Hey all, I was just wondering what the deal is with going to get permits for mods & taking the car through the pits. I've only been pulled over twice & only the first led to a vehicle check, but I would like to save as much hassle as possible down the track.

One concern I have though is that when they check it out if there is something they won't pass/permit, what happens then? I haven't got a yellow to get off, but I want to get permits for as much of the things as I can so it shows I am doing the right thing. I have a lot of mods (350rwhp, use your imagination ;p ), and I haven't got a permit for any of them. I want to get permits because if I got a unproffessional cop he could write out a list as long as my arm & if I ended up having to take it back to near stock that would really suck.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? A few things about my car though, the exhaust is turbo back but pretty quiet considering it all, the rims are 17" which are legal, a/m steering wheel but I'm pretty sure it's still legal size & boost gauge on the a pillar but at the bottom so it's below eye level. These aren't too much to worry about & all should go fine & permitted (exhaust excepted unless I get really lucky), but is there much difficulty in things like high mounted turbo's, or any piping or anything like that?

I also have an atmospheric bov, but it does take about 8psi to activate (I run 12) & when it does it isn't even really loud. It sounds serious, not ricey :P. It's welded to the pipe & is pointed into the bay, not facing up. Can you get them passed or not, or can anyone see any trouble for me?

Any help is appreciated, cheers, Nathan

I've never known them to put a sticker on a car that was brought in for a permit.

Especially as you are trying to do the right thing.

They'll either give you a permit or not.

I don't think you will need a permit for a turbo unless it's a highmount or something.

In the stock position one turbo looks like the next so they would most likely not issue a permit for it

Cant answer the turbo one, but I got permits for strut braces, intercooler and piping, pod, manifold (stainless), guages, bride seats, steering wheel, hand brake lever, shift knob, etc

I also have 17" wheels (17x10 and 17x9) coilovers and cat back - the guy said they dont give permits for them as "they are either legal or they are not", but in total I got permits for around 10 different things. The car had just been through a full inspection to transfer rego - I just paid $37.50, went back to them and they wrote the permits up on the spot.

  • 1 month later...

From what i heard from a friend who went to welshpool to ask, they will never issue u a yellow sticker to get a permit as they know u're doing the right thing. But i always wondered if the car is like really bad, would they let u drive it home still?

I've got permits for my hks sqv and exhaust. Need to get the rest of the permits soon.

Cheers!

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
