  1. The biggest mistake i see BY FAR for people new to the track is.. they just go for it straight up, with no warm up. I must have organised countless track days myself, and you can bet your bottom dollar after the first session, a good ratio of the newbies have cooked their brakes, blown diffs etc. Too much enthuse!
  2. s9 hey? (not what he told me!). Anyway i reckon the n1's were awesome, great tyre. It just seems to work better than the others. Perhaps it's the sidewall, i dunno.
  3. I am led to believe the N1's are their own compound, which is roughly equivilent to S8 but (i am told) a much stiffer sidewall. - We had to use 200psi to get them to pop the bead when fitting them! I found them the best tyre thus far. And yes the S7's are basically crap after one day. Dunno how 20" slicks would go, would love to know. I think Miles used some 19" slicks at Bathurst, with paul using 18's? So a comparison from those guys wouldnt go astray, especially the gearing aspect down conrod... Miles, Paul? I guess one thing to consider is how long a porsche cup race is vs a sprint session? The tyres are probably constructed to perform best for typical race duration.
  4. Will be very intrested to see how you go. The difference in gearing msay have an affect on top speed, acceleration and gear selection. Personally i would try the N1's first but either way VERY interesting.
  5. my advice for first timers 1. Take it easy first few laps 2. Warm everything up before you drive it hard (seriously pay attention to this) 3. Cool everything down before you come to a stop (after sessions) 4. Check under the bonnet and car for leaks (after sessions) 5. Don't put your handbrake on (after sessions) 6. Regularly check your brake pads! and most importantly, have fun!
  6. interesting. what compounds do they have?
  7. Well then, news is... AWD Turbos ARE excluded from Type 1, including R35 GTR (NSW Sprint rule introduced this year). So there you go. Also AWD Turbo's cannot have ECU mods in type 2 whatsoever. To ensure stock boost. However, you can run a 6L V8 with massive cam, compression, and any tune you so desire. I guess there are inconsistent rules/compromises everywhere to keep some people happy Such is life@!
  8. Might want to check AWD/Turbo rules for type 2 sprints (no ECU mods). However if you run a 383 cube HSV feel free to run a 260 cam with 600+thou lift and 35* timing.... (which is apparently fine)
  9. Awesome video. I would absolutely love to get into one of those things one day.
  10. One last update, a few months later. The thread on the $100 set (bronze ones above) still lilke new. They havent stretched at all. Amazing the value you can find. Locally made too. I might have takem them on/off at least 40 times since.
  11. If any of you R35 drivers are interested in a private day, at Wakefield Park, Saturday Dec 11 let me know. Actually anyone on SAU is welcome of course, but i hope this doesnt conflict with any other events. If this post is a problem, mods please delete. This isnt about making money, there is no way i will cover costs. Anyway I will be happy to share my wakefield data, tips and tricks for the r35 drivers signed up. Cost is about $150 for the day. Anyone keen, PM me if interested.
  12. Neil, you should have received an email from the panel about the changes - i think a few weeks back? Anyway it's academic at this point. So i assume there will be a type 5 championship, at the same level as outright i suppose. But you'll have the clubmans (on slicks) in the same class, i think? A suggestion i made was for a "true street" class; like type 2 but capped to $60k. And no gutting, no cages, no carbon bodies etc. No trailers! ha ha. Now i would have had a crack at that (in something other than the r35 of course). One of the issues i see is that you have what effectively amount to race cars in every class, the only thing that can compete is something insanely quick, like the r35. In the end, i guess rules are rules and cannot keep everyone happy.
  13. Emphasising type championships more can't be a bad thing. But i don't see why we need to drop outright entirely. To be frank i'm more disappointed i can't find anyone who was part of this survey (which apparently resulted in the rule changes). I certainly wasn't asked, but I guess you only ask those who will give you answers you're after.

    R35 Build

Mark, the S7's go off QUICK. They will not come back, i reckon Get some new ones, you'll drop another second i reckon. Awesome stuff!
  15. Fantastic write up, i am jeaous! What sort of tyre pressures do you think worked best Miles? You had the 19" N1's?
  16. I guess that's just where the disagreement/misunderstanding lies (in the SS class definitions). Taken directly from the supersprint rulebook: CAMS rules are tilted/tainted to allow road cars to compete, across all SS types. And for that reason i don't see Type 4 as a real sports sedan category at all. Ditto for all types really. It doesnt look like we can get past this point, so we'll have to disagree. As for Superlap, I was permitted to run the adjustable wing (I have it in writing, or you can ask Nathan) the reason i didnt run it was that the wing was mounted on a carbon bootlid (which, as it happens, is just a cheap chinese fibreglass item with fake carbon overlay). And SL did not allow carbon bootlids (however, they did allow carbon bonnets, so go figure). I read the rules and signed up ACCEPTING them, with a signature. No point signing up then trying to contest all the rules, hey? Why bother. And as you know the street class in SL mandated tread wear rating of 100 or more (I think). And if you ask me, those tyres were dead set dangerous vs say an RE55. Never never again. Back to SS classes/rules; I am myself disappointed with certain aspects of the 2011 rule changes. Specifically the lack of consultation about big changes. So i have therefore decided i don't want to sign up for these rules. If you don't agree with the rules, vote with your feet and do something else. Don't bother signing up anyway (perhaps without even reading the rules, and then go about changing them to suit yourself) seriously whats the point. It's just not worth it.
  17. No myths here mate, i know this as 100% fact.
  18. I guess it's just me but i see an obvious distinction between swapping tyres out at the track (no matter what they are) and fitting a cage. You do realise some road legal semi's out perform SOME slicks don't you? Where do you draw the line? You can't. But it's not just about the tyres though, there have been issues/unofficial protests about engine capacity, gearboxes (dsg) window nets, wings, race seats, etc etc etc etc etc. And it's all come from a single person this year with a hidden agenda.
  19. NOBODY is proposing that race cars (with a cage or whatever) should NOT run in sprints at all. The issue here is some think (certain) road cars should NOT run - in sprints no less. A category invented so people with road cars can have a crack at the track. All i am saying is, if you insist on unadulterated CAMS rules - go and play in a race category.
  20. I didnt say i'm happy. I have looked into a cage, it's just not going to work in a street car. I can see the safety argument of course, but at the same time sprints are not racing, and NOBODY is racing anywhere under CAMS without a cage. Why change the rules to exclude the vehicles for which the category was invented for? To me that's stupid. A better approach is to just buy a race car, and go racing.
  21. Now that would be hilarious. Dunno how many "registered" cars i've seen turn up, on trailers, gutted, caged, carbon panels with all sorts of race gear. Truth is even a car with a simple tune or exhaust is probably "illegal" in that sense anyway, no car in the paddock would pass. Can't wait for someone to open that can of worms one day.
  22. I ran my 09 car for about a year with the stocker tune, about 10~15 track days at EC, WP and OP. After applying the Cobb tune, track times were no better, and initially went backwards a bit... There are a number of factors. The first generation of R35 tunes had explosive power application, overwhelming VDC thus pulling power and running slower. Thankfully Willall came to the party with a tune which applied power/boost in a more linear fashion, suited for the circuit, which helped a lot. If you're running with an extra 50 or 100awkw, VDC just doesnt work (as intended). You need to turn it off and/or be much more judicial with the throttle. It's difficult to quantify my lap time improvements as i've made a bunch of changes surrounding suspension, tyres, aero and brakes. But if i had to guess, at a track like Eastern Creek, i would say adding 40awkw equates to about a second improvement straight up in the R35. As for 1/4 mile, i can't remember the stocker time, but running the Willall 98 tune, i ran 11.1 @ 128mph, and with Martins E85 tune i ran 10.73 @ 132mph. 0-100km/hr run on the 98 tune was 3.1s as measured on the VBOX. I havent measured the 0~100km/hr with the E85 tune yet, i think.
  23. it's not practical to swap tyres out at the track? ok, whatever.
  24. I'm in Sydney and have the Cobb AP - with three Willall tunes. E85, E85 drag and 98 tunes - provided by Martin. About 385awkw. It really is as good as per the thousands of posts and threads the world over. I think i ran a 11.1 @ 128mph on the 98 tune and 10.7 @ 132mph on the E85 tune (full weight) at WSID so compare these times to stocker numbers and you can see the benefits are pretty clear. Can't think of a downside really! For E85 you will need upgraded injectors and fuel pumps.
  25. Ejector seat been deployed?
