I have offered my tunning services to a good friend of mine, however I am not getting the results expected. Unfortunately the engine was not built very well, was returned for warranty rebuild once and has had many problems since. The car previously has the same HKS GT2835 turbo and made 200rwkw. It also made the same power with a RB25 turbo. I attemped to gain some more power by increasing the boost on the previous RB20 and it resulted in minimal improvement. So the choice to install the RB25/30 was chosen. Specs are: RB25 Head Rb20 Cams RB30 Block Unknown comp forged pistons HKS GT2835 STD manifold 3" exhaust Trust turn flow FMIC RB26 Apexi PFC RB20 loom So my experience so far is. -RB26 PFC is used on the RB20 loom and rewired to suit. I have corrected the Airflow correction and curve as the 'Shop' decided to just change the airflow correction to 50% as the GTR expects two air flow meters inputs. The output from the single VG30 AFM has been bridged into the PFC which is fine, However I modified the Air Flow Curve to actually represent the amount of air entering the engine as I like the A/F ratio on my Datalogit to reflect what it is in relality. So now the Air Flow correction is back to 100%. I have rescalled the Maps to 400-8000rpm instead of 800-9200rpm(GTR). Injectors are std RB25. Fuel pressure has be raised to emulate an output of ~444cc so injector correction remains at 100%. Injector lag has been changed to 0.04ms (diff between std GTR and RB25 injectors). -Tuning the AFR was resonably straight forward and 11.8-12.0AFR was acheived at full load and 14.7AFR at cruise. 0 boost was 13.0AFR so no reason for concern there. The car was experiencing missing, so I pulled the plugs to find they were gapped to .4mm.. I regaped them to .75mm. No change in missing as expected or felt. I have ordered some NGK PFR7A plugs but have not installed as yet. I was able to tune out the miss with AFR's richer than 10.8....The car will not be tuned to this as there is obviously a problem. -Timing was adjusted however there was a rythmic rattle heard when accelarting in 3rd or 4th for long periods. The noise does not show up with knock. Response is amazing with 1 bar @ 2900rpm and 1.3bar @ 3100rpm. Power is way down on what I would expect however with this turbo. Similar power can be made with half the boost(inicating at restriction). It has adjustable cam gears so I checked the timing in regards to TDC. I found the inlet cam retarded 10 degrees(crank) and the exhaust advanced 5 degrees. I have dialed them in as best I can so would hope them to be much closer than previous. The car ran almost with no noticeable difference after adjustment, maybe alittle more response. The car still hesistates and misses, is low on power and drops off quickly after 6000rpm. -I have blanked off the BOV to see if it was leaking but this is not the case. -I haven't checked but am planning on. -Exhaust/Cat for restriction -Intercooler for restriction -Injectors for even flow -RB20 Resistor box(is in the engine bay) have to check connectivity and suitablilty with the RB25 high Impedance injectors -turbo compressor condition, check GCG rebuild specs. -compression test -RB20 Camshaft suitabilty Any help, thoughts and guidance would be valued. I don't want this one to beat me. Matt

BoostedR: Do you have a dyno sheet by any chance? And is that a full V-Band system (ie Tial exhaust housing), or just for the dump pipe? I am chasing that up for you. Would be good to see the response compared to a GT3017R form memory it made 1 bar just over 3000rpm.I was wrong about the Vband. I gave him a call(i built the motor a few years back) and the exhaust housing is the 4 bolt .63A/R option. It was ported to transition smoothly into the exhaust. It also has the 4" bell mouth comp cover(not the anti surge one) and yes it does surge slighlty. The Sr20 also has tomei poncams (256 i think), mild porting(bowl and short turns), tial 44mm gate, chinese 4-1 manifold(match ported turbo exhaust housing) Fuel is BP 98. Intercooler was a 620x500x70 PWR tube and Fin.

Adj. Camgears and Low/Mid Power Improvements
BoostdR replied to Cubes's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
i think he meant to say : The engine turns clockwise, so if you turn the CAMS COUNTER clockwise(inside of adj cam gear)u are retarding. Each tooth on the pulley is 15 crankshaft degrees(7.5 degrees cam) each cam mark = 2 degrees at the crank.. So when we say 4 degrees retard the exhaust cam it's actually 2 marks on the camshaft pulley. Beware of some chinese markings as the Advance and Retard are labled backwards. Check them against a photo of a HKS pulley. -
We just finished building a rb28 with a GTK 850 and it is laaaaaagggy. We made more power and response with twin GTRS's(2871R) They are designed for huge boost. The turbine design gives the same impression. So I would pick the smallest you can to JUST achieve the power less your after. My pick for an SR is a V band .63A/R GT2871R, external gate running 1.7bar. We made 299rwkw and very very little lag. Fantasticly broad power range. For a rb25 3071R is the go. I'm sure disco will say the same. and he knows....=)

It's not running rich...and the wick is up there...about 900hp worth on time attack day. I think you will go faster with less boost to be honest as we saw on the data logging.. Anyway I'll see you at the shop. =)

TR30R on EVO 9. Nice Torque

Garrett 2871R-10 x 2 we have made 824hp @ 22psi on BP98 (RB30/26) very responsive or if you could get a couple of RB25 Turbos to be reliable....that would be my next pick. I have one on my 1.6 mazda. Makes full boost at 2900rpm. 1psi @ 1600rpm, 2.5psi @ 1900rpm, 7psi @ 2400rpm. Not bad for a 1.6ltr. redlines @ 7500rpm thats 4600rpm of full boost. Ceramic turbine FTW

+1 KU36. Run them @ 35psi for 38-40 track hot. Nice blue colour around the edge means there hot enough.
-
looks like you could go some more neg camber chad. The Gibson GTR ran 5.9degrees.....talk about knock-kneed
-
usual issue is the eccs relay not being activated by the ecu. The power fc can be fixed with the chip out of a rb25 std ecu. plenty of info on the forum
-
According to the Motec data logging your fastest lap in the 33 was with the least amount of power. Another interesting fact is the car happily spun 27psi of boost, would love to see what it would be putting out now considering it made 824hp @ 22psi. Fun times ahead. James and I where looking at some more ARC goodies for you today.

Needs a front pipe!

Time to update your sig block Chad....1:20.94 Good work

You did well John. The car being as untested as a virgin prior to prom night also showed great signs of potential. I'm looking forward to seeing the numbers into the 15's next outing....no pressure =) Will see you back at the workshop.

On Wakefield 1.5 sec slower than semi's, they only start to work well at 38-40psi (hot). I wouldn't suggest using them as a drag tyre without a resonable burnout. Better than most road tyres, great for the money.

I have upgraded to a M103 ARC intercooler to support over 800hp. Up forsale is my M079 Twin entry Kit. The pipes have been resprayed in a high metallic silver two pak. The kit is great condition with only a few damaged fins. I use the car on the track so response and overall cooling (radiator and intercooler) was required. I Previously ran a Trust intercooler of single entry design with the same overall dimensions. I was astounded to see 27rwkw increase in mid range and 14rwkw up top. Pressure drop at 30psi went from 3.5psi to .5psi.....due to the bell mouth tube entry design patented by ARC. Radiator temps on the track dropped to the thermistate temp of 79 from 83 during cruise and from 89 to 83 on the track due to the through air design of the tube and fins. These coolers are a work of art and in my experience nothing has come close. I was able to run 413rwkw without a problem. Remember these comparisons where against a Trust item not the std. This kit replaced the twin turbo pipe and runs a smooth trasnition from each turbo outlet totally separated to the dual intercooler inlets. Turblance is reduced and gas velocity mainatined. I am located in Adelaide The kit reatils for just $3800 delivered from nengun.
