I was looking under my car tonight, and noticed I have 2 mufflers.

I wouldn't mind my exhaust being a little louder, so if I took the middle muffler out and left the back one, would it sound better?

What would removing it do to the exhaust note?

Cheers

My exhaust goes something like this.

cat - hotdog resonator - box muffler - polished jobbie at the back.

All this to keep the dB at a safe EPA level. All components are straight through design so there is little difference in power (about 5-6rwkw) between one or all three mufflers.

Mind you, if you can handle the droning on the freeway at 110km/hr nothing sounds better than a straight pipe with single muffler on the tail.

Z.

i just got my middle muffler and resonator removed

and replaced with 3 inch piping from the cat straight to my trust muffler

it sounds awesome , a much louder tone on idle and acceleration sounds like a beast! no droning which i thought there would be but it surprised me! next on my list hehehehehe dump and highflow cat hehee and the cheekiness of a Cat-Out pipe hehe

I removed the resonator from my car not long ago. Makes the car sound a little louder but i notice more backfiring when backing off the throttle every now n then. Does make it sound neater tho, but not hugely noticeable... If you want it to be loud run a 3" system no resonator into a straight through muffler, then it will houl.

for mine ... the long exhaust pipe splits into 2 smaller pipes just before going into the big muffler at the back ... does anyone know if this is a good or bad one?? its got that jasma sign on it too so it must be certified ... its a very quiet exhaust ... can hardly hear it but its 3" pipe down the middle ... any good??

Jasma is a Blitz sub-ordinate company, kind of like Lightning Audio is a Rockford Fosgate product simply marketed as a different company, so your hard-earned dollars end up in the same hands.

My R33 GTS-t came to Australia with this exhaust already fitted (like most), and it is 3" in diameter turbo back, however it is very quiet, so I am of the assumption it is restrictive.

If your's is the same, and you're serious about kw, do what I'm doing - UPGRADE!

Lambros Hi-Tech Mufflers in Sydney claim 25rwkw from their 3" stainless turbo back system - that's impressive in anyone's language. They claim that it's not too bad on the ears, either.

Cost is around $2100 fitted in 2 1/2 hours.

Worth a thought...

What the..................

I have no idea where you heard that, or what clueless hippy told you that, but that's so completely wrong I actually laughed out loud :P

JASMA (Japanese Automobile Sports Muffler Association) is a Japanese Association that "certifies" exhausts made by Japanese companies that conform to their very strict noise level guidelines.

For example, I have a JASMA apporved C-West exhaust.

Case Study: HKS Super Dragers are JASMA approved, but the HKS Drager 2 only conforms to JASMA noise limits with the restrictor in. The HKS Hiper doesn't conform to JASMA noise limits at all!!! :bahaha: :bahaha: :bahaha:

I hope that clears up any misconceptions you have about those pretty "JASMA" plates that are found on some Japanese exhausts...

First I put in a 3"cat Back, resonator with 5" tip. Droned and was much louder $400

Second I had the front half done with 2nd Hand Hi-Flow cat. No Drone but still $450

The back half of the cat crapped its self so I had it gutted (for now, no cost). Drone's again, and is louder still.

Don't mind the sound.........but starting to shit me when I am not upping it.

Small increase noticed with cat back.

Bigger increase with Turbo back.

Even bigger still with the way it is now.

Was looking at one of those Spiral resonator's next just to quiet it down a bit.

Car sounds louder inside than outside.

The less restriction the better.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
