Hey guys, I never wanted to have to post about problems with the car, but tonight, I was driving along, and then something felt like it let go.. The car started making a loud squeeking/grinding/screeching noise when ever It moved back and forth in gear..

So i got home, started looking under/inside all around the car, brakes etc etc.. and then I went to fiddle with the gear stick and the dam thing went into 3 and 4 without me even having to step on the clutch..

So I'm pretty sure that's where the problem is.. but why would my clutch/gearbox make that sort of screeching sound?

Oddly enough, it stopped on the way home.. which was for good or for worse...

I think all of it is under warranty though.. ( bought from a dealership with 12 month warranty ) so we'll have to see..

Any ideas as to what you guys think happened to the car?

the noise.. no idea. but with the car off, u can still put the car in gear without putting the clutch in, its usually a little bit harder, but the synchros are probly just lined up for 3rd n 4th wen u turned the car off

EDIT: Turns out I'm a real idiot I think.. I never knew you could change gears without the clutch when the car is turned off... ( don't think I ever tried ) So yea, can't change gears when she's on but can when she's off.. sound normal? lol

Can you depress the clutch? If not then thats what gone, either one of the main bearings in there or the pressure plate itself.

Same sort of thing happened to me, one of the springs had fallen between the plates and caused some damage all the way back to the bearing. Do not try and drive it if this is what happened...

It lets me despress it.. Read my edit above as to my gearbox thing that I thought was happening.

EDIT: Makes no difference probably, but tonight I filled up on Optimax after previously running Ultimate.

squeaking and grinding could be the clutch slave cylinder? It's the piston bolted to the side of the box. Have a look to see if it's wearing on the fork too much or something.

Otherwise, squeaking commonly comes from the clutch pedal/spring from under the dash.... it's hard to tell exactly where you are saying the noise came from.

Does it still do it? Or has it stopped?

Is the clutch working properly? or not at all?? Does it grind as if it's trying to change gears without the clutch depressed??

The clutch appears to be working fine, no grinding, the squealing noise has stopped...

I doubt it was the gearbox, I think it's something to do with the rear driveline of the car, maybe the back left suspension... feels a little weaker in that corner when driving the car around... Im yet to push it again.. I don't want the whole rear to fall off lol

does your gearbox have inspection covers??...

check all your rotors for deep abrasions if a stone HAS somehow lodged in.

do a service on your car, drain engine oil and gearbox oil and diff oil and check for any large lumps of metal,

remove rims and visually inspect your suspension.

hope this helps.

Well I'll get someone to take a look at it soon while also getting an oil change, thanks for the help guys.

    • @GTSBoy This method was able to get readings of -10 to -2, so it looks like its monitoring.  Now I need to figure out why the vacuum on the line provided isn't alternating with manifold pressure.  I went with 2 lines that an RB25 tuner recommended but I'll get a longer hose and try directly off the back of the manifold.  He may have been used to OEM intake setups while I have a DBW setup that removed the MAF and IACV.
    • I work at a car detailing and tinting shop called Quark which gets all manner of German cars in usually (mainly due to a contract with Mercedes Benz Kita Osaka, BMW Nishinomiya and others) but every once in a while something special comes in, like a fully restored 1972 HS30 Nissan Fairlady 240ZG... The shop owner had immediately started applying film to the windows as soon as it was in the shop so the interior was completely covered in towels and plastic sheets. But I could get a few photos of the engine bay which was restored like new. Such an amazing car to see in pristine condition in Japan these days.
    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
