Hey guys,

you have no idea how brutaly upset i am at myself for doing this, but we'll forget all that stuff for now.

I slowly reversed into a parked car in a server the other day. It's a black 99-00 celica... basically hit it's rear bar with my rear quater...

The damage was basically reasonably heavy scratching which to my eye looks like sanding it back and respraying... no actaul structural damage or anything...

The guy knows the pannelbeater that his insurance (nrma) would go through and basically said if it went through insurance they'd charde $1200 or outside insurance will cost $700...

They guy i hit has been pretty patient while i try and figure something out but he doesn't really want to drive around to different places looking for other quotes (fair enough).

I went and found the owner when i hit the car and have every intention of paying to get it fixed well, but is there anything i can really do to try and find a place cheaper? i'm assuming not....

Also, on a side note... I've got full comp on the car but the excess is something like $2100... i know if i had third party property the excess would be less... can you make a claim soley as a third party claim? potentially reducing the excess etc??

Thanks for any help or advise.

Regards,

Casey

Legally the owner of the car u hit, must get atleast 2 or 3 quotes from different smash repairer!

or if u wan, u can bring an inspector, to inspect the damage. He can quote u how much the repair going to cost, in that way, u can be sure how much it really cost! (don't trust the car owner's friends, they can really screw u up!)

If the damage is less than the claim and access!!! dont go through insurance. cos it will cost u more to pay premium in the future!!!

hmmmm with an excess like that, you must be insured with Just Cars?!

If you make a claim, you will loose your No Claims Bonus as well as having to pay that huge excess so I wouldnt worry about that.

Cash settle it, but get a quote from an independant repairer also. Perhaps take some detailed photos of the damaged area and give them to the repairer if the owner doesnt want to drive his car around to show them.

really? they must get a couple quotes??

what if he decides, nah not bothered to do that, i'm just gonna go through my insurance (his insurance). surely then nrma will say, fine go get it fixed and we'll chase (me) up for however much it costs??

definately don't want to go through my insurance, damage wont be anywhere near 2100...

yup!

he must get aleast 2-3 quotes,

then pick the cheapest quote!!!

happened too many times for me!

I guess this would be the case if there was no insurance involved? but my fear is he'll just say i'm not bothered to get quotes, i just want it fixed so i'm going to nrma today to get them to handle it....

if this happens, it'll almost certainly cost me more the $700

y not pay an inspector? about 150-200 though, (NRMA as well, but am sure his quote wont be bias compare to the NRMA friends of the owner!)

they will go to the car, check it up and give u a written quote!

that way you know for sure you wont get ripped off by the owner and his smash repair friend!

or if u know someone that know his stuff, bring him!

personaly i would give him the 700 bucks get a reciet for it stating what it was for and move on. any other way is just gunna cost ya more

its not law to get 3 qtes. if he claims through his insurance company then if its their policy to get 3 qtes first, then he must. i work at shannons and we have a choice or repairer, only 1 qte from that repairer is required.

He shouldnt lose his no claim bonus because you are the one at fault, and his insurance company should claim the moneys lost back off you hense it SHOULDNT cost him anything.

Isnt its the law to get 3 quotes?

Even though its not his fault, and he claim insurance.

they will also increase his premium as well

not true. in this case he can get one quote. if you say it's unreasonable and you 2 cant agree on a price then he can just send you a letter of demand requiring you to pay the amount. if you dont you will end up in small claims court. $700 sounds pretty fair to me. pay it.

thats wat i'm thinking... at the end of the day itd be easier for him to go straight to his insurance... it's not gonna cost him anything cause i'm at fault and will accept that, plus it'll get sorted quickly....

i guess i'll just cough up the $700 assuming that's a decent quote... don't think i'll get independant assesor or anything...

I appreciate the advise given... thanks a bunch guys...

i thought some insurance company! that when u claimed insurance! either its ur fault or not. U do lose your premium!

because u listed as (likely) to have an accident status!

not true???

not always the case. if u were not at fault, and can identify who is then you shouldnt have to pay an excess or lose a rating. the insurance company will charge the guilty party, instead of hiking your premium on the next renewal.....

thats how it is where i work anyway, dunno about others....

    • This is how I last did this when I had a master cylinder fail and introduce air. Bleed before first stage, go oh shit through first stage, bleed at end of first stage, go oh shit through second stage, bleed at end of second stage, go oh shit through third stage, bleed at end of third stage, go oh shit through fourth stage, bleed at lunch, go oh shit through fifth stage, bleed at end of fifth stage, go oh shit through sixth stage....you get the idea. It did come good in the end. My Topdon scan tool can bleed the HY51 and V37, but it doesn't have a consult connector and I don't have an R34 to check that on. I think finding a tool in an Australian workshop other than Nissan that can bleed an R34 will be like rocking horse poo. No way will a generic ODB tool do it.
    • Hmm. Perhaps not the same engineers. The OE Nissan engineers did not forsee a future with spacers pushing the tie rod force application further away from the steering arm and creating that torque. The failures are happening since the advent of those things, and some 30 years after they designed the uprights. So latent casting deficiencies, 30+ yrs of wear and tear, + unexpected usage could quite easily = unforeseen failure. Meanwhile, the engineers who are designing the billet CNC or fabricated uprights are also designing, for the same parts makers, the correction tie rod ends. And they are designing and building these with motorsport (or, at the very least, the meth addled antics of drifters) in mind. So I would hope (in fact, I would expect) that their design work included the offset of that steering force. Doesn't mean that it is not totally valid to ask the question of them, before committing $$.
    • The downside of this is when you try to track the car, as soon as you hit ABS you get introduced to a unbled system. I want to avoid this. I do not want to bleed/flush/jack up the car twice just to bleed the f**kin car.
    • But again, the engineers said your cast aluminium would be fine based on the load that would be stretching that section. Same load stretching the bolts in a flex (not the twist), with a much smaller cross sectional area than the original part you've broken. It's why you'd need to be using higher strength bolts, but that's just making up for the strength you lose with less area...
    • I am truly amazed someone on this planet was able to cycle the pump using a scan tool. I've always ghetto cycled them on Nissan 90s shit boxes by slamming the brakes and pulling the handbrake to agitate the rear wheels enough to cause a speed difference
