How trustworthy would a set of custom billet (unforged) titanium rods, based on the rb30 rods plus some beefing up? I have access to some pretty good CNC machines at work and am very tempeted. What about titanium pistons and valves, retainers (oohh I am getting excited again)

I would expect that the reliability of the "titanium" (actually its alloy of titanium, aluminium and vanadium) rods has more to do with the machining process than with the material itself. The reason that forging is so popular is that it retains the advantages of the even microstructure of the billet without introducing "micro faults" caused by machining.

micro faults being what? machining marks? heavy cuts? Maybe some stress releiving is necessary.

I did some googling, didn't get much info on titanium pistons, but C300 sounded good. (might be the end of molten pistons, maybe).

Have you priced titanium lately?

I spoke to Argo about getting them made, material alone would be $6,500.

If you can affort it than they would be the best rod you could get if made properly. More durable than aluminium, obviously not as light.

Pauter titanium rods

USD 1,350ea equates to just under 11 grand Ozzie for a set of 6 plus shipping. I don't believe there's import duty on goods from the USA anymore, but you may be liable for GST on top.

SyndeyKid, do u mind if i ask what rev limit you use in your RB30 engines equipped with spool rods? what is the maximum rpm you have used & what is a safe limit for circuit & drift work? ever had a failure related to them? that is damn good value for money for rods that can take 750hp! Cheers.

Responses follow;

1. Who cares about a 7,500 rpm rpm limit when you have 750 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 1 bar of boost at 3,500 rpm. I only rev an engine to make more power (before and after the gearchange) and 750 bhp is plenty with a 3,000 rpm wide power band.

2. The max rpm depends on how you balance it, I am sure the rods would be OK to 8,000 rpm. But if I used that sort of rpm I would be well over 800 bhp which would exceed the BHP limit anyway. I really don’t think that it is important.

Good point SK :ermm: , cheers for you expertise! by the way what turbo are you using to get response like that & still make 750hp? i was planning on using a GT3540 with 0.63 exh. as response is the main goal but i only planned to make a max of 600hp. Cheers again for your help :D

It's not just the turbo, it's camshaft selection, porting, compression ratio, manifold and tuning, tuning, tuning.

But 0.63 is too small for the power target, so 0.8'ish is the go.

Hi can anyone please help me? I"m looking at building an RB26/30 but the block is NA one and aiming for about 500rkwk + NOS. reading through topic it seems the SPOOL rods is the best value for money for which i might go for.

But what's the choice on the REV I beams rod from www.hioctaneracing.com?

I'll be using the new HKS TO4Z with 63T A/R 1.00.

1.With this combination i would like to know which FORGIES would be a good matching, at the same time a good value for money and brings the compresstion ratio to its standard form of 8.5:1 or 8.6:1?

2. What size head gaskets and which type would suit this?

3. what would be the best combination for camshafts choice of duration and lifts for both inlet and exhaust to bring the boost earlier and at the same time allow for higher redline RPM say of 10 000?

4. I'm in sydney where's a good place to get porting the head, nitride, balance, crack test, blue print, o-ring, stress relieve and some other methods of strengthening the durability of the head, crank and block done? How much should i be looking at?

5. In regards to ECU what do you think of the Microtech? as Motec M800 is alittle out of my reach.

If a motec is outta your reach, then so is making a 26/30 rev to 10k.

That is going to be one expensive engine.

My budget for building the engine is roughly up to 15k.

Yeh my guess was around that figure. 15-20k. That will be one tough engine. Im guessing for drags?

If it counts for anything were using the REV I beam rods from Hioctane in our rb30det :D Note they dont have the conrod oil squirters in them, so your relying on splash feed from the crank. We havent had any problems yet...

15k worth of motor and your only willing to pay 1k for managment. I dont get this mentality. 15k worth of engine can be rendered worthless very quickly.

I think the Microtech compares to the Motec is not as bad as you think, it's enough to do it's job. But if i can get it for around 3k then i'll definitely go for it then.

Some how i think 15-20k is not enough to make an engine all that tough...but it sure is good enough for me when i'm only looking to 550kw at the wheels including NOS.

Yeah the car will be set up for mainly drag races but occasionally 1 or 2 nights on the street that is why i want to use the HKS T04Z because i'm thinking with the 3L capacity boost shouldn't be too laggy. But hell is gonna be a monster. It's too bad that HKS don't make a 3L V-cam system and only the 2.8L kit. :ninja:

How much BHP are you making so far on the REV I Beam rods?

around 400bhp atm, so not much...well actually if it was a shootout mode power figure then it would be about 480bhp. Were still only on a run in tune...full tune will come in the next few weeks. Id imagine up around 550bhp next tune.

What mods do you have for your car and what engine you're running? ECU, Turbo? How's the response?

Rods are now in stock again.

I also have a special on CP Pistons to suit RB30 and RB30/26/25 ( there are two types available for the RB30 engine using RB25 or RB26 heads, one with 8.5:1 comp the other with 9.0:1 comp )

And I also have a package deal for rods and pistons.

25/30, powerfc pro, gt35/40 .83ar rear, 850cc sards, vct, ati damper. The response is extremely good, full boost atm is only 18psi, get that by a shade under 3500rpm, redline atm is 7k will be 8.5k after next tune.

    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way. Simples
    • Ok, disregard my “rate them” comment, sorry for my unrealistic input
    • OK, now we are ready to get started. You need to remove the air boxes on each side for clearance. The cover is straightforward, undo the clips on the top and lift the front cover out of the rest of the housing. If it is tight you can remove the air filters first. The rear section of the airbox is trickier. On each side you need to remove the Air flow meter wiring which is held to the airbox with a clip; you need to get behind the clip on 2 sides if you want to remove it without breaking it - unclip the harder side and pull on the clip with medium force, then unclip the easier side and it should pop out The airbox is held onto the intake hose with a spring clamp; you need to get a flat bladed screwdriver behind the spring on both sides and pop them outwards. When you have got them in the right unclipped place they will stay there and the airbox slips out pretty freely. Put a rag in the intake to prevent anything getting dropped in there, and also to prevent you seeing that the turbo seal is leaking oil (as they do). Then. The top of the radiator is held by a steel plate, it is secured by 2x10mm and 2x12mm headed bolts . Remove them and remove the plate Also grab the bushings that hold the radiator to the plate on each side so they are not lost!
    • Next, remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, both are held with a spring clamp. While you are under there, tackle the Auto Trans cooler lines.  Again both are held on with spring clamps, and as mentioned above you should cap them on the radiator side with an 8mm cap, and on the car side loop them with a length of 8mm pipe - this will stop you losing a dangerous amount of AT fluid during the rest of the job If you've been meaning to add a sender for AT trans temp, this is a great time to do it; put a sender fitting into the passenger side line as that is the inlet to the cooler/radiator.
    • Next you need to remove the intake duct (as with pretty much every job on these cars), it is a series of clips you gently remove with a flat bladed screwdriver. They do get brittle with time and can break, and I have not found a decent quality aftermarket one that fits (they are all too soft or flimsy and don't last either) but the nissan ones are a couple of bucks each (ouch).  Once the clips are off (either 8 or 10, I didn't check) you lift the intake duct out and will see the reservoirs Undo the line into the radiator side cap (some bent needle nosed piers are awesome for spring clamps) and then remove the 4x 10m nuts that hold both in place.  I didn't get these pics, but remove the line under the radiator reservoir (spring clamp again) then remove that reservoir. Then you can get at the intake reservoir, same thing, spring clamp underneath then remove it.
