I need some help/advice from you comp experts here. My internet seems to be dropping out quite frequently and it annoys me - for instance when Im downloading something. What I would like to ask is if this is a isp issue or how my lan is configured. Im using a D-Link wireless router with my comp using a wireless adapter, if that helps. What Im stumped with is that I can understand dail-up timing out every 4 hrs or so but not with ADSL. Any ideas?

Try using a cat5 cable - if you can

Watch the adsl light on the modem, if it starts blinking when it dropps out, it means it cant reach the exchange, call telstra.

make sure the modem is not overheating - is it sitting on carpet?

turn the modem off and on, does it come back, or do you need to re-start your computer.

Run ad-aware and use firefox as a browser

Can you ping the modem when it dropps out?

Give these a go, pm me with the results

Cheers

Dave

The modem is using the latest firmware and is quite ventilated. No cables are used because our computers are not physically conected to the modem - ie were all using wireless adapters. The isp that Im with is Internode - so in saying that, has other people with internode experienced the same problem? I remember also that when the connection does drop out, only sometimes do I need to reset the modem. If I wasnt paying so much for internet then I wont be making a big deal out of it but then again its a problem none the less.

u should have told me last nite whe i was over, i would have looked at it..i had the same prob with mine, n i got netgear router/wireless, the prob was the phone lines were old n 2 much data made it cut out, internode reduced the speed down to 8mb, which is still ok, and now dotn have it anymore...occationally cuts out in afternoon, but im not home so i dont care :)

ring the up n get them 2 test the line 4 u

My first guess is the router. Net Gear is budget equipment (good for the price - but this is the sort of thing you have to put up with)

Since others have offered better quality options, give them a go and see if it fixes things.

ADSL is always dependant uon the quality of the connection (a common weak link) so this is a possible concern but I would have thought you would get problems at other times aswell (do u loose the signal when your system is idol?)

Cabel is a safer and faster option but isny always convinient. If you can borrow a 30-40m cabel and try it out it may help.

i hope this helps.

    • From my memory, which isn't that great, we did have issues getting the large throttle body on my old LS1 to play nicely at idle, first it would stall, then it would only idle at 2k rpm, then it would hang at 2k rpm for a few seconds and then drop and stall, then, finally, the best we got was it would hang at 1.5k rpm for a few seconds then drop to around 800 rpm The tuner stated that large cable throttle bodies are a PITA, and if I wanted anything better than what we ended up with I would need a electronic throttle body and all of the aftermarket ECU stuff to run it
    • So, my intake arrived  I'm not happy with the coating finish so I went to Supercheap and got some black wrinkle paint and some prep stuff I was initially thinking about using grey wrinkle paint, but finding a quality product that gives the texture I want was "unfindable...", so the tried and tested black wrinkle paint is again finding its way into the engine bay for the OEM look I'll sneakily head into work and get the big ovens cranking to cure the paint over the next week or so I've also contacted MX5 Mania today to talk about the install and tune, so painting it is my "main effort" prior to sending the car off In other news, the correspondence from the US supplier is fair to midling to say the least, I'm still trying to track down the intake box thingie with the larger intake pipe to suit the throttle body, it still is "awaiting fulfilment" (no stock currently available), if it isn't here soon I'll just get MX5 Mania to fabricate up a CAI that is easy to service the air filter
    • Thanks mate. I thought it would be that way.
