Gday guys just want to start a little bit of a open discussion here, we all know that usually the more octane you run(obviously to a certain limit) the better it is for your car when your dragging/track etc but since you all know the petrol prices have sky rocketed, $1.41 at mobil just before for synergy so i just want to see what people think/experienced when running normal octane petrol not 98 RON? i have been running mobils synergy since i got my car like 2 years ago and it has never noticably misfired or had a problem due to a bad batch of petrol, but since im still at uni and earning jack shit a week was wondering what other people run? I dont go to the track and dont regularly drag so would it be worthwhile staying with 98RON?

with the stock ecu if you put in crap fuel and nail it, it will pick up detonation and switch to the low octaine ING timing map and back off timing everywhere. it will certianly work, just feel a bit sucky and flatish.

users with aftermarket ecu's can achieve the same goal by basically taking say 5 degrees timing out the of IGN map and it should run medicoreish on crap fuel

I'd rather put my sneakers on than resorting to not putting 98 RON petrol in my vehicle! Thats the last place to cut corners on a budget I say..

Edit - BTW I believe with the ignition retard, your fuel economy will suffer so you wont save much $$ at the end of the day. Maybe enough to pay for a cup of coffee and thats it.

    • Any advice? Yes. Learn to make your own lines, they're actually pretty easy and you can make hard lines, flexi lines, whatever you like, perfectly fitting to your application.  https://www.efisolutions.com.au/    sell a huge range of hoses, fittings, everything you need. You might have to outlay a bit in the beginning (eg I bought a 5 metre roll of stainless tubing that I've used less than a metre of) but still cheaper than buying premade shite hoses that sort-of fit.
    • If by axles you mean driveshafts, they're supposed to have play in them. They are not hard to recondition, it's just pulling apart the cv's, cleaning them and regreasing, fit new boots. I've only rebuilt one set and there was fk-all wear in them, still running just fine 8 years later.
    • Note, the aluminium bit that screws in the end that you have to remove to dismantle the rack is single use as it's punch-marked, it will strip when you unscrew it, and then you have to flatten the notch in the steel rack body, screw in a new aluminium end when rebuilding, then punch-mark it again once assembled. it is also 'somewhat tricky' to refit the rack>steering wheel linkage gear as it needs to be set to the right preloads etc. A rebuild is probably something that's better just given to a steering shop for a couple of hundred, unless you're mad-keen to do it yourself.
