Hello,

I was hoping some of you could help answer some fuel system questions that i have in regards to my unfinneshed project.

Im feeding a fairly modified single turboed RB26 engine with a Walbro in tank pump and a single 044 external pump. The 044 will obviously draw from a surge tank that ill install, but which capacity will best suit my application. I can get 1.5 and 2.5 litre tanks, but which one? My turbo will support 700hp, so i suppose thats a guide as to the limits of the fuel system.

Also, i bought an Earls 'in line' fuel filter with a sintered bronze element the other day, but a trusted mechanic friend said that in his experience these particular filters will pose a restriction to fuel systems like mine, and in retrospect, it does look extremely small! For those people out there with high HP engines, id like to know what fuel filters you are using. Its easy to get an SX or Magnaflow filter with -8 fittings (thats the size i need), but i dont want to spend $210 + fittings for a filter that will support 1500HP! Surely there is something in between that will suit my application. Does anyone know of cheaper filters that wont restrict flow but will perform their job well? It will go in line after the Bosch pump.

Well to start with....only use the 2.5L surge tank. 1.5 litres is too small for what you want and you would drain it too quickly.

For fuel filters, you should use something like an SX fuel filter or try the Vortech. The SX goes for $50 and the Vortech for around $160.

The SX fuel filter should be good for anything up to about 2000hp and has almost no pressure drop (0.1psi) for flow rates over 400L/hr. Need I say more?

Ring (08) 8582 3499 for details on how you can get one. That is in SA.

I'm sure they are available in Brisbane....it's just a matter of looking.

Out of curiosity can I ask why you would not use some type of filter before the main fuel pump?

As I understand and have witnessed, foreign matter is a major killer of fuel pumps. And having a maximum effort engine last thing you want is a pump failing.

The intank pump sucks through a filter (as standard), so this will remove any debris before the 044.

Also, im being a bit optimistic about the 700HP thing, so im sure the 044 will suit my needs.

Thanks for the info, but did you mean to write the SX goes for $150 (not $50)? Ill ring em on Monday.

A guy over at performanceforums has a 450rwkw toyota crown GT42 i think maybe bigger. (Lifting the head of the block at the moment) (Stock standard engine too)

And he is running a single 044.

So for your application on a 700hp turbo, it should do easy.

The 044 is a mother of a pump, that some people underate.

I have several customers in GTRs using this setup

- 2.5L Surge Tank, some with twin or single pump outlets

- 044 pumps

- Magnafuel 2 port Reg

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?

LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it  
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
