i have installed a front mount onto my stag, and the standard snorkel that goes to the airbox no longer fits due to the new intercooler piping.

anybody else installed a front mount like this? if so, what did you do with the airbox setup?

spend a cpl hundred on maxx's cai & pod, use the now-unused hole under the airbox to draw in air via a front air feed...... would then be a real nice setup, all finished then with loads of cool-charged airflow.

or modify your snorkel to suit..... or sell it to Ska! and metal-fabricate a new snorkel?

Can i just ask what front mount did you use and was it a kit?

Did you have to cut holes in the chassis for the intercooler pipes like most aftermarket kits?

I will be getting my STAGEA tomorrow hehe :)

Alex cut down and re welded his standard snorkel, see if you can find the thread, it might even be in the DIY Stagea section I think?

yep, look here

Cheers

Ska will ban your sorry arse if he doesnt get a snorkel soon! nah good luck with it, it can be altered to suit.

Flysly, betcha jumping outa skin - Chris's car will be a top car mate, enjoy it!

And Luke - I reckon you should make up some Stagea shirts, Id love a S insignia on a shirt!

yeah he did a gnarly but effective job, using a plastic bucket and glue. very McGuyver... with a bit of mad max thrown in.

Im looking at getting one of maxx's CAI boxes and fashioning a snorkel or something using those fully sic monza pipings that you get from autobarn, leading down to where the old side mount feed is, big gaping inlet in the nismo bar.

ahh is it YOU thats buying chris's red RS4? youre gonna love it - will miss the pwr/weight of an rb20det in an s13 though...

is a nice ride that one, dont know who got the better end of that deal, hey. good job.

I'l look into it at some stage Brendan, could be interesting, imagine the conversation point "what's that?" "Ummm, a Stagea logo..." "A what logo!" Ten minute explanation follows "Blah blah blah..." "right, why have you got that on your t-shirt?" "Umm, well..."

Hehe, not sure if I can deal with that but would be pretty exclusive I guess!

Yeah for sure.

Id like one... on a jumper and a shirt, maybe beastien's black/red/green logo on the jumper, and your logo on a shirt.

easy to get one printed up locally..... dunno how youd go with legalities, but Id offer you cash for your time and materials to print me some!

5XL please, nice and long for talies not for fatties LOL

I didnt use glue, i used a soldering iron and melted the two plastics together. Since ive sanded and spray painted the snorkel.

PS. Does anyone have a standard snorkel for sale? I want to get a standard one for when I remove my FMIC kit and selll up.....soooooo maybe we trade EGA41T?

PPS. FLYSLY, If you are in the mood for buying a front mount kit, mine will be for sale in a few months time when the car is fixed. Look in the thread which I posted above. The full kit is good for 300awkw and id let it go with the piping, silicon joiners, clamps, GTR cooler AND a slightly damaged (fixable) front bar reo so you dont have to cut up your one and the cooler also mounts up first thing (mounting points already welded onto the front bar reo)

i used the GK Tech kit, and yes i had to cut one hole in the chassis, aswell as the front reo bar.

not too big of a job but it did take me about five hours to do the whole job cos i didnt really know what i was doing, and GK Tech forgot to put instructions in the boxes that the kit came in.

Alex, if you can show me a photo of the finished product then i may be interested

well i decided to have a go at modifying the snorkel... here is the progress/results

some of the photos are a bit dark, but you get the idea, it turned out great, looks awesome when there is enough light to see it, and i reckon the pop rivets look awesome

    • And one last super random thought, I remember when SAUNSW had a dinner with Alan Heaphy, and another with Fred Gibson there was talk of the R32 GTR cast alloy uprights failing in racing, and one of the things Fred did when they had to add weight to the vehicle was taken the failing alloy uprights, and have them made of steel. Does anyone remember back to 1990/1991/1992 and WHAT was failing in the front hubs/uprights?
    • If you truly want to know how the original failed though, was it a factory defect possibly etc, send it off for investigation. Would probably cost a shit tonne.   The ones that you need to win lotto for, unless you have a good reason for that part to be bolt on, I'd probably roll with getting a few small stitch welds carefully put in place as an extra safety factor once everything is all torqued up tight
    • Are you sure? Because I wouldn't necessarily be. Do we even know the material they've made the new uprights from?   Looking at the fractures in the earlier pics, it does to me look like both a twisting, and levering upward action doing the damage, so you're hoping for both compression, and tension. Depending on the bolts, they can stretch (even high grade bolts will) and now you're hoping for the threads themself not to stretch, as if they do, bye bye mating surfaces holding together, hello bolts now going into shear.
    • Lets say I wanted to buy this, specifically for this purpose. How do I actually perform the function. Can I still buy a Consult-1? Am I about to be burned by the fact my car is a 2000 model Series 2 R34 and thus will be some stupid other system? Do I just need this -> https://obd2australia.com.au/product/nissan-consult-14-pin-to-usb-ddl-diagnostic-interface-with-ftdi-ft232r-chip/ And with what software?
    • That's probably OK. That's a face to face compression joint between two surfaces with the clamping load provided by those bolts. So.... it's unlikely that the bolts will end up feeling that load in shear, unless the clamping surfaces are not large enough, bolts not got enough tension on them, etc etc to prevent the two faces from moving wrt each other. Which... I would hope the designers have considered, seeing as it's probably one of the most important things the upright has to do apart from resist collapsing in its own right. But yes, it would definitely be worth asking them what their safety factor on that part of the design was. I tend to think that the casting, being a casting, is not necessarily the strongest bit of material in the world. It's about an inch square, and when you think about the loads that are being put into it, you have to wonder what safety factor the Nissan boys (and every other OEM engineer who has designed all the millions of other uprights that look essentially the same) used to account for defective casting, aging, severe impacts on the wheel, etc etc.
