My VL is getting an RB25det put in at the moment.

The half cut was originally a manual, but an auto box got sent with it instead, as I wanted.

The mechanics ring me up and said the R33 auto box didnt come with an ecu or wiring, and said I should probably leave my current gearbox there as its too much of a hassle......

If I can actually get an ecu, is it much of a hassle to connect it all, or are they just crapping on?

I really dont want the VL auto in there...........

well normally mechanics dont do ecu installs, they get installed by qualified auto electricians,

and yes it is a hassle if they dont do them often and has no clue on how a skyline ecu is hooked up.

mmm its gonna be hard tracking down an auto ecu, your prob gonna need to search in japan, maybe yahoo auctions and than have it shipped over

not sure if there are aftermarket ones

have you thought about building up the Jatco auto from the VL? when toughened up, these boxes are really good. probably be cheaper to strengthen it up and fit it rather than muck about with the R33 auto box.

I'm not too worried about what the cost is, what I'm more interested in is which box changes more smoothly or has a better feel. Which I would guess the R33 box would be a LOT better? Plus, I'd feel more comfortable using a box that was made/calibrated for the engine.

get the vl jatco box, it will be stronger, cheaper and doesn't need ecu signals to change gears. so you can use any ECU you like.

most ecu's are manual only and dont support signals to auto box such as the r33 auto box as it needs signals from ecu on when to change

yeah, plus if your gonna do a few decent mods, u will want the box to hold up, and building/strengthening the VL auto box is alot cheaper and easier to do than modding the R33 box. I have a mate with a R33 auto making 280rwhp and his stock auto box is slipping so you probably wont get away with too many engine mods before the box will require some help. many others had dramas with their auto due to biggish power?

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
