and the best way for him to clean the lifters would be???

metho and fuel ??? or parts washer mix ?

That may work but a better way to do it is using kerosene. Parts washer fluid does contain kero but it also has other products. Once in kero for 2 hours, place them in oil no thicker than 10/30 and soak for a further 12 hours. Fit and go. Should not require any bleeding.

The new rb30det we just put in the race car, it took a good 15-20 mins of idling to get the lifters to stop ticking. Took a while for them to bleed themselves out. Also got a few good revs as well, tell ya the oil pressure from an n1 oil pump is bloudy high, maybe the higher pressure helped them bleed quicker. But it does take a little while for it to happen.

Keep in mind it could be lots of things ie bent valves etc....but in my case.........-I just finished a rebuild and had a similar problem. No comp on 4 when we fired it up the first time, after a series of tests/checks I did a leak down test....I could hear the air hissing from my exhaust.......so my ex valves were stuck open. aha. No probs you say, threw 2 new ones in and tried again....oh oh, now no comp on 1 and 5......Should have put a whole set in when I had the cams out. Anyway, chucked a new set in and all is well. You may well have a bleeding problem but I am told they are unserviceable so you could be taking your chances replacing only some of them like I did. Bad news is......Nissan charge around $100 each!! Good news is I got a set for less than half that and still might be able to get another set if you need them. Drop me a PM if it gets to that! Good luck Bud.

You said you blew them out? Maybe pumped air in to them?

I have a set of lifters soaking in diesel and appears to have really pulled quite a bit of crap out of them, the little hole on the top and side I can see a little stream of black crud.

One of the 24 lifters felt as if it was a little stuck so it will be interesting if it fix's it or not.

I'll give the kero a go.

I had thought about heading down to bunnings and picking up some toluene for the clean.

ive got an n1 oil pump on my car so i think it should be right after a while.

my brother in law has told me it wont be a valve.. it would more likley be a lifter.. i'll keep driving it and see how i go.

ill keep you all posted.

Quick note. If it's got no comp and its not firing on that cylinder, the unburnt fuel might wash the bore and make running in (the rings) a problem!

Toluene is not adviseable...I believe it is carcenogenic so if you are using it, make sure you are properly masked and do not get any on your skin as it can be absorbed that way also.

Yes Toluene is pretty damn nasty... :D

I'll stick with the diesel and kero.

I've never had any dealings with lifters before.

How are they supposed to feel? I'm assuming they are supposed to pump in and out easily, I have a 8 that are nice and free where as some of the other move a little and some are completely stuck.

I highly doubt this is a lifters problem.

Sounds more like a bent valve to me but I have been known to be wrong before....

I assume that not much was taken off the block?

And when you installed the head with the cams in it you made sure no# 1 a @ TDC and cams fixed in correct marking alignment prior to fitting belt?

I have an issue with either a lifter or spring that has gone a little daggy.

At high rpm and higher boost levels one of the cylinders begin missing, power goes flat, it then runs on 4 or 5 until the lifter bleeds down.

I'm throwing new springs in to it and will be checking out the lifters also.

There's also another issue with it... Occasionally (blue moon) on cold starts it runs on 4 or 5 for 30 seconds or so then smooths out, exactly same sound and feel as when the lifter pumps up at high rpm/higher boost levels.

'Maybe' one of my lifters are a little sticky and not bleeding down or something.. nfi but will get to the bottom of it soon.

im starting to think its a valve, but would a bent valve give me a lifter noise? as in the ticking unbled lifters make.

ive done 110km so far and had no big change. although the first time we did the motor there was low oil pressure which made a lifter noise on all cylinders, now the noise is only on #1.

well we took the lifters on the exhaust side out where we suspected the problem was. the #1 lifter showed signs of it getting stuck half way, which would leave the valve open.

we also tried to blow air into the #1 cyl, and unlike before.. it didnt let air through... CHEERING.

GDay,

So, when your all talking about lifters, do you mean hydraulic buckets (are they the same thing?) as in an RB26 head.

I feel like a bit of a noob, but ive got my head apart at the moment, and got a bit concerned while reading this thread about proper storage of the buckets. Obviously ive gotta keep them in order and also keep the shims with their respecttive buckets, but whats the best way to store them for a couple of months?

I also dont understand the problems that can result from improper storage (as whats happened above^^ bleeding lifters??). Ive just never heard of it before.

Thanks,

Shaun.

yep as cubes said they are solid and just store them in a clean package or somethign so they dont get filthy dirty for when u re-install them.

i been sorting shims lately and they are a pain in the arse installing the cams 20 times with my 11.35mm lift makes it not enjoyable

Ok, thanks guys. Ive only had experience with RB26 engines, and i was starting to worry. I just spent an hour making a container filled with oil to store them in! Im such an idiot!!

I was wondering why i couldnt see any holes for the oil to go into the buckets. Noob!

    • What an awesome idea to fit the facelift Lamborghini Diablo headlights. They are a perfect fit!
    • An update regarding the registration with the DVLA I sent off the paperwork the day after I collected the car from the port, two weeks later it was all returned with a letter explaining they have rejected the application. This was because the cheque was £20 short for the road tax (I used a price list I found online). Nevermind it is what it is, it was sent back to them the following day with a new cheque. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, I called them for an update to be told it had been rejected. Yesterday (16th September) I received the documents back along with another letter, this time it was because I didn't put an X in one box on the V750 (personalised number plate certificate), which declared that I had the rights to the personalised number plate. Why this wasn't mentioned in the first rejection letter, I don't know, but it could have saved this headache. The documents were sent back today, so fingers crossed third times a charm and it'll FINALLY be registered on the road just in time for the bad weather (woohoo!) To cheer myself up I lowered the front 25mm, was sick of seeing it sit like a monster truck. No idea how much clearance I'll have getting on and off the driveway, I'll worry about that when I can actually drive it
    • You're going to miss not worrying about rust in the strut towers like the Skyline shitboxes out there
    • A few little updates that weren't filmed due to not taking long to do or not interesting enough for their own video. My new K&N Air Filter arrived, I went with an RU-4180 which matched the dimensions of the universal cone filter the car originally had.  The battery had gone flat, while that was charging I tidied up the spaghetti wiring at the bulk head and down the sides of the engine Next job was to swap the stereo The Kenwood harness had the female ISO plugs cut off and the male ISO plugs cut off the adaptor loom and joined with bullet connectors. I ordered in a repair loom through work and re-did it all. New Kenwood unit installed (Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth, Reverse Camera) The bonnet/hood gas struts have been poor since collecting the car. I couldn't find any suitable replacements locally so took a chance on a pair from AliExpress.  The originals don't use a retaining clip to secure the cup onto the ball fixture, would explain why I struggled for 10-15mins trying to pry off the cups. The ball fixtures unscrew using a 12mm spanner, new ones are the same size. Sadly no photo of them fitted, you're not missing much lol The dished Momo steering wheel got replaced with my Momo Tuner, turns out I ordered counter sunk bolts for the horn trim ring (like they normally are for the steering wheel) instead of allen cap (flat seat)  A terrible photo of a Quaife style gear shift knob I've had stashed in my tool box for many years after purchasing the incorrect thread size (I can see a pattern emerging with ordering incorrect parts...) Also threw in a cup holder and a (empty) Boss Coffee can, because why not
    • GT-R clearly the better choice! The 300 is certainly not insaly fast but has a decent amount of poke. Does a nice little drift around the corners with a decent amount of throttle. It's VERY predictable in a slide too.  Feels so progressive! People probably presume there's a 25 year old driving it based on my behaviour this week! 🤣
