Well.. as my luck never seems to get better it appears that the motor in my sunroof is giving up..

It will go up and down, however it doesn't have enough grunt to move it back and forth and I have to physically assist it..

I've rung nissan - $720 for a new motor..

What are peoples thoughts, is it worth taking to a sunroof place and asking them to have a look at it? Or what else could it be? maybe it needs a good bit of grease..

I'm getting frustrated with this car!!..

How easy would it be to get a second hand motor?

Any help would be great.. cheers

Yo man,

Before doing anything else check where it would be receiving the most restriction and spray it with silicone lube. It comes in a can and is greasy-ish.

My power windows were like that when I got them, sprayed the rubbers that sit at the top of the doors and they went like new. Only did it once in the car and didn't have to re-apply.

Worth a shot - LUBE RUBBER!!

Cheers CC.. i'm going to go see my mechanic this arvo and i'll probably have a look at it later this week when changing the gearbox + engine oil..

The motor isn't completely dead, so there is a chance that something has just dried out and that the slidy rails are getting stuck.. it deteriorated quite quickly.. moved well.. than not as much.. than not really at all..

Cheers for the suggestion i'll try it out..

Ok - turns out the motor is still ok.. i've just been down mucking around with it for 30 minutes..

It appears that one of the feet that it slides on has probably lost a screw and because of that isn't a) moving straight.. and b) not working..

SOOOO.. the next question is.. how the hell do I get to the little feet thing.. i've goto take out the glass I think...

Any ideas people?

little feet thing? you mean the bit that the glass roof part bolts on to the rails?

there are two little plastic screws on the inside.. just unscrew them and then it's two bolts either side. then go from there... you'll see the light from there!

when i replaced my sunroof, I found so much gunk in the rails and I cleaned it all out with rags and a cotton bud to get in to the smaller spaces and re-lubed it using a combo of silicon spray and bearing grease.

I had also found htat part of the little feet thing was actually broken into the rail jamming things up.... well i actually broke it and then felt all tough for being able to fix it again :D lol

Sounds like it could be the same thing..

It has 3 x bolts holding the glass to the feet which are attached to the rails..

I could get to 5/6 nuts.. but couldn't get to the 6th one.. I also checked out the S15 service manual which has a similar design sunroof and gives step by step guide on how to adjust and remove..

Sooo tomorrow morning i'm going to mechanics to get oil change + see if I can fix the sunroof.. I think i've got a similar issue to yours - in that a screw or one of the feet had broken..

Did you end up fixing it yourself - or did you need parts?

Atelast if I can get it back to sitting level & not letting water in I can wait till parts arrive - otherwise it's no rainy driving for me..

Cheers Liz for the info - I think i'll clean it up as well @ the same time..

Ahh the price you pay for getting sunburnt..

My one needs to be assisted also. I hate it.

Last winter water used to come into my car. Through the sun roof, pulled the back seats out the trim out and removed the sunroof. This is very difficult 2 person job as the sunroof weighs a tone and its very hard to get out the door. Found out water is actually meant to come into the sunroof then drain out thru hoses in the a and c pillars. Mine was clogged and had to clean them, hence water leaking.

After I reinstalled it, I found out that I have done somthing wrong and cant control reverse wit the button anymore. But the Up down button controls both up down in and out. Wierd but it does. And yer I still need to assist. One day I'll open and do it all again.

Would like to know what your problem is if you over come it. Good luck!

yeah i fixed it myself links....

if you need sunroof parts speak with Powerplay Imports as I know they have a 33 sunroof there... it was out of a s2 and all in tact (except for the glass bit which i took lol)

lastemptation- it may be as simple as a small part stuck in the rails.. just takes a little patience to work it outl.

  • 2 months later...

liz helped me out, my sunn roof, gets stuck sometime so it's a bit hard to open, but i didn't want to pull all the rails out, greased mine up a bit, and seams better, but basically it doesn't always close streight, well use to.

I had to shimm up my glass with some home made shimms, out of LINO, cos it's soft and squishy, and used them under teh sunroof tabs to bring the roof up, but to get it allighned properly, you need to undo all the 6 bolts, when the roof is closed and then fiddel with it to get exact allignment.

I have studied this diagram and looked at the sunroof but I cant figure how to get to the bolts.

Do I need to remove the trim?

How?

Could you circle the bolts in the Diagram for me?

I sort of figured it was the shims but couldn't figure out how to get to them to pack them up.

    • Yes, I know🙄 but the sequential is not in my budget... don't want to reduce power neither, so looks like I'm stuck in the rabbit hole🤣
    • You’ll be very upset when you bust that too not to mention the gearing totally sucks. Don’t do it.

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
