MoonButt
I'm interested in getting a R33 GTST in the near future but before I go out and buy one could someone point me to a website or document on what some of the terms mean. I do understand the basics of turbo charging a car. But some terms like bleeder and EBC. Is the wastegate the BOV?? Is it better to import a partially modded R33 or get a stock standard car? With boost controllers could they be turned off? I understand that turbos cant be turned off . But my question is that could I turn the boost down to a point where it at a minimum. and maybe turn it up when I go out for a run. The reason for asking a question like this is that the car would be a daily driver in city traffic for monday to friday but on weekends it will be taken for a blast up into the mountains or freeway runs. And what should I generally look for in a car? Thanks Anth Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/10146-newbie-questions-about-the-r33/ Share on other sites
BigDatto
Check the info on this site: http://www.powerlink.co.nz/~graeme/faq/index.html Somewhere on this site Graeme has a book "The Sky is The Limit" (downloadable PDF). This should keep you busy for a bit. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/10146-newbie-questions-about-the-r33/#findComment-159077 Share on other sites
BigDatto
Also check out www.autospeed.com there are lots of free articles on turbos & turbocharging. Very good DIY projects too ! predator
Here is a good place to start, do a search (top right on the menu) for various things and you'll find some good info.. Personally I think you should go for a modded one as long as you know the history of the car a bit...will end up saving you money if you do want to spec yours up. Otherwise if that isn't your goal, and you just want a nice looking car, go for standard. Yup... anything controller than a bleeder valve will generally allow you to adjust the boost from within the car. Common controllers include the Trust Profec B (or A), Apexi AVC-R, Blitz SFC, and others. Adjustable boost controllers will generally allow to switch between a predefined "high" and "low" boost setting as your driving or even adjust up or down in increments. They are however illegal in some states. I'm a big fan of being able to toggle between the two, as running low boost is like you said, fine for just city traffic and saves you petrol and decreases wear on the turbo and other components. High boost is generally just for the track, or for if you want to drag. Most of the time I just drive around on low boost during the day. as usual: www.meggala.com has lots of info... much of it is for R32 but applies equally to R33. MoonButt
Does anyone know the size of the boot? Or have pictures of one? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/10146-newbie-questions-about-the-r33/#findComment-159112 Share on other sites

Silver-Arrowz
BOV and wastegate are 2 different things. BOV is on the intake side, wastegate is on the exhaust side. YBSLO4
BOV vents intake pressure in order to gain better throttle response and stop compressor surge (air flowing backwards when the throtle door shuts back innto the turbo) damageing the turbine fan's. A Wastegate's main function is to regulate exhaust pressure to the turbo and consequently how much boost is generated. As for the choice of a modded or stock car, go for the stock car every time. At least if you have a stock car there is a lesser chance of the car being driven hard... after all who modifies a car to drive it slower? If ya can tho try and get something in great condition that has say jsut and exhaust and air filter, or some rims and an exhaust to save the couple of grand straight up. Anything modifed has definately been driven more than ya average car. MoonButt
My thoughts exactly. I just like the looks and the possible performance potential. And if it is going to be the daily driver driven off boost for 70% of the time it has to be close to stock as possible. What would peeve me off to no end is to have a fully modded car that could be driven quickly from service station to service station.
