Rb20 Gurus - Help Me With My Turbo Choice!
discopotato03 replied to Psymon's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
There was a Garrett twin scroll GT32 turbine housing getting around for a long time and I'm not sure if its the one ATP sells . I think it was a 0.78 AR T3 flanged thing and the turbos themselves were a GT3267 and GT3271 plain bearing units . Maybe not perfect housings but at least made by Garrett . A . -
Efi Fuel Hose Sizes , And Standards .

Yep I've always liked Nissan OE fuel line clamps , those narrow band Wormald style ones are a last resort . The hose I had used was some American marked -7 5/16 stuff . Going to check out Explosive Racing at Peakhurst tomorrow , cheers A . And I will be measuring the barbs on the filters too . -

On the subject of filters people elsewhere are reporting start up rattles and anti drain back valves not working in "Ryco" oil filters . I'm actually getting a bit of this and I remember thinking that the last Z145 I bought was remarkably cheap . On site reckoned that Ryco Aust was trying to take their "supplier" to task over manufacturing faults with a number of fuel filters . Does anyone have the part numbers handy for ECR33 oil and fuel filters ? Cheers A . -
Efi Fuel Hose Sizes , And Standards .

I decided to stick my Verynear calipers on the just removed Ryco Z201 and was surprised to find its inlet tube is slightly smaller than the outlet tube . The inlet side OD is ~ 7.91-2mm and the outlet is ` 8.00-8.02mm . The box says made in China for GUD which looks like Ryco in Victoria ... I wonder if this is a screw up on the manufacturers part or if genuine filters are like this too . In my case these "Ryco" filters only leaked on the inlet side and the only difference is the tube diameters , it must be just enough not to allow the 5/16 hose to clamp up on though it always did on the cars steel tube side . I think I'll start using genuine filters if the price isn't stupid . A . -
Hi all , I've been having some dramas with fuel leaks on my R33 at the fuel filter . I was under the impression that these cars used 8mm or similarly sized high pressure hose but I don't think this is the case . When I started using Eflex E70 I changed the filter for a new Z201 and fitted new EFI hose as well . Long story short I kept smelling wafts of fuel and finding leaks on the lower side of the filter . Funny thing was sometimes it leaked and sometimes it didn't and no amount of tightening made a reliable fix . In the end I replaced the filter again and refitted the original I assume factory hose which is in reasonable condition - and doesn't bloody leak . I did some research because I used to know of a workshop that stocked a large variety of low and high pressure fuel hose including 7.5mm . Wurth stuff I think it was . It seems that Super Cheap advertise 7.5mm fuel hose which I'm going to look at later today and I'm taking the used filter and some of those nice Nissan style stainless clamps along too . One thing you ntice with the OE Nissan hose is that it has a smaller ID and OD and the std clamps struggle to get over the larger 8mm or 5/16" ID EFI hose . Also , I remember reading here in the past that the in tank pumps EFI hose isn't the normal stuff and using regular EFI hose causes dramas . I found this link to a Gates page that quotes some SAE fuel hose standards and interestingly they talk about special linings for nastier fuels - like current low emissions stuff and ethanol . They ALSO mention that in tank pump hose needs to have the special lining on the inside AND outside to stop it swelling failing or whatever . It makes sense that hose manufacturers are not going to spend money on expensive outer linings for external hoses when its not needed but they have to when its exposed to fuel in a fuel tank . http://www.gates.com/common/downloads/files/gates/brochure/techtipsform.pdf Fuel hose has to be right for obvious reasons and it would be soul destroying to watch you car burn to the ground by the side of the road . Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !
discopotato03 replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
A couple of pages back I spoke of replacing the R33s Z201 filter and its EFI hose . After trying unsuccessfully to stop fuel leaks below the fuel filter I have again replaced the filter and refitted the standard rubber hose below it . I am f**ked if I can work out how 5/16 EFI hose is larger than 8mm since 5/16" is from memory 7.93mm ? Its OD is larger than std and it slips over the steel line barbs way too easily . Can someone confirm that std EFI hose is 8 or maybe 7.5mm because everyone wants to sell you 5/16 stuff . A . -
Does anyone have underneath pics of the mid and rear muffler space of an R33 . I believe they don't have a lot of space and it would be good to know how big the oval mufflers can be . My exhaust is some sort of Nismo the car came from Japan with , pretty quiet and I'm curious to know what they've done to shut it up . I think most Jap exhausts would be 80mm because they can't replicate (metricate) 3"/76.2mm . A .

Stock R33 Bov Noise Mods?
discopotato03 replied to ClutchBurndout-:('s topic in Engines & Forced Induction
That was a good read Mr Mafia . I believe what works in the wilds works in the urban evvironment as well . We as motorists are not at the top of the food chain ie Cops RTA EPA - they have the claws and teeth . In the wilds it never pays to stand out in a crowd because you become an obvious target for preditors and and once they get an eye lock on the trend setter his arse is lunch . Ask yourselves what the authorities look for - easy targets ? If you advertise with a loud exhaust / diff nearly in the dirt ride height / squeeling farting BOV why wouldn't they haul you over and throw the book at you . I reckon its all in the attitude with silly "over achieve" road cars , why people want to advertise their presence is beyond me . Probably the wrong message but you get away with a lot more if you blend in with the crowd . With me any mod has to have function because I don't waste time and money on nonsensicle things . Girls - never met a good one that liked cars making stupid noises . Mostly they think yeah - another little boy needng something else to play with . Far more satisfying getting the girl to make weird noises ... A . -
Contemplating Different Ethanol Blends .

I was crunching some numbers last night so I could have a reference of how many litres of E70 makes what ethanol blend in a full tank and the injector trim numbers to make my "universal" timing and fuel maps work . We assume E70 is 70% ethanol and the R33 tank volume is 55L . Divide 70 by 55 and get 1.272727 . Multiply the number of litres of E70 and you get the blend percentage or effective E number , for example 8L of E70 (should) equal 5.6L of ethanol so multiply 5.6 by 1.272727 to get 10.2 meaning 10.2% or approx E10 . My injector trims are 50 with straight petrol (Nismo 740s) and 65 on E70 because 15 is half the generic +30% fuel for E70 . The trim correction is ethanol content in litres divided by 55 then multiplied by 15 ie E50 = 27.5 divide 55 times 15 to get 7.5 , therefore with e50 the injector trim number for me is 57.5 . E10 would be 5.5 divide 55 times 15 equals 1.5 making the trim 51.5 . I reckon this is as easy as it gets to be using a Power FC/Datalogit/Wide Band and a lap top for doing "manual " flex fuel . Without an ethanol content sensor it relies on you always blending with a virtually empty tank . With a content sensor all you have to know is the trim change calc . Most people couldn't be bothered with all this and it does show up the limitations of computers like PFCs . It gets a bit tiresom doing the idle learning stuff with major ethanol content changes and we really need access to those parameters to chage them quickly/easily . Also you often have to change accel and cold start enrichment each time as well . In the end done carefully this will give you a usable car that can run on a variety of ethanol blends , but I would NOT cain the ass off it without propper tuning because the mapping won't be good enough and engine damage could result . I would not attempt this on anything but a car in a very mild state of tune or if it wasn't one driven reasonably sedately . A . -
Someone somewhere must know the exact differences with late RB20's . Variable cam timing and a shim type valve train would be worth having . I'd also be looking at chamber shape and size because they changed on the Neo 25 - possibly be cause of emissions and detonation reasons . How do the CR and power output compare R32 to R34 RB20s ? Is there an engine manual available that covers all the R34 era RBs ? A .
-
I have not seen the results of a 52 trim GT3037/GT3076R on an RB30 so I'm not sure if or by how much the slightly smaller trim compressor affects spool/boost threshold . Me thinks a higher CR like 9.5+ would pull up a bit more low end torque pre boost and make it a little more linear with the boot in . A .

Back on the E70 for a tank just to use up what I had here , I think my home brewed E25 worked better and certainly gives better MPG . If I can squeese 12L of E70 into one of my larger "10L" containers that would equate to E15.3 in a tank of otherwise straight petrol . Cheers A . -
Help Me Design My Cooling System
discopotato03 replied to Simon-S14's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Years ago that fella from Nispro had an I think S14 and he made a way for some of the post rad air to spin off the tips of the mechanical fan and ducted this air out through a hole in the bonnet . I wouldn't think you're running the RBs std fan but it may be possible to do something with elec fans . I don't think the radiator cares where the hot air goes as long as it can go somewhere so more can be pulled through the core . A . -
New Power Fc (V7.00) Ecr33 Timing Issue
discopotato03 replied to 89CAL's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I just had a thought and it may be a long shot but . In one of the threads I think I mentioned that I set the 50c warm up setting to zero where the default is different . Mine is not a fresh PFC but I can't remember what version it is . It sounds like the thing is not coming out of "invisible learned idle mode" straight away and is retarding the ignition to pull what it thinks is a high idle back . The only other thing I can think of is the scaling with Z32 AFMs may not be spot on at just off idle speeds . A . -

I've just about used up the tank of BP98/25.45% Ethanol and its worked out well giving over 400 km/55L . If I ran it right out I guess I'd get ~ 440 but note I had a lot of traffic driving particularly getting screwed around on the M5 and King Georges Rd carparks . The learning curve is still going and the main thing is that I found having mixture ratios around the mid 0.90s Lambda wise works better at least with the higher petrol percentage blends . I think the trouble with higher ethanol percentage blends at least for the novice tuner is that you can run it leaner than is best without getting bad drivability pinging etc . Its possible that if I used the Lambda numbers I'm running now but with E70 both performance and consumption could be better . I may try half a tank of E70 tosee how it works with lower Lambda numbers , cheers A . -
Pfc And Strange Ignition Retard Issue .

I don't get it as much for some reason with lower ethanol concentrations and I think redoing the idle learn helps . If you check your TPS can you check that the voltage increases/decreases and that the idle contacts open/close properly - assumes S2 type dual TPS . Cheers A . -
Did this end up selling because I'm still looking for one of these to suit an R33 GTS25T . Cheers Adrian .

30S And Taller Rwd Diffs ?
discopotato03 replied to discopotato03's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I partially agree only with an RB30 I think a slightly taller diff ratio and a shorter 5th ratio would make it nice . I always thought the 0.76 5th was a big jump over a direct 4th and it may need to be this way if you wanted to drop back to 4th and boot it - as in get enough revs up to haul . Thats with a std capacity RB25 or 26 BTW . I still think the revs needed at 110 km/h are too high with the standard gearing but without a closer spaced 6spd gearbox its always going to be a compromise . They obviously knew this and fixed it on the later Z cars . I don't suppose the 6 cog can be grafted on an RB block ? A . -

Reposted because of a computer issue , site wouldn't let me edit my last post . So far my current BP98/E25 blend is working out quite well and at least is about as easy as it gets when you have to blend your own juice . Basically you add 20L Eflex and fill , if you want half a tank add 10 of Eflex and 17 1/2 L of petrol , a quarter 5L to 8 3/4 . As I said the Americans reckon 20 to 30% ethanol is the sweet spot for a non flex fueled car and 25 falls in the middle . I've noticed that the higher 75% petrol content allows me to run AFRs closer to the chemically correct (Lambda = 1) mixtures though atm its floating more around the 0.94 - 0.96 these days . This is at light to medium loads BTW . My engine has regained a lot of part throttle torque compared to using the E50 and E70 blends . I get the feeling that you lose combustion heat and pressure at part/small throttle openings and fiddling with the mixtures with high ethanol content fuels didn't seem to match higher petrol content performance . Maybe this is an area where you really need some way to measure exhaust gas temperature close to the exhaust ports and dial in whatever gives the most heat . I tried all sorts of fueling and timing settings and I could not get the part throttle performance with E50 and E70 no matter what I did . I also noticed that they made the turbos response more lazy and I'd say for the same reason - less heat would equal lower exhaust gas velocity and not as much energy to get the turbine spinning fast enough . This is with a GTRS and they are not known to be laggy units , with the 75% petrol its response is noticably better and I can sail up the hills in 5th at 80 around here now with bugger all throttle . Needed more throttle and a bit harder to do this with E50 and E70 . I've got that bigger engine feel back again . Theorising . It may well be my questionable tuning skills here but I get the feeling that high ethanol content fuels are fine when there is a definite need for more octane than 98ULP can provide . Things like very high compression ratios or high boost apps where an engines chambers and pistons are not very efficient designs and suffer chronic detonation because of it . In other words excessive combustion heat and pressure may leave you with nowhere else to go other than a fuel that really resists detonation - compared to pump 98 anyway . For a road car that spends 90% of its life being driven around at urban speeds and light loads I reckon high eth fuels do very little for you - other than to add cost and complications . It may be a case where for dual purpose such as commute through the week and race on a weekend E85 would be fine with a change of maps and a boost increase at the track , Roy mentioned something like this . IMO ATM production engines are not set up to run high eth content fuels and their overall performance and consumption will suffer because of it . Maybe if NA engines had 11-12 to 1 static CRs and maybe turbo ones 10 plus the situation may turn around but I dont see that happening any time soon . Imagine screwing up at a servo and refuelling a car/engine like these with 91 ULP and trying to drive it . Anyway my consumption is looking good so far but I'm only 60 km into a full tank and my R33 shows full till ~ 50 km and drops like a brick to the 3/4 mark . I'm still trimming my mixtures to not use any excess fuel anywhere and my mentors are telling me lean isn't necessarily economical so a bit of a juggle to strike a good compromise . A . -

The BP98/E25 is working out really well for me at the moment . My car has regained a significant amount of part throttle torque and its off idle drivability is much better though I need to do the idle learn again . Not sure but I think that there are advantages and disadvantages with the lower jjjjjjenergy alcohol fuels . We know that developing heat and therefore pressure in our cylinders is what drives us down the road and in some circumstances the more heat the better . My guess is that at part throttle when the effective compression and air consumption rate is low you struggle to get enough heat and cylinder pressure from high ethanol content fuels and so you lose some torque . I'm not sure that adding more fuel at these points makes any difference as in generates any more heat . I spoke to a few people that have worked on a greaat variety of engines all their lives and they think that ethanol is not a magic bullet . -

discopotato03 replied to discopotato03's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Next try today is going to be a pre mixed E25 based on Eflex and BP 98 PULP . I did some number crunching in case anyone else decided to try this blending business and I think the only practical approach is this . 1) Calculate how much ethanol you want to make up the desired percentage ie 27.5L in 55L = 50% 2) Calculate how much E70 or E85 you need to get 1L of ethanol . 3) Multiply that number by how many L of ethanol you want and you know how much E70 or E85 to add to the petrol when you fill right up . E70 . 1.4285 x 0.70 = 1L (or 0.99995 if you are exacting) . E85 . 1.1764 x 0.85 = 1L (or 0.99994 if you are exacting) . So if I want E25 I need a quarter of a tank or 13.75L of ethanol . 13.75 x 1.4285 = 19.64L of Eflex which I'll round up to 20L or 14L ethanol for conveniences sake . This works out to E25.45 , (14/55 x 100 = 25.45%) . My PFC injector trims will come down to 55.4 with 740 Nismos . Tip in 20L of Eflex and fill to the top with petrol in my case BP98 to get E25.45 . Don't even try to work out how to make lesser amounts because there is so much scope for silly errors and wrong calcs . It is possible but its messy trying to put in a given amount of Eflex and a given amount of petrol and no containers are graduated or exactly 5/10/20L either . If you have a "20L" container with 20L in it you know you are going to get close to the right mix if you fill from virtually empty , being a few percent out at low ratios isn't the end of the world if not tuned on the bleeding edge . If my consumption still doesn't improve markedly I'm going back to straight 98 and may give Uniteds 100 E10 a go if its easy to get . A . -
I'm finding it surprisingly hard to find United E85 locations in Sydney . I followed one link back to United and traced three servos ie Blaxland Rozelle and Drumoyne (Sp ?) . I did see mention of a fourth but don't know where that one is . These three are pointless if you live on the southern outskirts of Sydney because they are too far away or awkward to et to . Can someone tell me where the fourth United E85 source is and if theres any down Wollongong way , even thats a bit far really . I was hoping to get a higher blend than EFlex E70 reasonably close because the higher content means less to make my blends up with . Any help appreciated , cheers Adrian .
