GDay,

Ive got an Autronic SM4 on my R32 and was a bit dissappointed to discover that the lead that you plug into the serial port of your lap top is one of the older 9 pin plugs and isnt compatable with my new lap top. I was just wondering if any of the Autronic guru's out ther have come up with a solution for this, as ive heard that Autronic havent updated to a newer serial port plug. Is this true?

Ive also heard that the '9 pin serial port to USB adapter' that you can buy from Dick Smith etc ($80!!) is notoriously unreliable and doesnt work with all computers.

Can you get the lead modified at all, or is it not that simple?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated, as i really want to use my V DASH software and the data logging stuff on my new lap top. The car is getting tuned next week after being off the road for two years!

Thanks,

Shaun.

hey mate im not sure with my ecu but i guess id be in the same situation as u r with my sm4, i was supposed to get it back last night but i need another fuel pump, but when i go down there again ill ask and see what lincoln says

good computer choice!

you can get a belikn usb to serial adapter that works fine. my mate uses it on his sprinter.

Any USB to Serial adapter will work - don't believe what you are hearing. Any Windows XP laptop will work with this combination.

I used one for 3 years without a hassle - with the older clunkier SMC 1.99 software.

They will cost you b/w $60-$80 though. Chicken feed against the price of a SM4.

Great choice of ECU by the way. >_<

Regards

Andrew

Thanks for the info guys! As you all say, its an awesome computer; im really happy with it. Ill get the adapter then. I was just trying to save some coin thats all.

Ill also keep you all posted on the results of the tune.

Thanks,

Shaun.

We've found that the ATEN usb to serial to be the best runs everything we've tryed including autronic and datalogit.

Thanks for the info, but where would i get the 'Belikn' or 'aten' adapters? Just Dick Smith or any main stream electrical store like that, or are they more specialised than that?

Cheers,

Shaun.

Just for more clarification, my tuner uses the ATEN adaptor when tuning my Autronic so I would go with that.

Note I have an earlier version and not the SM4.

The Autronic forums will also have the info you need. A gold mine of general Autronic info there as well. Highly recommended.

Exactly what rob82 says.

Go with the Aten USB to Serial. This item will work.

Yep, for those wondering the same thing, the Belkin adapter works too! I just had to change to com port 8 under settings so the V DASH program would recognise the USB connection.

I love Autronics!!

Shaun.

Sorry, I don't want to high jack the tread but I'm dying to ask!

Wanted to know what everyone's fuel comsumption in from an RB26 with Autronics.

My fuel consumption at this point around 16L/100km's with some city and highway driving, so around 340km per tank.

I'm running an SMC 1.92 with 500R CDI

Im using 800cc injectors with 260in 260ex cams, this is stated as injectors and cam duraction plays a part in fuel economy.

Im not sure what my fuel comsumption is like yet; i just trailered the car to the tuners today. It'll be interesting to find out though. Can you run closed loop on the SMC? I bought the wide band oxy sensor so i can run closed loop on the SM4. Ive got 700cc injectors and standard cams at the moment.

Just a side note; the tuner just rang me up and told me that my Iraway 7 spark plugs ($180) were fowled beyond repair. I did fowl the plugs on start up the other night, but i removed them and burnt off the carbon etc with a gas torch. It then started perfectly. Is it possible to ruin plugs by fowling them with over rich mixtures? I understand that the car may not start, but would the plugs be stuffed beyond repair? Ive only started the car about 10 times on those plugs!

Thanks,

Shaun.

Yes, you can run closed loop on the SMC 1.92. The wide band o2 sensor you got, is it the Bosch item LSM-11? The SM4 will not accept a direct 5-wire wide band sensor, I have confirmed this with Autronics on their forum. It will do a 0-5V o2 sensor with voltage scaling for the A/F readouts. Still a better way then a narrow band 0-1V method

The SM4 has a very flexiable close loop control so will work very well.

What I would do about the plugs is let the tuner replace them but tell them you want them back. Give them a clean the way do did it before (best way I beleive) and stick them straight back in. I don't beileve that they are fouled beyond repair and even if they are, surely not all and even if they all are, well at least you have them back.

Let me know how your fuel consumption goes as I am interested in the results.

Good Luck with the tuning! Post the results :D

Yeah, ill post the results for sure! Im hoping for around 350rwkw, but having said that i dont care that much about a power figure; just as long as its nice to drive and usable on the road.

Im not sure what sensor ive got. I think its a Bosch one, so i hope it works the way i want it to. Ive spoken to the tuner at length about running closed loop, and i bought it off him, so im assuming its suitable.

Ill definately be getting the plugs back too!

Shaun.

I have to agree, always tune for best drivablity and what ever WOT figure you get, thats fine as long as its useable.

Looks like you got the O2 Sensor Autronics recommend. The LSM-11 is a 4-wire wide band as they call it which can be used as a narrow band sensor or a wide band sensor. It will only work wide band connected to an Autronics A/F Meter and when connected to a SM4 which will feed it the 5V and the tuner will use voltage scaling to make it work with close loop control.

I have used both closed loop control and just the target A/F in the map. You would be suprisd at how good the targets are when they are tuned at the correct A/F.

Only problem I have had is that the sensor would only read accurately to 15.5 A/F but could run leaner at certain load points when on cruise. If I disable closed loop and just dial it in at the rpm and load point the A/F I wish to run I could run leaner then when closed loop is enabled.

I not suggesting anything here, just the Autronics is so very accurate and precise - what an awsome ECU.

Is the tuner an Autronics dealer?

    • Car has been running great, I've put about 300km's of break in time on it. First thing that stands out with properly sealing rings is no more noticeable crankcase smell coming out of my catch can. This may seem insignificant, but the constant smell while driving around was infuriating. It's also nice to see my oil level remain stable. Two new issues have developed that I only noticed this weekend though. There's a very noticeable driveline vibration past 100kmh. I only noticed it now as I've been babying it under 100kmh in the backroads. This comes as no surprise as I'm running a one-piece shaft, and I paid zero attention to my driveshaft angle when I put everything back in. I also have a fair bit of voltage drop on hot starts. The starter audibly is forcing. No issues on cold start though. I must not have removed all the paint under my main block ground during assembly. I'll try and take care of both those issues this week once the kids are asleep.  I also received all the parts I was missing for my direct port setup. I will hopefully have pictures of that up soon. I'm hoping to get back on the dyno the week of June 30th as I'll be on vacation. I'm confident I should be able to make north of 500rwkw on pump gas and WMI. I'll go back again later this summer with E98, but I want to confirm my ethanol content sensor is working properly first. I've never seen it read anything but 11%. This makes sense for our 10% ethanol content pump gas here, but I would expect the occasional movement between fill ups.
    • 75% complete. Will now need to get a new axle with 5x114.3 hubs and then figure out how to customize some mudguards for it once the wheels are on.
    • Trailer prep is underway... Lined up the wheel to get a rough indication of how it would sit Then removed all the bits (as far as possible) and gave the frame a light sand and quick lick of paint   Then added some carpet
    • okay, so I figured this out, removed needles and reinstalled after swapping the gauge face on my triple gauge for my ER34, all work and look good. I tried to do the same for the main cluster, but the main cluster gauge faces are dished, the replacement gauge face are flat, so due to the dish in the org face ,mounting backing plate (clear) and depth of the needle, the flat gauge face will not work. I notice that R34 gtr gauges are flat, appears to be different clear backing plate that aren't dished. are these available, or what have others done to install flat gauge faces?
    • Cheers mate. Seems some people get lucky others don't. It looks like the motor was detonating (to be expected if it was overboosting I suppose) as the pistons had a lot of detonation damage, and the bearings were stuffed. The bores were very scoured too, not sure if that's from the pistons or bits of ceramic turbo. By the by now. Have been trying to avoid the rabbit hole too much on the rebuild, and there's been a few hurdles along the way, but with any luck I'll have the car back soon™. Might even pop up a thread then.
