I had my clutch changed to an exedy heave duty clutch about a year ago, and pretty much since then it's made a funny squeeking noise when disengaged (pedal not pressed). It is a bit intermittent, but is usually there. It sounds like a cricket and if I press lightly on the clutch pedal it gets louder and softer, so i can actually emulate cricket noises if I like.

Does anyone have this problem? i think i remember asking someone this before, and the reply was that this sometimes happens with the heavy duty ones. (Is this something to do with the pressure plate? I remember reading everyone saying the throwout bearing is the suspect one, but mine appears to be happening under diff circumstances..)

I don't think it's dangerous or anything, but it kinda defeats the purpose of looking good in a nice car, that sounds like cricket trying to mate!

i would think its your trust bearing mine did the same thing when foot is off the clutch it sounded weird i guess like a cricket ??? but when i depressed my foot it stopped... if that is what you are referring to i would replace the bearing if it bothers you other wise dont worry about it.

leech_ & FSTR32 - the issue he's talking about is different..

when he pushes his foot in you can hear it squeak..

mine does it.. plus a lot of others cars..

do a search - someone else had a thread on this..

amuses me when i'm in traffic.. sounds like someone's rooting under my car on a squeaky bed.. ;)

if its a squauky noise you hear when u engage and disengage the clutch, then it could also be your clutch bracket. This is generaly because the spot weld on the bracket is becoming loose. i have allready had to get my bracket re welded and i think its going again.

yeaa my 32gtst had the same problem after 1 year of owning it, cricket noise huh , yea thats a good wat of describing it as i dunno how to describe it to mechanics haha, i said sounded like a disc spinning. If i were to fix it , how much would it cost ?

Have to be careful not to spray it all over the clutch plate..Any liquid lubricant isnt good for a clutch.. Id have to say its got somthing to do with you throwout/thrust bearing.. A worn bearing can make some pretty strange noises. Either that or is a bearing in the gearbox..

could be thrust bearing, or it could be a real cricket. Go to a pet store and buy some spiders, preferably a huntsman style and put them in various locations on the car. Also works well for car security.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
