Searched for: AFM= 0 results, Air Flow Meter = 5 pages, checked em all out only about 3 helpful

Hey unhappy with the way the car is performing and have just tried:

New pump

New filter

Checked voltages and contacts on all coil packs

Regapped NEW iridium plugs to .8mm

Done full ecu and o2 diagnostic check.. Both of which were fine

And so am left with a few options, 1 i can do tonight is cleaning the AFM

So i read from GTST a while ago that you just grab a Can of wd40 and spray the AFM.. But where on the AFM? Open it up and spray inside the box? Pull it off the intake piping and spray something on the bottom? Where abouts?? Also is there any tests i can do to see if this thing running correctly? Like with a multimeter for example?

Or just gimme a link that has answers to both these questions, if u can find 1.. gl;

I cleaned mine a couple of weeks ago, you need to get yourself some electrical contact cleaner, pull off the afm by taking off the hoseclamps and disconnecting the plug (be careful as sometimes the electrical connectors can crack easily if the plastic has aged bad). Give the whole inside of the afm a liberal coating (or if you're like me it was more like 6 coats lol) of contact cleaner, focusing on the hotwire sensor itself (thats the bit that sticks out).

Leave it out to try for maybe 20min in the sun, give a final visual inspection to make sure you're happy it looks clean, then reinstall. Some people choose to remove the protective mesh that covers the inlet and outlet sides of the afm but i really dont think it would be a restriction...its there to stop nasty stuff from being sucked into the inlet if you're filter falls off or something.

As for testing there is a way to do it with a multimeter, but i dont know the procedure. I have a blitz r-vit that tells me afm voltage, since it plugs into the consult connector i assume any consult interface would do the trick if you have access to one

Hope this helps :whistling:

yeh dude that helps a heap, ill have to go raid my cupboards for something other than wd40 i suppose as you use that to losen things;

Edit - Gonna go with the metholated spirits option

If you have an oiled pod like I used to, clearning it works wonders.

Basically, if I ran my finger on the inside of the AFM (not on the element obviously), but on the black plastic bit, there was a greasy film, which was also black and dirty, since the pod let through quite a bit of dirt.

A can of cc at dickos is like $20. I just bought the big one. hit the element with it every few seconds. as a plus side, it also dripped onto the bit around the outside and cleaned that too.

I posted this a few days ago

Ive only just purchased my skyline about 2-3 weeks ago and i have noticed that when accelerating it seems to get more boost and accelerate quicker when i push the accerator to about 3/4 of the way in, and when i put my foot flat down i get less boost and slower acceration than at 3/4. Is this normal or is there an easy fix to this problem???

then someone replied

I had the same sorta problem a while back when I first got my 33. Ran so much better at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle but ran like shite on full. Turned out my afm was shot. Maybe try swapping with someone to see if that fixes it. Is there a massive mid range flat spot that seems to clear about 6k? Thats what happened to me anyway... ran way too rich.

This sounds exactly the same as my car.

Do you think cleaning the AFM would fix this??? Or do AFM f**kup all the time and need replacing?

mmm, i used contact cleaner to clean my afm

since ive done it, ive noticed the engine warning light flashing briefly at high rpm

no knocking or anything (checked on pfc)

when i did clean my afm, a shit load of dark gunk came out of it and i run a pod down low behind my front bar

getting it all checked out in a week or two

What made you think it needed cleaning.

If no dirt came out of it then chances are there is a fault somewhere else.

AFMs can be tested by checking the resistance between pins but I have found this unreliable because the problem is almost always dry solder joints between the pins and the circuit board.

Dry solder joints typically give an intermittent fault so may test fine then play up when you refit it.

Then again the problem might have nothing to do with the AFM.

My AFM looked pretty much perfect, but i sprayed it out anyway

No difference for me unfortunately, so i gotta try something else i guess

Didnt see that section in the general maintenance, thx, forgot stickies dont come up in searches

So i read from GTST a while ago that you just grab a Can of wd40 and spray the AFM

When did I ever say WD40?

I have said “Degreaser” many times.

When I did mine, I did it with degreaser then hosed it out (low water pressure), then shook it dry, then dried it out properly with hair dryer.

Ohh yeh, degreaser degreases, wd40 gets crap unstuck, mixed up somewhere there

PHATR32, There is a randomly occuring problem, changing in severity just as randomly and i am piece by piece replacing/changing/"fixing" different things that have been suggested to fix it. Cant think of any other way to do it.. I have been to different mechanics and there guesses are sorta random, unusual and costly so i was doing all the cheap stuff people have suggested for me to do

oh ok, just wondering.

anyways, i used meth on my one. might help to get a clean spray bottle and spray the metho directly onto the element. let it dry then spray it again.

you pulled any error codes? might give you a clue? good luck with it.

steve

Yeh i used meth on mine to

got code 55, which means all ok so no probs there, ill give that guide a reading, thx.. Hmm, didnt think it could be a connection problem.. Will be difficult to borrow some ones AFM so ill open it up tomorrow, check if the connection is sketchy and then get my auto electrician to resolder em

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
