I'm in need of tints. (i said tints) lol.

30% is legal, but dont seem to be very dark.

I've heard the rear window is exempt from this rule. In other words, you can have it as dark as you like.

Is that right?

Also, anyone ever had an insurance claim rejected because the tints were illegal. Been warned about that too.

here's a pic courtesy of darK

In that photo, the R32 on the right has the "darkest legal" tint which is 30%

the one on the left is 20% (darker than legal).

What tints do you have?

Where to get them done in Sydney?

it depends on what you want really.

when i was going to get my tints done on my r32 i was looking at getting 30% but wen i got there decided to go 15% as the 30% was a little too light for me.

the 15 is great, not too dark in broad daylight, and u cant see inside at nite assuming theres no light shining onto the front window where you can see in a little.

give greg a call from unique window tinting, his numbers in a post of the window tint group buy. you get it done in hornsby somewhere.

yeah i wish i had gotten the 15% because 30 isn't dark enough. at the time i was just thinking that i wanted the car to be legal, now i care less and want it darker. go 15

rofl Its very hard to see in the dark with the windows up at nite. But excellent for the day when its very hot.

My tints were already on the car in Japan, I "think" they are 15% but not confirmed.

I got 5% and it's dark :teehee: night time drivings a bit differnt.

lower and you will find it hard to see out to your side mirrors at night

Yeah you really have to look over your shoulder becuase your just can't see others properly :ermm: but still i think if your causious enough and not lazy when merging then lower then 20%'ll be fine :P

I also drive with my fronts down most of the time unless it's raining so............ thats another reason why i didnt' care to much.

Your only alloud the back windwo as dark as you want on things like utes and vans ect. Ever window in NSW is 35% and front window is not alloud ot be tinited.

BTW the legislation came in in1994 so if you have a 93 model techencly you can get it as dark as you want :) as there were no laws for tinting in 93 against them

Michael

I have 30% on my Black GTR to save any hassles with Police mainly, although is a little light for my liking.

And have 15% on my Daily driver Pajero and Magna which is perfect ie Hard to see into but easy to see out, and not overly dark for police attention (although illegal)

Do not go 5% as it really is impractical to see out of at night and 'looks' illegal

bwahahaha

check out a Stagea next time then, lads.

we get away with being 'dark-as' due to the Seraphic glass used in Japan - its not tinted and therefore passes ADR's. :D

whilst Id like to tint the front driver & passenger windows, thats illegal here in SA so I wont.

Dont know about having the rear window as dark as you want munkeyboy but like the others have said 30% is not dark at all. I have 20% on my lude and I rekon its perfect and never had any trouble from the cops before. Thats nuts micheal_1882 5% haha nice clean looking line btw.

 thanks i'll try and get some picks up of the whole car, the actual drivers side and passanger looks darker then the ones you can see in the picture :D i think it's becuase it's like 1week old vs (how ever old the Japanese tint is)

    • If your current chain of thought is, I'll go somewhere like pick and payless (or equivalent) and causally remove the bit of roof with your BYO grinder then casually weld that into your car... oof. It might sound easy but you will 100% end up with a warped roof. You say you'd prefer some ugly fab work, but I don't know if your prepared for how ugly this will be lol.  I've seen professional welders do similar but easier repairs and still end up with warped panels.  It is reasonable to assume that from your current skill level, you won't be able to do this cut and paste job while keeping flat panels.  Ok, but we are here to learn. This might be the go... jump on car sales, sort by price, buy the cheapest thing with rego and drive it home. This is your new practice vehicle. If you're thinking of doing the cut and paste job, try it on this car. Cut out the panel (hey it's a perfect fit) weld in the panel. See what you think of the results.  Next thing you could try, practice removing the entire roof in one piece by drilling out all the spot welds etc. Have a crack and welding the roof back on.
    • I've never welded but I own a welder and I've always wanted to learn. In fact I had already looked at a 1 day welding course in Sydney.  I'd prefer some ugly metal fab than anything weak.  I'm challenging myself a lot with this car. For so many years I've just paid other people to do things and I've always been keen to learn and get better.
    • Ok, thats a good starting point.  So before we start.... do you mind if the car say isn't a strong as it was before? My first thought is go excavating for rust. You'll be left with a gaping hole, that will be filled with fiberglass. You could make it look factory pretty easily but yeah, if you never crash it will never be an issue right? Before we look at other options, how confident are you welding?
    • Oh this is my 1998 E39 5 series. It's worth more to me than financial value. It's a project car for me to love and work on without fear of f**king up something that has lots of value or that I need to keep running.
    • I'm super realistic here. I love the car and want to keep it but I know it's days of perfect condition are well and truly over. I just want a fix that won't come back.
