Ok, so out driving up the mountain, third gear and I gave it some sauce to climb the incline. Then TAP TAP TAP TAP (no bang) louder with revs, and consistent with the engine spinning. We limped it back home and killed the engine, the one time I didnt check oil levels... she drank 1.5 litres to show full.

I will get my mechanic to come and look at it, but does anyone have any thoughts on options I may have... if it doesnt cost too much I will fix that engine, if it needs a full rebuild can the cost easily blow out to a point where I should have bought a new engine? I have a few dollars set aside (was for a house deposit, damn) but I cant throw my chequebook at it... Thanks

Oh, I dont need a lecture, lets just take it as read I feel pretty bad about it :D

So, did it belch oil smoke out the ass everywhere when you heard this "noise".

If not then it aint a piston (or 3)

And would make is as others have said, bearing.

Depends on whats stuffed, the crank might not be in a good state now. So could be cheaper not to rebuild and get a 2nd hand if your budgeting

I guess thats what happens when your 1.5ltr in the red on oil :P

Thanks guys, it is a 15 yr RB20 (forgot to mention) was in ok cond before i got it a month ago ( or so the mech said) hopefully I will be back on the road soon :P - staying positive - could be worse, my friend bought a wrx a week ago, and crashed it thursday night, and another friend blew his new engine... Doh' we are not having a good day

your engine is gone!

does it sound like there's a piece of floating metal in the top of the manifold ...?

if so rings are gone and u probably f**ked the block as well its driveable but the damage is done .....

not necasarily, even if its spun a bearing, the oil filter, should do its job and catch the debrie, if its busted a piston it may not have damaged the bores, and depending on how bad the staration was it might have only lightly scored the bores..

but given its an rb20, just get a bare motor, and swap all your manifols etc over, should only set you back a few hundred bucks for a bare long motor

actually it really depends on what broke or what is loose the oil filter doesnt catch everything! well i got the same noise and well lets just say it went through the whole engine.....

and about the bores if the piston is stuffed and he drove it home im sure the bores would be f**ked!

My r33 started making that same tapping noice which can be confused for a noisy tappet, lifter. I rung my dad which is a michanic and he said go get some oil it will be cool.

Got 2 km down the road and she seized! Number five piston, Big end bearing. Block f**ked. Just managed to machine head enough to sell off, crank completely stuffed. Cooked my starter motor trying to start it!

Big end bearing could have been end of story, But wise old dad said drive it!

f**k

Where ever your dad works I would not be going...surfice to say never listen to family

Might be an idea to pull of the sump and see if anything is evident. Also change the oil to see if there are any unwanted particles in the oil, strian it through a stocking unless you have a magnet lying around

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
