Hi All,

Im very new to the GTR scene having converted from many years with STi WRX's. I felt it was time for a change so I have purchased a n R33 GTR Vspec in Sydney. Im currently in townsville. It had around 280kw atw so I took it to Hills Motorsport to get bigger cams/springs in. To my dismay, when the head was pulled off they found it only had cast pistons (standard). Since I was aiming for around 350 kw atw I thought this was a bit much for standard pistons so I have decided to go the whole 9 yards. With the gear i've bought Mark from Hills Motorsport estimates he will safely get 410-420 at thw wheels and anything up to abot 470. My question is this.........With good tyres ( not slicks) RE077's???, what 1/4 mile times do you guys think it will be capable of? I have run the quarter many times im my STi's and also done lotsa track time so im no starightline only amateur.

My guess = high 10's with drag street radials and a decent clutch.

Any faster will break the gearbox.

:) cheers :)

Hi all,

I agree the box will be broken but then i will go all out to get one that is super strong. I cant quote brands or names at this stage because i simply dont know enough at this stage.

Part of the build up includes a custom clutch set up built by some guy in QLD. He was recommended to me by Hills motorsport and they are taking car of it all for me.

I chose hills because the car was in sydney when I bought it and the import place I bought it from suggested I use them to do the minor work I had planned first (larger cams and stronger springs). Has any one here had work done by them? I have heard some good things about them and mark seems to know his shit, but then again im only new in the GTR game.

mid 10's and lunched gearbox.

If you haven't owned or raced a car like this before i predict mid 12's and a lunched gearbox. Not having a shot at you mate - good luck!!!!

Just get a lot of practice first on low boost or in another car.

Let us know how you go!

Like I said above I have done the quarter many times before in my WRX's and also in a coupla older V8 dinosaurs when I was fresh off my L plates. But having said that, there is a real "knack" to launching a wrx the right way and Im assuming that this will be the case with the GTR too. It will take me a while but what I was really asking about ( which has been answered too thanks all) is what time I can expect once im used to launching the GTR.

He has previously owned the worlds great gearbox muncher (WRX) so I took that into account.

hks twin 450 hp. biggest low mount hks units available for a gtr set-up.

The largest low mount HKS turbo's are GT-RS's...they are rated at 400ps.

i hope you have capacity larger than 2.6ltr's, some large cams and a 9500rpm rev limit...or its not gonna happen.

you can baby the box with that power and do low 11 to high tens (but not with those turbo's, 2530's would be better suited)....just watch the 2nd-3rd change.

p.s. not having a go or taking the piss here....just speaking from experience.

Hi again,

the turbos are hks gtr-s but i was told they were rated at 450hp, and other sites I have researched agree with that.

I think the inevitable will happen and i will have to re-do the box although i've been told the r33 box is a lot stronger than the r32. So that gives me a little hope.

Im used to having cars that are not real street friendly and thats the way i like em. If i want refinement and boredom I will go buy a hsv senator.

Anything you guys tell me on here I do take into consideration because as i said before im very new to the gtr scene. So any comments are not taken as smart arse remarks. purely as info.

With this car I just feel like doing something a bit crazy...a bit wild so thats why im chasing big numbers, big revs, and using high lift, long duration cams

are these bigger or smaller than the gtr-s turbos? and why would they be better suited?

smaller...they have instant torque off the line and will not bog the car off the line....9500rpm clutch dumps off the two-step are required to get the GT-RS's on boost off the line ( or a 75shot of NOS can help ) My old setup (2530's) was mixing it with the big boys to half track but lacked the topend to run into the 9's like them.

what you must understand is running fast times is not all about topend power....this is why some of the big Jap drag teams have actually downsized their turbochargers and gone quicker.

Thanks dirtgarage thats definatley food for thought. It already has a set of 350ho hks on it so i will have to do a swap and retune at some stage to see what the results are. If im gunna need 9500 rpm dumps to launch then that mean the gearbox will definatley be gone soon.

we did a straight swap and retune from 2530's to GT-RS's and made hardly any more power and tore a 1000rpm hole in or torque curve...don't upgrade to the GT-RS turbo's unless your willing to go larger capacity and big cams....or your times will go backwards....ours did.

we are currently building a 2.7ltr engine with big cams to compensate...bottom end will be able to rev to 9500rpm without a drama.

what oil pump you running??

    • Yes, I know🙄 but the sequential is not in my budget... don't want to reduce power neither, so looks like I'm stuck in the rabbit hole🤣
    • You’ll be very upset when you bust that too not to mention the gearing totally sucks. Don’t do it.

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
