Hi all

I have a problem with my Hicas on my R32 GTR, now when i drive the car under 80km/h the steering is fine including the direction of the steering wheel. But when i go over 80km/h then i have to turn the steering wheel to the right about 90 degrees for the car to drive straight! and then after a while of this the Hicas light turns on and the you can feel the wheels turn back to the orignal position, the worst thing is that this doesnt happen all the time and so its hard to show the professionals so that they can fix it!

Is the steering sensor stuffed?

any help is appreciated!!!

But when i go over 80km/h then i have to turn the steering wheel to the right about 90 degrees for the car to drive straight!

Step 1: DON"T DRIVE THE CAR.

Step 2: Trailer it to a mechanic, and tell him the issue.

Hicas provides about 2 degrees MAX. Think how far the front wheels are turning - do you really think you could even DRIVE a car is the rear wheels where turned on that angle.

also, if the rear wheels were turned as well, you would be 'crab walking' down the road - it'd look like drift.

the reason the hicas light goes on is because you have driven so far without turning the wheel back to straight. unless you are going around a roundabout about 100 times, not likley. This issue causes to to drive with the wheels 'turned'

Seriously, it sounds like your steering rack is stuffed. I'm not kidding about the don't drive it bit. it it happens at 80k, what happens when whatever is wrong FINISHES breaking... hello wall, hello oncoming traffic, hello hospital, and pray you havn't killed someone.

How much is your life wort? or someone elses?

Heck, even the cost of fixing it is cheper than when you crash the car.

reply with what the problem was when you get it fixted.

  • 2 weeks later...

i dont see how the steering rack is stuffed, cause how would going over a certain speed cause the steering angle to change, the only reason i can see the angle changing is via the hicas cause it switch on over a cartain speed, also the problem comes and goes so my guess is a sensor is stuffed, cause if it was mechanincal then it would occur all the time and the same speed.

firstly, i'd suggest installing a lock bar and get rid of hicas all together.

I'd also be checking the tie rod ends for wear / play, and your bushes on the rear, and check the toe. I know you mentioned it probably isn't mechanical, but you should check these things regularly anyway.

Have a look in the Tech /tutorials section on how to get the hicas into diagnostic mode.

If you still can't find the problem, just f**k off the hicas!

it's not HICAS. it's steering rack bushes. they are toast so your rack is sliding around. try this. shake the wheel lef/right quickly and then back to centre. i bet the car drive straight untill you need to turn some corners (then it's out of whack again). that's my guess.

edit: having read the post it may not be, but that's my bet. driving along with the steering wheel off centre for a long time is what's causing the hicas light to come on (steering angle sensor is showing too much steering angle)

thanks guys

yeah iam going to get rid of the hicas, but i was just wondering if it was something else!!

I do have a set of steering rack bushings waiting to go in!

the weird thing is that when i move the steering wheel the steering is exact so what i mean is that when i turn the steering wheel the car turns instantly! no delay and not sliding (on the rack)

I had the exact same problem on my GTR. I never really understood what the problem was but believe it had to do something with the rear wheels being stuck at the 2 degree angle (whaterver the HICAS does in the back) to compensate the car naturally turns the front wheel as well to go straight, here is a crappy illustration:

/ / front wheels

/ / back wheels

So in theory the car should be going straight down the hwy at an angle - I could never prove it, seems stupid actually.

Anyway things I tried to do to fix it:

wheel alignment, HICAS reset procedure, new tyres, all which worked to some effect but the problem always came back.

don't replace the steering angle sensor, this does not fix the problem.

I later replaced the rear and front bushes (whiteline) and never saw the problem again. The comment about the rear rack in my opinion is correct.

thanks again

and yeah ceedub thats what i though too, it feels like the car is crab walking done the road (well so to speak) but it all happens at speeds above 80 and only sometimes.

Now i have done the wheel aligment and new tires, now all thats left is the rest and bushes. but i will still lock the hicas!!

What bushes did you replace exactly, cause i have had the front castor bushings replaced!

The "phenomenon" only occurs above 80km/h as the Hicas kicks in above that speed only

The rear bushes are the culprit for sure. I can't remember what they were called (rear castor bushes???) , I'd have to look through my records and I won't be able to do that until I get back from overseas end Aug.

I remember though it was part of the Whiteline stage 1 upgrade or something like that.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
