Auto Salon peaked in Melbourne. The crowds, traders, cars and babes were plentiful and accessible. But in those two years, CABIN has made it go all horribly wrong and not lead the pack as it like to think, infact it has divided the pack. The divide sees the "elite" cars, the OSMAN"S wrx, the MCBETH Magna, the big dollar show cars into one section and the honest working class cars in the other section. Unfortunately these elite cars win most of the big awards time and time again, eliminating the desire of the honest joe to build a decent street car with a budget. So, with that in mind when you decide to attend the event, you car be sure of a few things, the increased entry fee for spectators, entrants, clubs and traders. ( yet the mecc does not charge more), and the appearance of what is now to be called teenage hoe bags. - Just as a side note, the young girl in promo girl is not a first, last year a commodore entrant under a multiclor tent had a young boy dressed a "genie" walking through the crowd on his own, The boy was apporximately 8-10 yrs, pants, no shirt and a genie hat. The boy and his parents were "escorted from the premises". It was sickening to see. Auto Salon used to have some sort of standards, whether it be for the cas or the promo staff, in fact for the girls they all used to be over 18 ( it was a condition of entry as a promotional person), this was changed a little while ago and as a friend (professional photographer) has told me, has left him with images of an event that he cannot use, sell, or distribute and is essentially a waste of time. Anyway, a little off topic, but lets have a look at the mechanics of the show, you pay, your car sits there, it is critisized by 15yr olds with no brains, it is touched (possibly damaged) by people with no respect for anything, and has been the trend in sydney anyway is stolen after the event. It never ceases to amaze me after 10 years of car shows that the "backyard expert" still knows nothing about everything. ( oh and they get charged for the sms to vote for your car they nothing about) Where is the motivation for the entrant to endure this type of treatment? there is none. So, where is the show scene going to now? Honestly, and this is only my beleif, it is going to on track events, drags drifting etc, you only need to look at the success of powercruise, easternats, gazzanats, targa etc to see there has been a shift away from the cabin money making machine back to the real driving and real pleasure and pride people have in thier cars. So am i sarcastic? possibly, but let auto salon close down, let that other melbourne import show "show off' close down, both are dead events and really no on e cares anymore. Perhaps SAU should put in some money and make its own on track national event series. My 2cents. frx026
  21. Mate, Give a PM to CHRIS ROGERS from this site. Chris is QLD based but has an excellent network of people around the country. Let him know I recommended him. As for the big decision Black Widow or Mongoose, both are very good, individual installers have their favorites, but when either alarm is installed CORRECTLY they are both effective. Whatever you do, DO NOT take your car to any AUTOBARN, JB HIFI or STRATHFIELD they will butcher your car and the alarm will not be any sort of deterant. Cheers FRX026
  22. Hi Smurf, Mercedes, porsches etc are nice and a lot of executives and things own one, where i work there are about a dozen or so combined in the car park, our CEO's car is a $400,000 Merc. Personally i dont like it. My Job is of National Sales Manager, my salary is 6 figure, my "company" car is a R33 series 2, I have had other cars yet always wanted a skyline. I find it to be a talking point within the business world and not a blocker to making contacts or making deals. I have had no problems with taking people to meetings or the like, so I would highly recommend following your desires and owning one rather than giving into the perceived "signs of success". Cheers frx026
  23. Could someone tell me is this on again on may 06 and if so is the location the same. Thanks
  24. While this is an interesting read. I think we should look at the main points and then facts, some are different. 1. hassling people for driving in a sensible manner is not helping this situation 2. Street racing is dangerous illegal and should not be tolerated. 3. burnouts in suburban streets etc should not be tolerated. 4. A minority of drivers have effected the situation of the majority of drivers or high performance cars 5. Organised events where cars are trailered there should be run in conjuction with the police 6. Car groups are against each other rather than fighting for one another ( in a legal way of course) Now the facts 1. Les and Reg the owners of springcars could not give 2 f**ks about people at the event, as long as the money comes through the gate 2. John Davison, after speaking to you at Easternats, i am convinced you know nothing of how you event is run, organised or marshalled, you know even less about the entrants and what they endure as soon as they get out the gate 3. Events such as powercruise, rev fest, gazzanats and summernats are set to gain popularity as people see them as safe events to go to. This is due to organisers, local government and police working TOGETHER to have a safe event and bring money into that community. 4. Police and authorities will never stop the modifying of cars or the illegal racing of cars unless they ban all cars and then one by one place them in a crusher and destroy them forever, then we would race push bikes. 5. Police and authorities would gain more respect by supporting off street racing, such as the drag safe program in victoria used to promote. So, what is the solution. Perhaps the governement needs to take a few more steps than the obvious to fix the problem of carnage and racing on the streets. So heres some of my ideas. Young driver training - Currently in vic passing a computer hazard test and a test of driving a mazda 121 at 50kph will get a pass for your license. - perhaps introduce as a requirement of getting your licence a defensive driving element on a skidpan to teach the dangers of cars, and to show how to correct from some basic situation. This is not a substitute for experience, but may help young drivers learn. Speed Cameras. - Currently in vic they are hidden behind bridges, signs etc. - perhaps if they were a true safety camera they would be painted bright green or something similar to a hi visibility vest ( safety vest) with warning signs placed that you are approaching a camera. This would make motorists slow down. I say this because currently i could today drive like and idiot doing double the speed limit past a camera, sure in two weeks i get a fine, but what if in that two weeks i had already crashed and killed somebody? the fine is useless, the camera is useless. - introduce better targeting of speed cameras, known accident spots, school zones etc. Why have spped cameras on the ring road or the geelong road, These roads are wide enough to land a 747 on and have great visibilty. Breath testing and drug testing - penalties should include having your car taken away for good. Off street meetings - police could support meetings such as calder wsid and the likes, instead of penalising the public for spectating, entering and trying to do the right thing by taking it off the street. Vehicle modifications. - perhaps the government could introduce a better system for having modifications done to a car, and then having a vicroads inspection and compliance for that modification. These are only some ideas. I have posted this as an intelligent discussion rather than some of the point less posts that appear on this topic. cheers frx026
