Wing brake lights

Hi Guys,

My wing's brake lights seem to have died. I ripped them out to test various things, and the car's putting 12v up to the lights fine...

Anyway, I'm in the market for a replacement. It's a stock R33 GTS-T type-m wing. Anyone know who's the best person to see about these things? Or perhaps someone has a spare one lying around collecting dust?

I remember reading about this a longtime ago.

Apparently the lights are all LED's wired in series so they can take the 12v.

The bad thing is if one stuffs up the whole lot won't light up (cause they are wired in series).

Pull the light out of the spoiler and check each LED, when you find which one is stoofed just replace it.

The hard part will be finding a replacement LED the same brightness as the others. Might be easier to replace them all so they all look the same.

I pulled mine out and cracked it open pulled all the LED's out and replaced them with a knight rider kit from Dick Smith it looks good if you like a bit of rice on your car :alien:

Scrolling lights?

Is there a secret to cracking the light bar open? It looked sealed to me.

do they scroll only when u press brake?

Yep they only scroll when the brake is on you can make them scroll left or right or you can set it like night rider and it bounces from left to right.

Airzone: the light is a sealed part but if you are carefull you can crack it open .

Is the knight rider light legal (ie: have you been hasselled by the cops). It is the kind of thing that would attract attention.

No i have had it for about 2 years and had the car over the pits once and its never been a problem

how much was the knight rider kit??

I think it cost around $40 for two kits and i wired them together because one kit wasnt long enough to do the length of the light. It takes about 1/2 a day to make the kits up.I hate them DIY kits they are too fiddley :uh-huh:

If you put a diode prior to the LED's they just about last for ever.

humm... my spoiler light is also stuffed, how did yas get the light out when theres no room to get the screws out, whole spoiler off ??, maybe its just my r33 wing, which i thought was standard... any help would be great

i used a phillips head screwdriver with a 90deg bend in it

I used a screw driver with a removable head. I jammed the head in a shifty spanner and sorta held the whole thing together while I unscrewed it using the shifty for leaverage... Kinda dodgy

I assume you mean the series 1 spoiler, the curved one that sort of rounds off the back end?

Yes it is a pain to get the lights out of it, the best way is a ratchet with a screwdriver bit, works a treat. Also, I believe the LEDs aren't strictly in series - they are grouped into lots of 5-10 LEDs, and all of the groups are wired in parallel, so that if you blow an LED, only the group that it's in is affected, not the whole array.

thats right with what Revhead said, they are in groups, i had a few out on mine when i first got it, it is an aftermarket GTR wing but the principal is the same, it had actually got water inside the casing of the light and corroded part of the circuit board away, re-soldered it back together and put some silicone around it all and it worked a treat, it was just a hassle to take out as the whole wing had to come off.

How in gods name did you crack open the light bar? The glue holding the read part of the bar to the red bit seems a little strong...

just persistence and a very small flatblade jewelers screwdriver, they eventually open, just be very careful not to crack it fully

thanks for the help guys..as soon as i get it out im going with a whole new set of led's, if i got me a "knight rider" kit the rta/cops would defect me in a second...bit gay anyway i thinks !
