I was thinking about making a catch can at home instead of buying one. Most of the catch cans you can buy are quite large and could easily fit 0.5 - 1.0 Litres of oil in them.

For those of you with a catch can, I was wondering how much oil is actually collected/drained from the can, and how often. Please provide your engine type, kms the engine has done and power output to get a gauge on how big I should make the can for my car.

For reference I have a stock RB26 (bottom end) - making about 325rwkw's and every time I go out onto the track for a 3 lap sprint I have to drain about 1.5L of oil out of my catch can.

But my car is pretty excessive in this front.

The amount oil coming out will depend on the condition of the motor and the amount of boost your running. As rings wear out they allow more blowby. Raising boost will also create more blowby. for example my RB25 with about 40km with stock boost does not blow out a single drop of oil. Our shop race car s13 sr20 with 1.4 bar boost, blows out about a quart of oil after about 2-3 laps. we had to plumb a drain tube from the bottom of the catchcan to the turbo oil return hose so that we didn't starve the motor of oil.

In an RB it has more to do with just "worn" rings etc.

SR's and RB's cant be compared in this topic.

RB's have a large problem here even if they are totally healthy in the motor side of things

I'm not concerned with anybody who races their cars. I'm only really interested in daily driver cars and how much a stock or lightly modified RB would blow. Does the average Jo that uses their car for a run to work and back each day with the occasional spriited drive really need an catch can that can hold 1 Litre of oil. I think not.

You should perhaps look into the reason you require a catch can, if you need one then most likely something is leaking, such as the turbo seal as you are getting oil in the intake piping. You may as well just fix the turbo seal rather than making a fix for the oil in the intake for a normal street car if that makes sense.

My car only has 21,00km on it so it doesn't get any really noticable oil blow-by (nor leaking seals), but I want to prevent oil coating my intake piping now and in the future. IMO a catch can would be useful to gauge whether any seals DO start leaking in the future.

I was going to ask this myself. I dont get anywhere near as much as 1 litre but sometimes if i really gas it.. I can get 200mls of oil in the bottle i rigged up. got a oil catch can and im going to run it back to the sump and into the intake as well.

Sydkid told me that any high performance engine needs a catch can. I got away with having one till 220rwkw and he said i shoulda needed one for that much power even...

So yeah now i got a gt3540 running low boost and it does bow oil when i give it heaps.

I was actually considering using a fuel filter/water trap that diesel engines use (See pic). This can hold about 100mL but you can get bigger ones. Only costs about $35 too

    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
