About a 3 months ago I bought a whole heap of stuff for my baby and one of those things was aparently a NISMO short shifter. (Its got nismo down the side of the stick but the way things are copied these days I really wouldn't be surprised if its not). I won't mention where I bought it from cause i just don't think its right so I am posting this up so everybody can be aware of what they are buying. I only just got the car back on the road about a month ago and have only taken it out about 3 times. Anyways....

I started to hear a funny rattle coming from the bottom of the shifter on saterday night and ever since the shifter has been in when i take the car out I can smell gear oil after a while, so today I thought I better check it out.

I found the rattle. The nuts on the little bracket that holds the shifter to the box snapped off its welds and after close inspection show'd that the welds didn't even come close to biting..... not happy.

And the oil smell was from the shifter not even sealing properly and alowing the oil to splash out of the box.... not happy.

Nismo dont make many short shifters, they make solid shifters which dont make the throw much shorter. They have some actual SHORT shifters but they are rare.

Best off buying a C's Short Shifter, I trial fitted an el cheapo and it felt like crap, put the genuine C's on, solid short shifts! nice!

I know it isn't the point, but it could be easily fixed! just tack weld it back on. I bet there's a heap of guys on the forum close to you who could do it for free if you asked nicely.

Just trying to offer a solution to your predicament!

P.S. How did it feel when it was in and operational?

Could you hear the whine of the gears?

Sorry barron can't say. Trust me its not from ebay. I bought it from a place that alot of people in Sydney go to and are trusted.

Its all good matt, I got all the good toys in the garage. :D

Was thinking about welding it properly as you said and then making up a rubber gasket so it doesn't leak. does anybody know if I need to use chemically treated rubber so it doesn't fall apart from the oil?

It didn't feel too bad but I just don't trust the design.

I fixed it quite easily though..... SSS automotive sold me an original shifter for 30 bucks ;) Done and done.

they had a brand new one there (can't remember the brand) that looked really good for 250. It even came with the 4 bolt boot that bolts to the floor pan, and it was part of the shifter too.

    • Did you pay with a credit card? I'd be putting a charge back through then finding a new sparky to sort it out.
    • If you mean the alarm immobiliser; theyre internal to the alarm itself which makes that difficult; I couldnt even see where he put it; its not in the same place as last time; but with all black wiring it might be very challenging to trace  I had someone turn the key for me as I know it only primes for a couple of seconds As my post above; I am getting no voltage to the pump at all; but I am testing continuity of the power line (SB) from the pump plug to the relay fine. As well as the negative from the pump plug to a 12V constant.    Yeah; he blammed the no start on a bad battery; said I needed to get a new battery and it'll start. Turns out the battery drained because the tail lights had been on for half the day during the install (the rubber cushion on the brake switch gave out while he was testing it as I have a picture of the car from that morning with the tail lights off..i've replaced that). The battery was turning over the engine just fine for a long time; but got low since lights were draining it so it was too low to test a start after he finished. I bought a new one on his advice...$250 wasted. My original battery charged up just fine and is healthy.    It was running perfectly fine when I messed up the old alarm (programmed out the remotes). He couldnt start it after removing the old alarm; my assumption is that when he unhooked it; he didnt bridge the circuit back when trying to start it. Its always been perfectly fine. The ECU swap and pump were 2 years ago. It's never missed a beat in that time.
    • This is a big issue for me without the diff. I just have zero drive from the passenger side when drivers side has no traction. Bec's parents place has a crazy steep driveway with odd camber and I have never been able to get up. My bro-in-law's 130i with an (unknown brand) LSD gets up fine as does their dad's Hiace. My car stays at the bottom. We have other odd camber roads around here as we're elevated a bit and if it's raining I can get totally stuck around some hairpins.
    • Yeah, I am super excited for this.
    • Was the car running before he touched the car?
