Hks Or Jun Cam Gears? (scratch That I Ordered Tomei's)

Recommended Posts

id say JUN purely because it sounds better than HKS. :D

i imagine they are both the same duration/lift/etc?

I like the shcuzsched 'J' sound, its awesome....also they are a grey/black colour and would go with the resr of my Nismo gear. Found out that Nismo don't do cam gears :D

Yeah, they'd both be for the RB26 motor. Prices from Greenline.

check speedworks website they do JUN here in perth

Get the Tomei ones. Better than either of the other options.

Really?

I never really like the style of the Tomei ones, but I guess you dont seem them anyway ;)

So they are better than HKS and JUN?!

hks - ANODISED DURALUMIN CENTRE WITH NICKEL PLATED GEAR TEETH - duralium - synthetically made alloy - aluminium with 4.4% copper, 1.5% magnesium and 0.6% manganese. So its probably more flexible strong then strength strong.

tomei - are made from just duralium with no nickel. I am not to sure if this makes it stronger or not but the masses seem like them.

jun - I cannot find any info on these to be able to comment but my bet is duralium and nickel or steel.

sorry if im stealin thread, but what difference does just changing cam and cam gears do to a rb26 ?

I have a Nismo belt to do at the same time and a new radiator and hoses I will do as well. Just getting my car ready for things like internals (maybe) and turbos

JUN are stock Nissan gears modded and are ok but very heavy.

Very heavy? Surley if its a nissan gear with the centre machined out and an alloy centre it would be lighter than stock. (maybe not as light as hks etc)

But id rather pick a "non wearing item" for that kind of money.

We'll see in a few days anyway ;)

If you are thinking about new cams at any stage you can give the adustable pulleys a miss as the Poncams (To use but one example) have different centres to the stock items & you don't get such a gain from playing around with them.

Get a water pump too. You may as well do this at the same time as you will be up to your armpits in it all.

As for the whole steel/aluminium/duralium thing. It doesn't matter that much. What you have is essentially a rubber toothed belt that is running in the cam pulley. It doesn't wear the pulley worth a damn. The only way it can do so is if you are vain/stupid enough to leave the dust cover off it.

The advantage of an aluminium set of pulleys is that they are lighter & take some of the reciprocating mass off the engine & hence make the pulleys job that little bit easier.

The Tomei ones are good because they are from the appropriate grades of aluminium (ie duralium etc) & also have five locating bolts instead of three or four like many others. Lastly, the pretty blue colour matches my eyes & the red my handbag. ;)

Yes, I probably will get the Tomei Poncams in the future. So do the Poncams require specific cam gears that are different to stock items and the gears I am looking at now?

Water pump, I have been contemplating that but I have the radiator to do as well and I have no problem with temps as it is. I might just give that a miss.

    • @Supernanoyour car has ended up in my hands and I was wondering if there has been any work done to the motor?
    • Sigh... yeah OEM mount rear battery, very R33, very demure, very mindful.
    • Would need a substantial current draw in the car to make a bunch of sparks. Obvs to now test resistance to ground of the car's B+ lead. If there's a short there, you'll see it. Only likely place for that, as you suspect is alternator. But there is also the possibility that rats have had a chew on some insulation. Shitbox has the battery in the boot, yeah? Plenty of cable to attack.
    • Oh, I thought of that too... I disconnected the battery and hooked up the leads direct to the car without the battery in place. Sparks... I suspect the following: Alternator has decided to kill itself Starter has decided to kill itself I'll recharge the battery, then unplug both, and go from there. The above might take 6 months - however I did buy a Victron 15 AMP trickle charger, apparently it's better than CTEK?
